1993 Ferrari 348 TS

Now available for sale

Introduction

Andrew Taylor
Automotive Photographer and Writer

The 348 was the last V8 Ferrari to be developed under the fastidious direction of Enzo Ferrari himself - his single-minded, no-compromise approach is reflected in every detail of this lovely 348 TS.

The 348 superseded the successful 308 and 328 models and, like its predecessors, it was named to reflect its capacity and cylinder count – 3.4-litres and 8 cylinders. The 348 was available in TB configuration or “Trasversale Berlinetta” (coupe) and, as in this case, TS or “Trasversale Spider.”

The naturally aspirated Tipo F119 V8 produced a lusty 296bhp which, in a car weighing only around 1,400KG gives the 348 typically Ferrari-esque performance. The styling incorporated some eye-catching features that its forebears didn’t, namely the straked side air intakes and rectangular taillights resembling the Testarossa.

The 348 wasn’t just a pretty face, however, with significant technical enhancements being made. These include dual-computer engine management using twin Bosch Motronic ECUs, double-redundant anti-lock brakes, and self-diagnosing air conditioning and heating systems. Versions from 1993, and hence this car, have Japanese starter motors and Nippondenso power generators to improve reliability, as well as the battery located within the front left wing for better weight distribution.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Andrew after meeting Dave the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I bough this as a summer stop-gap car whilst my 1980’s 911 Targa was off the road for restoration - this Italian beauty has really got under my skin, however, so parting with her has been a very difficult decision.

Current owner Dave certainly knows his classic sports cars and he spent a good few months looking for the right Ferrari for summer use.

This car appealed because of its very moderate mileage, the great condition and the extensive maintenance history.

Exterior

The 348 TS presents very well in the metal - in its bright Rosso Red and complete originality makes it a very hard car to ignore.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17 inch five spoke alloys present in very good general condition with no dings or scrapes being noticed. There is a very small amount of lacquer bubble around the centre caps but it is only noticeable at very close quarters.

The Pirelli P7 tyres are 215/50 ZR’s and all appear to have plenty of tread remaining. Dave reports that they provide a winning combination of grip and comfort.

Bodywork

During our visit the bodywork highlighted no areas of concern. The underside pictures and video do show that the lower sill seams have lost some of their paint and could do with treating and re-finishing at some point.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition for yourselves.

Paint

The archetypal Rosso Red paint work is extremely lustrous and reflective and seemingly original. A testament to the car and attention this car has received throughout its life.

There are a few stone chips to the lower front bib of the car but we would consider these less prevalent than most low riding sports cars of this age.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in excellent unchipped condition.

No areas of distortion or discolouration were noted.

Interior

The combination of heavily bolstered leather sport seats in cream and strident red carpets is a winning one - the car seems to beg you to get in and drive.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather seats seem largely unmarked and unripped with the subtleness of the leather being well up to normal Ferrari high standard.

The deep-pile wool carpets are in equally good condition and are and finished in bright red and well protected by thick, Ferrari branded carpet mats.

Dashboard

There is something compelling and familiar about the clear orange numerals on the speedometer and tachometer.

The fact that the latter is red-lined at a heady 7,500rpm is a reminder, as if one is needed, that you have one of the era’s best V8s nestled behind your head.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original leather bound steering wheel is in great condition and the matt black alloy spokes are also unmarked.

The famous chrome gated gear lever is not only beautiful to look at but the polished alloy knob is also extremely tactile.

Mechanics

Nearly 300bhp from a naturally aspirated 3.4L engine in the early ‘90s was a testament to the engine design and build prowess found behind the gates of Maranello.

Engine and Gearbox

During our brief trip in the car all mechanical systems worked as expected and belied the age of the car. The engine revs eagerly round to that lofty red line but was also surprisingly refined and tractable at lower revs too.

The “snick, snick” of the gear lever negotiating that sublime chrome gate is one of the many joys of being in this 348 TS.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes proved to arrest the Ferrari in a straight and true fashion during our short trip. No pulling to either side was apparent.

During our on the road video, we were surprised by the relative refinement of the ride. It is clearly a firm and sports orientated set-up but by no means harsh or intrusive.

The Drive

A drive in open topped Ferrari always a special experience. This particular example sounds amazing, with the sound becoming better the nearer the car gets to its redline.

Electrics and Other

All electrics appeared to be working as expected and Dave attests to their efficiency and reliability.

History and Paperwork

The class of this Ferrari even extends to its paperwork package which includes the original, beautifully illustrated book pack encased in a Ferrari monogrammed leather wallet.

It appears that every owner of this car have spent whatever was required to keep it in prime condition, so there is a host of interesting and reassuring paperwork to accompany this car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summerised our own view on the car in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Dave

Have the belts been done since 2018? I.e. last shown as 18 but are due now. Have they been done in your ownership / have you obtained a cost for this? Graham

Hi Graham, The belts are due. Terry Keys at Silverstone who is a Ferrari specialist was going to do these. I have been quoted around £1500 all in. I would not use anyone else. I hope this helps. Dave

Hi ? Dave, as a summer stop gap, was that this summer or what year?
Are you happy with it mechanically?
Is there anything mechanically you feel needs doing straight away or very near future?
Thanks
Lee

Hi Lee,
I bought the car as my classic Porsche 911 was having an engine rebuild hence the reason I bought the Ferrari. I have been driving the car every weekend without any issues at all. It is a dream to drive. Before I bought it the previous owner had it MOT’d with no issues at all. If I didnt have my 911 I would be keeping the Ferrari, I just dont have a double garage ! I hope this helps. Thanks. Dave
