Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

An open top rarity with the traditional Ferrari character and refinement.

Created in 1989 and quite obviously leaning heavily on the iconic styling traits of the Testarossa and F40, the 348 was the car to bring the illustrious brand into the 1990s, with dual computer management, ABS and adjustable ride-height suspension. Initially sold as a fixed-head coupe or targa, the 348 was revised in 1993, to iron out some of the criticisms, increase the power and offer some visual upgrades over the original.

One of the most notable aspects was the inclusion of the Spider, the first open-top Ferrari since the Daytona of the early '70s. Featuring a slighter wider rear track, it used the same F119H higher compression engine as the 348 GT with a new gearbox. The results were intoxicating and has realigned the 348 as one of Ferrari's underrated greats. The 348 was the last junior Ferrari developed under Enzo Ferrari's personal supervision, it was a modern Ferrari without diluting the rich experience of what is now considered one the best mid-engined cars of its era.

First registered by Maranello sales in August 1994, this is 1 of just ~68 RHD Spiders imported into the UK and noted as one of the last 348s to be produced. Finished in, what else but Ferrari Rosso Corsa and a beige leather interior (it's thought only 7 still road registered in this spec), it has just ~27,659 recorded miles, only 2 former keepers, eleven service stamps, two keys, factory book pack and complete Schedoni toolkit and case, and with an MOT to February 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Piers the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

There is unique character and feeling when you drive the 348 Spider, it's one that I've never experienced in any other car.

Piers has led an extraordinary life, with adventures that could certainly fill a few chapters of an action novel, and to align with his taste for thrills, he bought the Ferrari 348 Spider ~20 years ago.

Used as an occasional car, Piers has ensured it has been looked after with regular servicing and maintenance - he's pointed out a few blemishes that need addressing but he was advised by the specialist to keep it original, as the issues were purely cosmetic.

A change in circumstances and a decreasing use in recent years means that Piers feels it is best to part with the car - he will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

Retaining much of its originality, this 348 Spider has been beautifully looked after.

Wheels and Tyres

The 17” alloys are in very good condition, with just minor rim damage noted on the nearside wheels, but appear to be easily treatable.

They are shod with Avon tyres up front and Pirellis on the rear, they are in good shape with decent tread and no sidewall damage visible.

Bodywork

The exterior of the car presents very well and the exterior panel fit is very good, with a decent flow and even shut lines. There's just some minor corrosion noted on the lower section of the nearside lower wheel arch lips and around the side repeater. There are also some minor blemishes noted on the base of both doors and kick plates.

The engine lid struts were too weak to hold the lid up, but otherwise, the doors opened and closed without resistance.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Rosso Corsa paintwork displays a deep lustre, with a decent shine. The colour match is consistent revealing no hazing or fade.

There are a handful of minor paint chips, such as the bottom off-side front corner of the bonnet, passenger side door handle button and a handful on the inside of the driver door and the inside edge of the nose. However, the car displays well and is free from any other scuffs or scratches.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is free of any noticeable road damage, with some mild lamination damage noted on the windscreen. The seals appear to be in good shape.

The lights and lenses are in very good order, with no stand-out issues noted from the plastic trim. The nearside door button paint has worn somewhat.

Interior

Cleanly presented with no outstanding flaws, the cabin is tastefully furnished and original.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are in good condition and retain a nice firmness. As to be expected, there are mild signs of age noted on the driver's side, mostly to the bolster.

The red carpets and mats are neatly mounted, and all still retain their deep red colouring with no suggestions of dampness. The luggage storage area up front is in good shape.

Dashboard

The cabin appears to have lasted well and presents very cleanly with no outstanding damage to the trim. The dashboard is free of any marks or scuffs, with some mild wear on the leather elements. The odometer displayed ~27,659 during our visit.

The glovebox strut functions but doesn't hold the weight, and there is some light age-related wear noted on the centre console, but otherwise, the switchgear and controls look good. The dials are fully legible and the digital console is operational, but the air conditioning is not currently functional.

The door cards and roof lining are in good condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheels and gear lever are in very good shape, a positive reflection to support the car's history.

Mechanics

Along with the elegantly designed engine, it sounds as good as it looks; the Ferrari V8 experience continues to thrill.

Engine and Gearbox

The cold start process was straightforward with no impressions of a weak battery, as the engine fired up immediately with no issues flagged up on the dashboard.

The engine idled smoothly, with no unwanted rattles or undulations. No knocking or surges were noted. The engine presentation is positive, with minor paint loss on some elements, but it bears the hallmarks of good maintenance and care.

The gearbox was demonstrated to work well, typically needing to warm up to get the best out of it and soon came alive during the drive. There were no reported issues with the clutch or gearchange, we didn’t hear any whine through the gears or from the differential.

Suspension and Brakes

The car appeared to handle well without any negative effects, cornering and turning without any unwanted noises.

It brakes with confidence, with no juddering or grinding from the wheels.

The Drive

There isn’t much that comes close to the thrill of driving an open-top Ferrari. The crisp and sharp characteristics of its manoeuvres and the thrill of the high-strung V8 engine noise combine to make an exhilarating experience for both driver and passenger.

We kept the car at lower speeds, opening up a little on the straights. The body felt remarkably rigid and no significant creaks heard from the suspension. The engine performed without any issues, sounding tighter as the components warmed up. Piers reported that the engine temperature remained consistent while in use, with no reports of oil pressure issues.

Electrics and Other

Piers told us that all electrical components were in working order, with the exception of the air conditioning, noted earlier.

The canvas roof is in excellent condition having been replaced in 2012, with no signs of outdoor elements. It raises and lowers without any problems. The retractable headlamp operation is seamless and operates without delay or strain.

The car has a Bluetooth digital radio head unit with hands free telephone function and USB ports installed, as well as a 6-disc Sony CD player mounted under the bonnet. It's also worth noting that this car came from factory with an upgraded Thatcham Category 1 Sigma Alarm & Immobiliser with Remote Central Locking, important for some insurers.

History and Paperwork

It comes with a healthy record of servicing and has recently seen a maintenance bill for almost £7,000.

The car comes with eleven Ferrari main dealer and independent specialists service stamps, with the most recent service (in February 2024) including a cambelt change and a general overhaul of the car. This included cosmetics, ignition, hoses and clutch parts totalling a shade over £6,800. Prior to this, the car received a new battery, clutch, Goodridge brake hoses, CV boots and a new mohair hood.

It comes with the much-coveted OEM Schedoni Leather Ferrari folio and all of the original Ferrari Owner Manuals (including its service book and owners' manual), complete Ferrari 348 tool kit and OEM Schedoni Leather 348 tool case, OEM satin Ferrari indoor car cover, these items alone costing ~£6,000. It also comes with several accessories including a Ferrari umbrella, Acer Ferrari branded laptop, a magazine road test and a 1/43 scale model car. It has both original ignition keys, 2 remote central locking fobs (for the Sigma Thatcham 1 alarm/immobiliser), and comes with an MOT to February 2025.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPI check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
