Introduction

Adam Purrier
Trade Classics

Simplistic, stylish and a charming Italian classic - the Fiat 500 is instantly recognisable and loved by all.

This little Fiat commands a cult status for reasons that become obvious as soon as you see one in the metal or take a ride in one. It's an icon of the automotive world and won hearts as soon as it rolled off the Italian firm's production lines back in the 50s. Today the car is still as popular as ever providing a great entry point to practical and affordable classic car ownership.

The Nuova 500 debuted in 1957 as a replacement for Fiat's much-loved 500 Topolino. The 500 was continuously developed over its two-decade lifespan, with this model featuring unitary construction, an opening roof and all-independent suspension while carrying its engine at the rear; a radical departure from its predecessors essentially pre-war design.

The 500 remains as popular today as it ever was and half the fun of this car is all about owning a cheeky and quirky classic. This example is in nice condition, is ULEZ exempt and a rare right hand drive model. All the fun of Fiat, and ready to drive away for the new owner to enjoy.

This listing was written from information supplied by Adam the owner, and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As soon as I saw the little 500, I knew I had to own it to as part of my collection.

The current owner Adam, has owned the car for just over a year after buying it from a local person that bought the car back in 1996 - she used it as her first car and kept it for nearly 25 years before Adam bought it.

Being exempt from ULEZ charges, Adam said, "The Fiat is such a great car for town and city driving, its nimble enough to tackle traffic with ease and definitely makes driving in the city less stressful!".

Due to the need of additional space at home and scaling down his car collection, the little Fiat comes to market.

Adam will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

An icon and legend worldwide - the Fiat 500 never fails to put a smile on our faces with it's classic form and styling.

Wheels and Tyres

The 12" wheels feature Fiat's iconic chrome hubcaps, whilst these look the part, we did notice some kerb marks on some of the wheels. There is a minor split in the front nearside wheel trim.

The wheels are fitted with a mix of Michelin XZX and Pirelli tyres, which also appear to be in good condition.

For a more detailed view of the 500's exterior and a closer inspection of the wheels and tires, please refer to the photos and videos.

Bodywork

The Fiat maintains well-aligned panel gaps - both doors, bonnet and the boot open and close smoothly.

During our visit, we didn't come across any significant dents on the car - of course, due to an older restoration there are a few bits when you look over the car, e.g. some bubbling over the rear wheel arch. However, overall the bodywork looks solid on the exterior and underside.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Blu Fiorentino, the paint showed respectably across the panels. We noticed some signs of micro blistering to the paint work and some notes of paint bubbling around the rear wheel arch. Apart from these observations, the car showed its age well.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please, take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

All the glass sections on the 500 appeared to be in good condition, including the windscreen, side windows and mirrors. We didn't observe any cracks or chips to these areas during our visit.

The chrome bumpers, mirrors and headlight surrounds look the part on this Fiat, helping to create a positive impression overall.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the exterior of the car is presented.

Interior

With a minimalist design, the 500 packs in tons of charm and charisma inside its smaller stature.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the 500 are finished in red vinyl with cream topped contrasting sections. The front seat section appeared to be in good condition, with just some minor marks on the front of driver and passenger seat. Rear seats showed well in the interior section.

The carpets in the Fiat look in great condition, in the rear of the car, there are added red trimmed footwell carpets. Inside the front boot a spare wheel is present, which is equipped with a Pirelli tyre showing a good amount of tread.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The attractive blue dashboard looks in great condition and we didn't note any concerning signs of wear.

The odometer displayed ~68,122 on the clock at the time of our visit.

The dial, switches, and controls are well maintained; all the surfaces appear clear, with no fogging or scratching. The dash display dial functioned well and everything worked as it should.

We did not observe any issues with warning lights when starting the car from cold or during our road assessment.

Our interior gallery section takes you through some closer images of the Fiat's dashboard.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

An original white two-spoke steering wheel looks great and in nice condition.

The gear stick had no major issues that we noted with only minor signs of usage.

Mechanics

The Fiat 500 is small and nimble with its raspy 0.5L engine, ideal for agile countryside or city driving, it's surprisingly nippy.

Engine and Gearbox

Rear engined and air-cooled, these motors have an iconic sound to match the looks - the car started up without concern and idled smoothly.

As the car is a little older than more modern cars, the gearbox has no synchromesh, where a double clutch action is required to shift through the gears. Mated to a 4 speed gearbox that powers the rear wheels, the set-up gives the car a very nimble feel darting through traffic. We noted no issues with the gears whilst out on the road.

Please watch the 'On the Road' video to see and hear the engine running starting from cold and running well on the way to our photo location.

Suspension and Brakes

We noted no issues or significant knocks, bangs, or squeaks from the suspension.

The brakes in the Fiat felt good, with no noticeable pulling or vibrations during the journey, allowing the car to come to a smooth stop, meeting our expectations.

We cover the underside of the Fiat in our 'Mechanical gallery' section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself. We take you around the mechanical elements of the car and give you an overview of what's on offer here.

The Drive

We took the car on some local roads to gain a better understanding of what this vehicle offers. During the drive, we went through the motions, working through the gears and clutch action of the Fiat and receiving an overview from Adam's perspective on the car's performance.

Light and small, but with a little bit of pace to keep up with the town traffic, the Fiat packs in so much charm into its shapely Italian curves.

Electrics and Other

The electrics in the 500 are relatively simple and represent the minimalist stylings of the car.

All switches and gauges look in good condition for its history, and are all reported to be working without concern by Adam. The vinyl roof was checked and operated with no issue.

Adam let us know that he's had no issues with the electrical elements on the car, and that everything should be working correctly to the best of his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

With under ~200 miles being covered over the past ~16 years, the Fiat 500 is remarkable for its age.

The Fiat has been owned for just over ~1 year, with the previous keeper having the car since 1996. In its previous ownership, it was a first car and mainly used for driving in and around Warwick town centre where the miles have been kept lower than most of this age.

For a look at the Fiat's history and maintenance, please refer to the history and paperwork media, which includes previous MOT reports and invoice for a new fuel pump, fuel pump gasket and fuel pump push rod fitted in September 2022.

Please note the videos state the car is a 1968, however, this is incorrect and the car was registered in September 1967.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Should any questions be required, Adam would be happy to answer these in the 'ask the owner' section.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
