The Ford XR2 was build to be driven - this boxy hot-hatch from the golden era has been given a new lease of life.

The XR2 is a hot hatch variant of the first-generation Ford Fiesta, only offered in Europe. The XR2 was originally powered by an OHV derivate of the Escort RS1800's engine offering a modest 84bhp. With new top speeds and nimble handling, this hot hatch became a cult car beloved by the 'boy racers' of the '80s. This example had a punchy upgrade in the form of a Mondeo Zetec 2.0L engine swap, producing figures upwards of 154BHP.

Chris has enjoyed ownership and uprating the car over the previous 11 years, having the majority of the work carried out through 2014. He has only covered ~3,000 miles in the car since. We really love the fun factor of this car paired with its serious driving and handling abilities.

Meet the owner

After coming across this highly original XR2 up the road from me, I knew it would make the perfect base for my next performance build.

Chris has carried out a complete performance restoration on this Fiesta XR2 during his 11 years of ownership spending over ~£23,000.

He has had a full restoration of the bodywork carried out and replaced the original Ford 1.6L with a Mondeo 2.0L Zetec block. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

That classic Fiesta look, the exterior presents in great condition as a result of the restoration carried out by the current owner.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 13" Ford RS 4-spoke alloys, the wheels really look the part on this modified hot-hatch. The wheels are wrapped in Yokohama A539 2012/2014 and appear to have a lot of tread left still. The same can be found on the full-size spare in the boot.

Bodywork

Bold and boxy XR2 body lines, the car appears in great condition having been restored and maintained. All panel gaps look correct.

Paint

Finished in a vibrant "Sunburst Red" topped with bold XR2 side graphics, so very 80's. The paint has deep lustre and is even in colour across each panel.

The only areas of note observed were; a very small chip on the edge between the driver's door and front wing and some very slight bubbling around the sunroof.

Glass and Trim

The trim and glass present in a condition that is in line with the appearance of the rest of the car - no major signs of damage, cracks, chips or discoloration.

The rear light covers are showing some slight signs of age. Please watch the detailed video to see the whole exterior in great detail.

Stripped-out, pure performance-focused RS-themed interior - perfect for track days.

Seats and Carpets

Chris has fitted bucket racing seats for performance and weight-saving purposes. Under the passenger's seat you can find a PC680 Odyssey Extreme lithium battery that powers the car.

The seats look to be in great condition throughout. No carpets to be found in this car, they just slow you down! Please review the images to examine the interior in more detail.

Dashboard

The dashboard is finished in grey with red pipping surrounds adding to the sporty look. The dashboard presents in line with the age of the car and Chris reports that all the gauges and dials are working as they should.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A race-inspired RS steering wheel with chromed manual gear shifter - both appear in great condition.

Mechanics

An upgrade to a 2.0L Mondeo Zetec gives this hot hatch ~156BHP to play with.

Engine and Gearbox

Chris has carried out a very tidy installation of a Mondeo Zetec engine, the engine bay presents in excellent condition, and the car is fitted with a custom radiator.

The car's paperwork comes with a dyno printout stating ~156BHP when the car was fitted with motorcycle carbs, Chris has since changed to a fuel injection set up. He tells us that the current engine mapping means it's running slightly rich.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has uprated discs on the front, which are drilled and grooved, drums can be found on the rear.

The car's suspension and brakes have been fully addressed during the restoration ensuring that everything works as expected.

The Drive

Chris gets the car out on most weekends and really enjoys its nimble performance, all that power coupled with the weight savings make it quite a handful.

Electrics and Other

The car's electrical systems have been given the required attention during the restoration and modification period. The car's dashboard is rather minimal, with a battery isolator and a push-to-start ignition.

History and Paperwork

UK RHD, restored and uprated with a 2.0L Zetec engine - this hot-hatch is an extremely fun and road legal track toy.

Chris has spent a lot of money to bring this car up to the standard you see it in today. Amongst the list of work, the key point has to be the engine swap to a Mondeo Zetec 2.0L with fuel injection, gearbox rebuild, uprated front discs, and preventative mesures like painting the under-side, sills, the lower half of the car and engine bay.

This XR2 has been well looked after over the years, and only covered ~3,000 miles since the engine swap. Before the rebuild and resetting the odometer, the car was showing ~20,000 miles. Chris will be more than happy to answer any questions in the comments below.

The Mondeo engine had high miles so was completely rebuilt prior to fitting. Everything checked and replaced where necessary, with the throttle bodies on it is like a new motor starts on the button and a steady 600rpm idle.

Last MOT before rebuild was 20000 miles so could have been 20 or 120 k again everything was renewed at rebuild hence resetting odometer to 0.
