The perky hot hatch which nods to Ford’s successful rally and motorsport heritage.

From the spot lights on the front grille to the extra wide wheel arches and unique pepper pot wheels, the XR2 stood out in the Fiesta range. It was the pick of the bunch, with a 1.6L engine previously seen in its bigger brother the Escort XR3. With ~95BHP available, it may seem tame by todays hot hatch standards, but it’s still a fun little car, remembering these older cars weighed a lot less than today's equivalents.

This XR2 is coming to market from ~4 years of ownership with Steven. It comes with some history that details upkeep, restoration and maintenance of the mechanical and cosmetic aspects of this hot hatch. Presented in an attractive light Paris Blue over grey colourway, it's a lovely specification with a sporty appeal.

I've been collecting Fords since my early 20's and I've always loved the XR2 shape.

Steven is a huge Ford fan, this XR2 is one of many from his collection, and due to limited space in his already full garage, Steven has decided to part with this example.

Due to his extensive Ford knowledge, Steven is very particular with selecting the best examples for his collection, this one was no exception - an excellent unmodified and restored Fiesta XR2 example.

Exterior

The boxy body of the XR2 stands out from the other classic fords, with its red sporty pinstripe and rally ready spot lights.

Wheels and Tyres

The period correct pepper-pot wheels finished in silver make this XR2 really stand out. On this example, the wheels appear very well cared for, with no sign of any obvious damage to any of the wheels since the restoration.

The wheels are fitted with Yokohama A539 tyres and these appear to also be in great condition, dated 2016 with a good amount of tread remaining and no visible cracking or signs of age to the outside sidewalls that we could see.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this sporty hot hatch looks in good condition, with all the panel gaps around the car looking to align very well. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dings down the flanks of the car, everything looking crisp and sharp.

Paint

Finished in this iconic Paris Blue with sporty red pinstripe. The paint is finished to a lovely standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel. The car was stripped down to bare metal and resprayed in its original Paris Blue during the Toby Brooks Cars restoration in 2018.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Ford XR2 example looks good and in line with restoration, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit. The window seals look good too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

The black satin bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds all look in good condition too - they would just benefit further from some black trim restorer to bring them back to their original colour.

Interior

Striped period cloth seats offer deep bolsters to hold you in place around the corners.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats present in very good condition for the age and recorded mileage of the car.

Carpets appeared to be in great condition too.

Dashboard

The dashboard in this XR2 shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs.

With no warning lights displayed, the odometer showed a reading of ~73,371 miles on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Ford steering wheel presents in good condition in line with the mileage of this car, the gearstick looks good too.

Mechanics

The restored XR2 comes fully equipped with it's rebuilt 1.6L block producing ~95bhp ready for your next classic rally day.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.6L engine from Ford is a well regarded and reliable unit. On the day of our visit we started the car from cold, and it performed well out on the road - the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without fault.

Steven reports the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth manual five-speed gearbox powering the wheels.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears in good condition and provided a smooth journey on the sweeping Devonshire roads.

On our short drive in the car, it felt just as you'd expect for a Fiesta from this era, coming to a stop without a fuss too.

The Drive

Strap in and get ready for an extremely fun and nippy drive with this XR2. The car fired up the first time with no issues to report. On the road with Steven, the car felt tight, it had plenty of power to push it along the road and around those sweeping corners.

We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

We didn’t test all the electrics during our visit, but Steven reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

Restored mechanically and cosmetically to a very good and original finish, this XR2 is ready to be loved and enjoyed this summer.

The car is coming out of a ~4 year ownership with Steven. The car has bags of originality and with the Ford 1600CC engine which has that little bit more oomph to it than the standard Fiesta models. The car comes with a photo book documenting the restoration of the car carried out in 2018. Take a look at this history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, parts this XR2 has received over its life and the recent cosmetic restoration carried out in 2018.
