Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

A genuine Italian icon, the Fiat 500 is a car for everyone and perfect as a city run around.

The Fiat 500 is considered to be one of the first purposed designed city cars, originally introduced in '57 until '75 over a single generation in a two-door saloon bodystyle. The Fiat 500 is an icon of the automotive world and instantly won hearts as soon as it rolled of the production line - today the car is still as popular as ever. A surprisingly practical car in spite of its size, the Fiat 500 saw large sales throughout Europe, and soon became the cult classic.

This example is fitted with an 594cc engine with Abarth extras, finished in a lovely shade of blue paint over red leather and carpeted interior. The car comes to market from ~6 years ownership, where the current owner first set eyes on the car on holiday in the Netherlands, and imported it over to the UK in 2016.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Lloyd the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I came across this lovely Fiat 500 on holiday and days later saw a for sale sign in the window, it was an opportunity I couldn't pass!

Lloyd is a huge classic car fan, when he was on holiday with his wife in 2016, they stumbled across this beautiful Fiat 500 on the streets of The Hague, Netherlands. Days later he saw a for sale sign in the car and before returning home quickly organised a test drive, made an offer and organised the registration documents to export the car to the UK. He drove the car all the way back without a fuss.

Lloyd had the car serviced in 2017 on his return and had the front wheel bearings adjusted, a new Abarth rocker cover kit fitted, a new flame trap, new rocker cover gaskets and new tyres in 2018. Since then he's used the car to do the school run in and on occasional local trips around Hampshire. He will be happy to answer any of your questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

The quirky and small shape only attracts smiles, saves and compliments from everyone it passes.

Wheels and Tyres

This 500 is fitted with silver 12" wheels, they present in used condition on each corner, with signs of surface corrosion.

The wheels are fitted with Nankang Econex NA-1 tyres all round and dated 2018, they appear to have a good amount of tread from the little use since being replaced. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this nostalgic Fiat 500 looks in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align as you would expect from a '70s Fiat. During our visit we spotted a few small areas of corrosion under the paintwork pictured and some minor dinks. Both the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close with ease, and door shuts / sills look clean.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a lovely shade of blue, it is a vibrant colour that really makes the Fiat 500 pop out on the roads. The paint appeared in fair condition on our visit, considering the age and use of the car, there is a fair amount of age-related marks across the bodywork. The car offered some deep reflections and good lustre to the paint, but did look a bit flat in places like on the engine lid.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks good and in line with the mileage and ownership, we didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit.

The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

View the image gallery to see the detail.

Interior

Less is more within the Fiat 500 cabin, you're greeted by just the one dial - functional and now often desirable.

Seats and Carpets

The car is fitted with red leather seats at the front and rear, and the interior is finished with matching red carpets. All the seats appeared in good condition with no signs of major wear, and the carpets the same too.

Dashboard

Opting to keep the blue colour scheme alive on the dashboard, it is the same shade as the rest of the car with black trim pieces and original switchgear.

The instruments are easy to find and read and Lloyd assures us they all work as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good condition, sitting nicely against the body coloured dashboard, and features no obvious damage.

The gearstick, handbrake, start lever and choke are all painted red with black matching handles, the paint has started to show signs of patina adding to the character to the car.

Mechanics

A few tasteful Abarth touches can be found within the engine bay on this Fiat 500.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine is the same 594cc two-cylinder air-cooled unit, and has been reconditioned throughout it's life. Lloyd replaced the original rocker cover with an Abarth version. Please watch the "On the Road" video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Lloyd operated the gears with ease.

Suspension and Brakes

Lloyd reports the suspension setup is comfortable, and the brakes function well, keep in mind though that these cars feature quite old tech and so the brakes do require some force to get the most out of them.

Please view the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car.

The Drive

Lloyd will be sad to see the car go, he mentioned the car is such a joy to drive in. He would often do the school run for the kids in it, and mentions it encourages smiles and waves from everyone he passed.

Electrics and Other

The car features a vinyl chequered sunroof which retracts and allows sun air and light to flood the cabin on dry days.

These are pretty simple cars, built to help the Italian economy and people get back on the road after the war, no complicated ECUs to worry about!

History and Paperwork

A nice usable classic coming to market from ~6 year ownership, these Fiat 500's are quite easy to maintain and make for the ideal city run around.

The car is coming out of a ~6 year ownership with Lloyd, he is the only recorded on the UK V5 since importation from the Netherlands in 2016. The car has bags of originality and with the 594cc engine has that little bit more oomph to it then the earlier cars.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
