Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Photographer and Editor

The Mustangs sporty design, affordable performance and adaptability make it a classic icon of American car history.

When it comes to legends, very few cars can top the impact the Ford Mustang has had on US motoring history. A measure of its success can be attributed to its status as one of the fastest-selling cars of all time. Utilising running gear from popular Ford Falcon and Fairlane models, the purposeful-looking Mustang was released in 1964 and was one of the compact 'Pony cars' of its era. Sold with a vast array of options, allowing customers to custom-build a unique model to their specific requirements. The car soon found success on the rally stages and race tracks, cementing its status as a Ford icon.

Incremental year changes kept the car fresh, and also helped to identify the model year of each Mustang by the trim differences and body mouldings. 1966 Brought in a new grille, side trim and gas cap, and the "Cruise-O-Matic" three-speed automatic transmission became available. Also fitted for the first time was an AM/FM mono radio, one of the first cars to feature one. Considered one of the best of the original Mustangs, the 1966 model was the last year before the significant redesign and size increase.

Fitted with the 289 cu small-block V8 engine, this restored (undocumented) 1966 coupe is finished in metallic blue with a blue vinyl interior. This matching numbers car was imported into the UK via the west coast of America, it has been with our vendor since 2019. Aside from an uprated carburettor, the car is original as it was when it left the factory in 1966 and comes with almost ~£2,500 worth of invoices. In need of some cosmetic bodywork attention, it was last serviced around ~200 miles ago and comes with two keys and is MOT and road tax exempt.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It amazes me that a car that is nearly 60 years old is so comfortable even on British roads.

Roger has always been a fan of classic cars and has had several British cars over the years. Having always admired the Mustang, he jumped at the opportunity of owning this fully restored ex-California car.

Roger speaks passionately about the Mustang, and highlights the colour and the matching numbers (plates on the door match the numbers stamped on the inner wing) and attached a screenshot of the warranty number definition. He was also keen to point out that the underside of the car is untouched in terms of welding.

In recent years, it has seen less and less use, but he told us that he would keep it at least until his daughter’s prom, which was in June.

Roger will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Smartly presented and largely original - plus the colour looks simply stunning in the summer sun.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15x7 Styled steel wheels have light marks on the faces, but are free of rim scuffs and present positively.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Cooper Cobra tyres and show a spec of 235/60 - these are date-coded from 2017. They are in good shape and have even tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Mustang and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The overall exterior presentation looks smart and free of significant dents, with a decent panel fit and acceptable shut lines - all doors open and close without obstruction.

A closer investigation reveals a bit of under paint bubbles forming on the base of both passenger doors, c-pillars, base of the rear wings and wheel arches. On the roof around the top of the rear window and rain gutters show micro blistering.

The structure of the cars looks solid, with just a light sheen of age noted on the chassis rails and wheel wells - the floor pan, boot floor and engine bay all look to be in great shape.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The blue paint has decent coverage, with a good lustre - the top of the nearside wing has mild orange peeling, but the finish is generally free of swirls.

A light surface mark was noted on the nearside rear wing, and a small chip is present on the nearside door well, but the car is generally free of road / parking wear. We also noted some paint blistering on the inside of the top of the offside A-pillar.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition with decent seals.

The lights and lenses are good too.

The chrome is correct for the model year; some of the side glass and sill trim have pitted a little, with the door handles showing their age too, but overall, it is free of corrosion.

The bumpers are in good shape and are flush and even to the body.

image

Interior

Very original and well-kept - its sculpted dashboard and retro styling are elegantly presented.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are all in excellent condition, with no signs of age or wear.

The carpets are cleanly presented, with minor marks.

The car is fitted with colour-coded blue rubber mats.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard fabric and facia look smart with no significant marks or rips. The metalwork displays well, with no issues with the chrome fitting aside from a loosely fitting heater control plate.

The Mustang comes with a centre console which is unusual, it displays positively along with the switches and controls with only minor signs of age in places.

The dial faces have a mild sheen of age but are fully legible.

The door cards, interior trim and headlining are in good shape.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in line with the age of the car and generally free of significant damage.

The gear lever is decent with just some mild corrosion on the arm.

image

Mechanics

The positive maintenance of the thundering V8 engine has rewarded Roger with a good reliability record.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fires up into life without any hesitancy, vibrations or unwanted noises. Idling smoothly, the oil pressure needle placed in the middle of the gauge reading. There were no dashboard warning lights and the car was leak-free during our visit, with no signs of fluid on Roger's driveway.

The engine is cleanly presented with decent hoses and ancillaries, all suggesting good upkeep - just some of the metal components show a sheen of age. The carburettor, intake manifold and air filter are Edelbrock items.

Roger informed us that the Cruise-o-Matic automatic transmission operates with no reported problems, engaging drives smoothly and offering an instant kick down.

image

Suspension and Brakes

While some components show a coat of age, the suspension holds the road without any negative feel. We didn’t hear any knocks or bangs during the test drive.

The brakes offer a positive feel, with no wobbles or squeals - they have a good feel, and Roger demonstrated that they stop the car without drama.

image

The Drive

The Mustang has a raw yet controlled feel, and the V8 engine promises thrills and torque. The experience of driving, however, is equally matched by the goodwill other road users will offer, being one of the most loved and recognisable of US classic cars.

The Mustang 289cu V8 engine ran smoothly during the drive, pulling without undulations or splutters. The almost-musical exhaust burble is one of the many charms of the Mustang, yet it's both dynamic yet comfortable on the move, with light, precise steering and decent grip. We didn’t hear any unwanted noises from the wheels. Upon cornering or braking, the steering remained compliant during the low-speed drive.

The car has been reliable over the six and a half years of ownership, the oil pressure hasn't caused any issues, and the engine temperature always stays low.

image

Electrics and Other

The car comes with a windscreen scuttle panel protector, which prevents leaves and debris from blocking the rain channels.

The front seat belts have been renewed, and the rears have been added for peace of mind.

The car is fitted with LED lighting, including rear amber turn signals which is said to be compliant with an MOT test.

History and Paperwork

Imported into the UK in 2018 by a Mustang specialist, it has received ~£2,500 worth of maintenance since then.

Imported into the UK in 2018 by Midland Mustangs, this restored (undocumented) West Coast-sourced car with matching numbers and intact door-mounted identification tag has almost ~£2,500 worth of work before it was bought by Roger in 2019. This includes work on the electrics and brakes. Roger keeps the Mustang garaged between October and April, and is covered in the summer months, never being driven in the wet in his ownership.

The car was also serviced by a specialist in June 2022, which included a carburettor tune-up, ignition timing and seat belt fitting. It passed its last MOT in 2022 with no advisories. It comes with two sets of keys, a current V5 and is road tax and MOT exempt. Roger also has a picture of the car with its original US plates.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
