Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Accept no imitations, this is the original and best Pony car!

The arrival of the Mustang in 1964, was a groundbreaking piece of success for Ford but it goes far deeper than clever marketing. Conceived as an affordable, stylish and compact full four-seater car with so many potential add-on options, it gave the buyer the ability to essentially build the vehicle to their own specifications. The Mustang, which was mechanically built on the Ford Falcon's well-proven and reliable underpinnings, served as the basis for a new breed of ‘Pony cas'. The success and desirability of the Mustang were hastily copied by manufacturers the world over, and truly encapsulated the hopeful and bright possibilities of the 1960s.

This 1968 Deluxe coupe was specified with the rare (just one of 5,063) "Madagascar Orange" paint finish, as part of the 1968 "Rainbows of colors" promotion. Retaining much of its original spec, the car has seen a handful of modifications that not only enhances the already appealing styling but offers genuine concession to the car's handling and usability. Imported into the UK in 2014, it retains its factory tags and is backed up with confirmation of its build specifications. It is powered by the 302 CU V8 engine with the optional 2V carburettor which added an extra ~30BHP. Fitted with power steering and power disc breaks, the car is finished by a set of Torque Thrust D wheels. Prior to the current owner taking on the car in 2020, it was driven across Europe on a charity run, covering ~2,000 miles without a hiccup.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The car is the ultimate conversation starter!

Tony's Mustang specialist mechanic, calls him "Lucky Tony", on the grounds that he was fortunate to have found such a solid and original example. Using patience to find the right car, with advice from "Mustang Maniac" he took on the car ~3 years ago and has used it on a regular basis, ensuring that it runs perfectly. This Mustang has been kept it in secure storage throughout that time.

Having enjoyed this example over that time, he's now selling the car as he plans to find a Fastback version as his next foray with a Mustang. Tony will be happy to answer any questions on the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A visual treat from every angle, the impact of the Mustang cannot be underestimated.

Wheels and Tyres

The handsome Torque Thrust D wheels are in excellent condition, with very few signs of road wear. They give this Mustang that extra visual appeal.

All of the tyres, with the exception of the nearside rear, are less than 5 years old, and all have decent tread. View the image gallery to see the detail.

Bodywork

A solid proposition throughout, the car has been checked over by Mustang specialist "Mustang Maniac" and their conclusion is very positive. The floor pan, suspension mounts and bulkheads appear solid with no issues noted on the bodywork, other than a small area of superficial corrosion coming through on the lower rear arches as pictured. The panel fit and gaps are tight throughout, with no issues in regard to opening and closing the doors. No dents were noted on the day.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The striking special edition "Madagascar Orange" paint is free of any damage, with very little in terms of chips, flaws or fade. The application is smooth and even throughout with a healthy lustre and no swirls or age noted.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The deluxe package tinted glass is in excellent shape, the factory-applied tint appears to be intact throughout. The chrome work is in very good condition, with some of the minor trim showing the odd sign of age, but not enough to distract.

All of the body trim and fittings are believed to be correct for the model year, and the lights, reflectors and lenses are all in great shape. The vinyl roof is very tidy with no signs of age or wear.

Interior

A few additional bolt-on parts seamlessly enhance the near-perfect cabin.

Seats and Carpets

There are no significant signs of damage observed on the standard black vinyl bucket seats, with the car being fitted with the Deluxe-specified laps belts and top-mounted belts as well.

The carpets and mats are in very good shape, the mats displaying neat Mustang monograph graphics.

Dashboard

The facia and top padding are in very good order, with no immediate signs of damage or age. The car has the optional rev counter fitted, along with a digital radio. Everything functions as expected, with no issues in relation to the switchgear other than a light patina of age noted in some places.

The door cards and headlining are in excellent shape. The car is also fitted with a centre console, as part of the Deluxe package.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is an after-market fitted item, which suits the cabin perfectly, it is free from any significant wear.

The automatic gear lever has a lock fitted to the shifter, adding an extra element of security. The metal lever and gate is inline with the age of the car but free of distracting marks.

Mechanics

The thunderous call of the V8 awaits you, this is what everyone things about when they read Mustang.

Engine and Gearbox

There were no issues to report in regards to the engine, having started and idled perfectly without any issues. Any cold weather exhaust condensation soon cleared up and no leaks were observed on the day.

The car has been fitted with a new 'Cruise-a-matic' auto gearbox by a Mustang specialist and selects drives with no reported issues.

Suspension and Brakes

The ride, thanks to the carefully considered lowered suspension and new shock absorbers, removes any typical wallowing and the car feels reassuringly planted on the road.

No unwanted noises were heard coming from the wheels. Its power-disc brakes stop the car evenly with no juddering or squeals.

The Drive

The V8 power was intoxicating, and its smooth delivery and aural accompaniment were literally a treat to the ears. The V8 runs evenly with no unexpected noises heard during the 10-minute test drive.

The steering was wobbly-free during both acceleration and braking, with the cornering feeling stable. An upgraded Borgeson power steering kit has been installed. No thuds or grinding was heard from the running gear.

Electrics and Other

The car has seen some useful upgrades in the hands of Tony, with the electrical relays being one of his first tasks to overhaul. Asides from the steering box and suspension mods, the car has also been fitted with a digital radio.

History and Paperwork

A beautifully presented Mustang Coupe, solid bodywork, built to factory spec and part of the "Rainbow of colors" Ford promotion.

Unusually for a personal American import, the car comes with some fascinating documents which help put together the originality of the car. This includes a build report, including its issuing dealer, build date and stats that determine the number of cars built to this specification. A copy of its original US certificate of ownership prior to when the car was shipped into the UK in 2014 is also provided. Since being in the UK, over £6,000 has been spent, with an invoice from 2020 for work on the brakes and suspension amounting to £2,300 alone. In addition, the car also comes with its V5c and several previous MOTs.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.
