Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

Emerging from Halewood in Merseyside, the GT version is one of just ~2,002 produced.

When new, the Consul Capri provided British buyers with genuine glamour and glitz; an American-inspired car with a package suited for those who wished to turn heads, on a manageable scale and with the dependability of well-proven mechanics. Released in 1962, the Consul Capri was placed in the Ford line-up as a stylish and compact car, with genuine exclusivity. Sadly, the fast-paced changing fads of 1960s car styling were unkind to the Consul Classic, as the car, with its flamboyant fins, heavy chrome trim and curved screens, looked passé by the end of the decade, but the Consul Capri's snapshot of the jet era looks positively stunning today.

One criticism was the mediocre power. The Consul Capri was really built for modest cruising and being admired, and some felt the original engines were not quick enough. However, this 1963 example has been rebored to 1558cc, is fully balanced, fitted with a fully gas-flowed cylinder head and a fast Road Kent camshaft, quashing the original rumours that it was not fast enough.

Owned for the past 44 years, this fully restored 1963 Consul Capri GT has been a labour of love for Brian, who has thoroughly enjoyed carrying out the restoration and taking it to many shows to display his extremely well-executed restoration.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Brian the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Aged 17 in 1963 when this Consul Capri GT rolled off the production line, owning one seemed so far away.

When this GT came off the production line in 1963, apprentice panel beater Brian could only dream about owning the beautiful Consul Capri. It was some years later, in 1982, when this dream became reality, but it wasn’t quite plain sailing, as he could only afford a restoration project. But as a qualified panel beater, what better way to put your skills to the test. The result of all Brian’s hard work is stunning. It looks superb inside and out, perfect for any enthusiast to take over its ownership.

The sale is being handled by Brian's daughter Vicky who will be happy to answer any questions in the comment section below.

Exterior

60s charm, American styling, but fully built in Great Britain.

Wheels and Tyres

Brian has fitted a set of classic steel wheels finished in silver with chrome hub caps, which are all in excellent condition.

A matching set of Pirelli P3000 tyres are fitted, all of which have plenty of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The Consul Capri's bodywork has been through a lot since Brian purchased the car in 1982. A complete restoration was carried out by himself, with many new panels fitted and corrosion cut out. Completed several years ago, the bodywork has stood the test of time and looks fantastic, with even and consistent panel gaps.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Monaco Red', the paintwork presents very well. With no chips or scratches spotted - it’s ready to hit any show field with pride.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows appear to be in good condition, with just some light age-related marks, not too bad for 63 years old.

The chrome work has a bright finish with only minor tarnishing, and both the front and rear lights are free from damage.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Classic 60s charm with a few essential tweaks.

Seats and Carpets

The original front and rear seats have been recovered in vinyl, and these are all in excellent condition.

The carpets have been replaced throughout the cabin, and these are also like new.

Inside the boot, there is rubber matting to protect the floor, and the spare wheel is in place.

image

Dashboard

The black vinyl dashboard is in great condition, with no damage spotted. The instruments are the originals and show ~45,787 miles. Lower down, Brian has fitted additional tachometer, oil pressure and ammeter gauges, which are in keeping with the style and age of the Consul Capri.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original two-spoke steering wheel, this is in good order with minimal signs of age.

The gear knob is wooden, with a GT logo sitting proudly on the top.

image

Mechanics

The engine has seen some nice performance upgrades during the rebuild.

Engine and Gearbox

Giving the Consul Capri some welcome performance upgrades began with the engine being bored out to 1558 cc, which was also fully balanced. The cylinder head was fully gas-flowed and treated to a Kent Fast Road camshaft and a rejetted carburettor to give the correct fuelling.

The engine fires up quickly and comes to a smooth idle. On the road, it performs well, with no issues reported.

Fitted with a four-speed gearbox, this has been changed from the original to one from a Corsair 200E, which has a closer shift pattern. The rear axle ratio has also been changed from 4.1:1 to 3.9:1.

image

Suspension and Brakes

During the restoration, the suspension components were sandblasted and repainted in gloss black. All new bushes have been fitted along with new springs. The ride is comfortable, and no knocks or bangs were heard during our drive.

The brakes are working as you would expect, although the rear does seem to be binding slightly, so they would require closer inspection.

image

The Drive

Out on the road, the 1963 Consul Capri GT, with its bored-out 1558cc engine featuring a gas-flowed cylinder head and a fast road camshaft, is transformed from a stylish 1960s cruiser into a lively classic with real character. The modified engine pulls harder through the rev range, breathes more freely, and rewards enthusiastic driving with a crisp exhaust note and stronger acceleration.

But it’s the overall styling package that makes the GT stand out, and that it does, turning heads everywhere it goes.

image

Electrics and Other

All the switchgear appears to be original and looks to be in good condition, working as it should, with no problems reported by the owner.

History and Paperwork

It’s always nice to have your hard work displayed in the pages of classic car magazines.

Other than a few old MOT certificates, there isn’t any paperwork for the car. Over the years it has been lost, or Brian just didn’t think about saving it. His hard work was recognised with features in two classic car magazines explaining his restoration journey.

Please note the number plate 655 BKG will be removed before the auction ends; it should be going back to its original number of AVH 461A.

A beautiful, fully restored 1963 Ford Consul Capri GT which is ready to hit any show field and stand out from the rest.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
