Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

The California was given a major mechanical overhaul with a new twin-turbocharged V8, the first turbo seen in a Ferrari since the F40, and more modern design that we've become used to from the marque.

Ferrari hit the reset button on the California and created the California T, a very capable and extremely fast "Grand Tourer". After four years of development, Ferrari introduced a new turbocharged engine for the first time in 22 years. The twin-turbocharged V8 offers the driver a whopping ~552BHP, a 70BHP increase from the previous model. This model is equipped with 12% stiffer springs and a 10% quicker steering rack, and the latest magnetorheological dampers to make the journey stiffer or softer when you need it the most.

This very well-equipped California T is coming to auction with just 2 former keepers, low mileage, and more recently owned for the past ~1 year. Take a look in the history and paperwork to see the ~£50,000 worth of factory options on this gorgeous "Giallo Modena" California. Some of important options the discerning buyer looks for include the extended carbon fibre interior trim including the iconic steering wheel with LED indicators, special handling equipment, exterior Scuderia shields and interior prancing horse embroidery on the headrests.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've always been a Ferrari man, and dreamed of owning one, and it had to be a Giallo Modena one.

Brian really searched high and low for his dream Ferrari. Last year he came across the California T which he thought would be perfect for summer adventures. He thoroughly enjoyed the car last year and has since wrapped it up for winter. Our trip out in the car was the first one time Brian has taken it out this year.

He'll be sad to see it go after an enjoyable summer, however, he has to make room in his garage for future ventures. Take a look at the history and paperwork section for a detailed view of the California T and factory fitted options worth ~£50,000. Being a July 2016 car, it still has a year of the Ferrari service plan left, so ready for the new owner to action at their local Ferrari main dealer.

Brian will be happy to answer any questions you have about the Ferrari in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Giallo Modena the California T offers a striking aesthetic, the redesign matched the sportier drivetrain.

Wheels and Tyres

One of the many attractive features of the car are the 20-inch matt "Grigio Corsa" painted forged wheels. They were an optional extra fitted from factory at the additional cost of ~£3,500. All the wheels present in excellent condition as you would expect for a meticulously cared for example.

The 20" wheels are wrapped in no other than Pirelli P-Zero's, dated 2017 all round. The tyres present in very good condition with lots of tread left for the new custodian.

Bodywork

The bodywork on the California T is made entirely from aluminium, which offers great torsional rigidity. A critical feature in a convertible of this calibre.

The car stands very straight and level, the shut lines appear straight and tight. The doors, bonnet and boot all open and close cleanly and precisely. The roof mechanism appears to work well and opens in an impressive ~14 seconds.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The Giallo Modena paint appears in excellent condition around the car, and really shows the amount of care Brian and the previous owners have taken when using and storing this vehicle. A layer of PPF (Paint Protective Film) has been applied to the car.

Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout. Just two small points to note, we noticed a very small stone chip in the bonnet and a tiny mark at the top of the nearside a-pillar.

The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great and in line with the low mileage, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

Luxuriously trimmed with its central rev counter and carbon F1-styled LED steering wheel, this is a luxury GT interior with sporting nature to boot.

Seats and Carpets

This prancing horse is covered in black leather inside, with special requested yellow diamond stitching throughout the cabin. The seats have held their shape very well and hold you tightly around the corners.

The rest of the cabin matches the rest of the car, an additional £2,400 was spent on leather upholstered for the convertible headlining. Yellow diamond-styled door panels, front and rear seats were selected, along with the prancing horses embroidered onto the headrests. One thing to note, we did notice the slightest mark to the drivers door card.

Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

The dashboard is a very traditional Ferrari, customised by the original owner with a white rev counter along with a touch-sensitive multi-media system with both touch screen and conventional controls, and the all important carbon fibre trim across the dash and transmission tunnel.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Continuing the black and yellow theme, the high spec performance steering wheel has yellow stitching on the leather elements, and carbon fibre body.

Fitted with the now iconic "manettino" dial and LED gear change indicator, and mounted carbon fibre F1 gear shift paddles behind look stunning.

Mechanics

For the first time since 1987 you found turbochargers under the bonnet of a Ferrari - the T producing ~553BHP from its twin-turbo V8.

Engine and Gearbox

The introduction of the 3.9L, ~553BHP twin turbocharged engine on the California T was a major development from the previous model. In our cold start video the engine bursts into life and quickly settles down to a steady idle. Mated through a twin clutch to the 7 speed automatic gearbox with fully automatic or paddle shift mode, 755NM of torque is delivered to the rear wheels.

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view under and around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the very clean mechanics.

Suspension and Brakes

The car was optioned with "Giallo Modena" Brembo Carbon Ceramic brakes which can be seen through the forged wheels.

The car was also spec'd with the £5,568 Handling Speciale pack (HSHS) which offers even stiffer springs, an improved exhaust, and the new gearbox software.

The Drive

Brian reports the car drives just like you would expect a GT Ferrari would and more, offering a combination of power, balance and certainty. The car lets you access an immense amount of power while giving you complete confidence on the road or track.

Turbo lag is pretty much a thing of the past through the use of the F1 flat-plane crankshaft, low inertia turbo, and optimised exhaust manifold design.

Electrics and Other

This California T benefits from a touch-sensitive digital multi-media system with both touch and conventional controls and Brian confirms all electrics work as they should.

History and Paperwork

With an additional ~£50,000 worth of options fitted from factory and finished in a stunning Giallo Modena paintwork, is the Ferrari you've always dreamed of owning?

A well spec'd example coming to market, the mileage at ~13,700 is definitely on the low side, and just two former keepers registered. This Ferrari came with the 7 year main dealer service plan, with 1 main dealer service still remaining for the new custodian of the car. The car has been fitted with thousands of pounds worth of additional options from the factory which really adds to both the performance and looks of the car. Take a look below to see all the options, and the previous main dealer service work carried out.

The private plate pictured with the car will not be included within the sale, and it will be shortly returned to its original age related plate.

From the paperwork you'll also notice a letter from After Sales Ferrari, confirming the first services were carried out in Ferrari North Europe and therefore the mileage is stated in km, (17,216km) rather than miles (10,698mi). They confirm that the car has not undergone an odometer and/or gearbox change.
