Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

One of the original ‘Fast Fords’ the Capri is a much loved British classic and the 2.0 S model brings to the table a good balance of power, reliability, and comfort.

The Ford Capri was originally launched in 1969 and was immediately well received with its rambunctious styling, comfortable interior, and fun driving experience. In 1978 the third iteration of the Capri was released and brought with it a facelifted and more aggressive design, along with improved aerodynamics leading to increased fuel economy over previous iterations. The Capri’s final production year was just eight years later in 1986.

This particular example is a 1982 Ford Capri 2.0 S, powered by the standard high compression 2.0L engine capable of producing ~99bhp, it also benefits from the facelift design and improved aerodynamics of the third generation Capri, and comes to us from 7 years of ownership with current owner; Peter.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Peter the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I was drawn to the Capri by its aggressive styling and engaging driving experience - I’ve owned the car since 2015 and have loved every second of my ownership.

Peter originally purchased the car in 2015 and since then he has made every effort to look after the car, with all MOTs and required work carried out when needed.

Most recently the car has had a new clutch, new battery, interior mats, new rear indicator light and housing, and a Capri club parcel shelf.

Peter is on hand to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

Finished in Venetian Red the distinctive styling of the Ford Capri stands out from the crowd, with its ‘S’ lower decals and four spoke wheels, it’s hard not to like the design of the Capri.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels appear to be in good condition, having been refurbished in recent years they show no signs of curbing or damage that we could see on the day.

It's important to note that the tyres are wearing low and the front ones have been advised on the most recent MOT for having begun to perish.

Bodywork

Overall the bodywork is presentable and we are told by Peter that it's had some work done a few years ago to the rear wheel arches, both were replaced.

Looking around the car you'll see spots of corrosion, particularly inside door jams and some on the sills, rear panel and OSF wing with some evidence of prior repair.

The recent MOT, that of course you can look up online, advises that the front inner wheel arches and front lower inner wings are showing signs of corrosion, however the panels themselves all appear to be straight with no obvious knocks or dings.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Venetian Red paintwork looks generally okay, however, you'll notice that not all panels are matching shades of red due to previous paintwork actioned. Whist the paint does look vibrant in the photos, we do think it would come up a few levels with a good mop and polish.

We have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the paint for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car is free from damage, with no obvious signs of chipping or cracking, and the surrounding trims are all in good condition too.

The rear window is heated but we understand this is not wired in.

Interior

The interior of the Capri is stylish and befitting of its age, with Carla trimmed Recaro seats and fishnet headrests - everything about the interior screams '80s styling.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro front seats are a nice addition in the 'S' model - there's no major damage, however the fabric is looking a little faded and beginning to show its age in places, particularly on the driver's seat.

The rear seats have fared slightly better overall, with less faded fabrics.

Please study the interior video and pictures to make your own condition assessments.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition overall, with no real blemishes or damage to speak of, and all clocks/gauges work as expected too.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel whilst slightly worn for its age does not appear to be suffering from any damage.

Likewise the gearstick whilst being original does not exhibit any signs of damage or extreme wear and tear, just general age related wear as would be expected.

Mechanics

Powered by the standard high compression 2.0L engine, the Capri produces ~99bhp along with solid handling and an engaging drive.

Engine and Gearbox

When watching our ‘On The Road’ video, you can see the engine start for the first time in over 24hrs, and whilst it takes three turns to start, once started the engine sounds good, idles well and doesn’t appear to struggle at all.

The car benefits from having had a new clutch fitted in recent years, meaning no clutch slip when moving through the gears, and when speaking with Peter he tells us there are no issues with the gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

We were unable to go out for a short run in the car due to it being on a SORN so we can't properly comment on the suspension / brakes from a passenger's perspective.

However looking at the most recent MOT it would appear as though the car could do with the suspension and brakes overhaul, due to several advisories noted.

We've taken photos and videos of the underside for you to assess the condition of the components.

The Drive

The Capri was loved not only for its rambunctious styling, but also its fun and engaging drive. This changes little with the third generation Capri, providing a frill free and involved driving experience for both driver and passenger alike.

As mentioned, we were unable to take the car out on a drive due to it being on a SORN, however, Peter assures us that the car drives well.

Electrics and Other

The electrics on the car seem to work without issue, we noted that all lights are present, correct, and working, along with all gauges on the dashboard working as they should.

We did notice that the heated rear windscreen is not actually connected, however it is present should somebody want to amend this in their ownership.

History and Paperwork

This 1982 Ford Capri comes with plenty of receipts and invoices, even the original bill of sale and owners handbook.

From the original bill of sale, to the original owners handbook, a handwritten history from a previous owner, and a stack of receipts and invoices for parts over the years, this Capri is not short on paperwork.

Sadly service stamps are somewhat lacking however the invoices for parts are all present and correct, and whilst the car is in need of some work to rectify recent MOT advisories and to generally return the car back to perfect condition, it will make a great project car for someone looking to journey into classic car restoration, or even someone wanting to tidy it up and enjoy it for what it is; a true British classic.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
