Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The ideal, affordable mode of transport – perfect for city use.

The tiny, rear-engined city car was introduced in 1972 as the successor to the Fiat 500. The Fiat 126 was mainly built in Poland, where demand was high, and was nicknamed the “Maluch” (little one). The 126 quickly became an affordable and much-loved everyday car that remained virtually unchanged for nearly three decades.

Powered by a 652cc twin-cylinder engine producing around ~24 bhp and equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, the tiny Fiat is ideal for use as a city car thanks to its lightweight, compact design. Not to mention, it’s also relatively cheap to maintain compared to modern-day motoring.

This lovely example comes to market from just over ~5 year with our vendor after spending the first 20 years of its life in its homeland, Poland. A charming classic Fiat that doesn’t fail to turn heads wherever it goes.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Robert the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Purchased to take a nostalgia trip back several years.

Robert and his wife purchased this lovely 1999 Fiat 126 for his wife to use, as she had one as her first car shortly after passing her test when she lived in Poland.

As mentioned, this 126 originally started life in Poland and is said to have remained with the same keeper from new before being imported to the UK in 2019.

With the itch now scratched after five years of owning a classic Fiat, a decision to relocate abroad means it's not practical to keep the Fiat.

Robert will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

It didn’t shrink in the wash – it's the way Fiat intended, and we love it.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original steel wheels, these are finished in silver and look in good condition. They have the plastic centre caps, which are also in good order, and the tyres are a matching set of Hankook Optimos, which all have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the Fiat 126, the bodywork is in excellent condition. The panel gaps appear to be visually equal and matching. Even more important to note is that no corrosion blisters were spotted.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in blue, the paintwork on the 126 presents very well indeed. There have been a couple of minor chips touched in, but nothing excessive and definitely less than you would expect for its age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. Please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows appear to be in excellent condition, with no noticeable scratches. The window seals generally appear to be in good order. A small trim piece is missing from the passenger-side window trim, but it should be easy to replace. Robert told us the driver's side window is a bit tight in when going up about half way. The Winder sometimes slips and window needs a little help to get moving but gently pulling the window up at the same time as winding. It may require removing and repairing or replacing at some point. Passenger side works fine with no issues.

The headlights are in good order with no damage to the lenses, and the same can be said for the rear light lenses. The plastic bumpers are in good shape, but there are a couple of minor scuff marks on the front corners.

image

Interior

Simple, practical and functional, the Fiat 126 does what you need every day.

Seats and Carpets

The original fabric seats are in good condition, with no real signs of excessive or heavy use. Both door cards are trimmed in the same material to match the seats, and these are also in good order.

The carpets throughout are in excellent condition, and there is also a set of fitted Fiat 126 all-weather rubber mats.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard has a padded vinyl facia, which is in good condition.

The instrument cluster is working correctly, and the odometer shows ~82,645 kilometres, which is ~51,353 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original two-spoke steering wheel is in good condition, with no real signs of age or heavy use.

The four-speed gear stick has the numbers clearly visible and is in good order.

image

Mechanics

A marvel of minimalist engineering, managing to fit two cylinders into a space no larger than a carry-on suitcase.

Engine and Gearbox

The 652cc engine fires up without hesitation and comes to an even idle with a distinctive, unmistakable, recognisable tone. The 126 runs superbly, with no issues reported by Robert.

Over the past few years, whilst in Robert’s ownership, the engine has had the cylinder head skimmed and refitted with new gaskets and a new exhaust.

The four-speed gearbox has smooth shifts, with each gear easily selected.

The car has also had new driveshafts fitted within the past couple of years.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Another job carried out whilst in Robert’s ownership is a full refresh of the braking system, which is working perfectly, bringing the car to a stop in a straight line.

At the same time, there was also work done to the suspension and steering, so it handles as it should and goes exactly where you point it. Robert told us the MOT picked up slight play in steering box, this can be adjusted (doesn't have rack and pinion like newer cars...similar to old land rovers steering box). Offside front wheel bearing has slight play, bearing play can be adjusted by tightening of the main bearing nut.

image

The Drive

Driving the “little one”, you feel connected to the car, navigating through the city streets with ease, with the agility that a modern car simply can’t replicate. While you won’t be breaking any land speed records, the 126 is perfectly capable of keeping up with modern-day traffic around the city, but it’s all about the charming feel, connectivity to the road, and huge amount of fun the Fiat 126 delivers.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the Fiat is pretty minimal, but what is there is working as expected.

The head unit has been replaced with a Sony CD, MP3 unit that also has Bluetooth connectivity. Added to the upgraded head unit is an under-seat subwoofer, which brings a pleasant listening experience to your favourite tunes.

We didn't test everything but Robert assured us that everything works.

History and Paperwork

As you will see, Robert has given the 126 a no-expense-spared ownership.

There is a nice collection of invoices from Robert’s ownership that show the car has been well maintained with regular servicing and has had what it needed to keep the classic Fiat in good order for regular use.

This is a fantastic opportunity for any classic car fan to experience one of Fiat’s best small cars, something different from the slightly older 500 model. A true classic that is becoming much harder to find in such good condition, making this one a great find not to miss out on. It comes with a current MOT valid until 07.01.2027.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, and does not have any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
