Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

"The car you always promised yourself," and they were probably right!

The 1986 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection Special represents one of the final and most desirable versions of Ford’s iconic fastback coupés. Developed as a range-topping model, it combined the Capri’s proven performance credentials with a host of luxury upgrades.

Under the bonnet sits Ford’s renowned 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine, equipped with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and producing around 160bhp. Paired with a five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential, it delivers the engaging driving experience for which the Capri is celebrated.

The Injection Special featured several enhancements over earlier 2.8i models, mainly the distinctive seven-spoke RS alloy wheels, unique graphics, half-leather Recaro sports seats, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel, giving a nice mixture of sporting and luxury appeal.

With 20 years of ownership under its belt, this 1986 Ford Capri 2.8 Injection is used to being driven and is ready to jump in and be enjoyed.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Iain the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I just love cars from this era; they have so much more character than boring modern cars.

Iain has always had a soft spot for cars from this era, which he's thoroughly enjoyed over the past 20 years, during which he drove it daily for several years.

A purchase from Trade Classics not so long ago, as a surprise for his wife, they now own a 205 GTI, which means the Capri, alongside working away, isn't really being used that much anymore.

With storage costs for both, Iain has now decided it is the right time to sell his iconic Capri.

Iain will be happy to answer any questions in the comment section below.

Exterior

A glorious blend of fastback aerodynamics straight from the 1980s.

Wheels and Tyres

Being the 2.8 Injection Special, the car came with seven-spoke RS alloy wheels. Iain has upgraded the original 13-inch to a larger 15-inch version from the Brooklands model. The wheels are generally in good condition, with just a small amount of corrosion in places.

The tyres are a matching set of Michelin Pilot Exalto tyres, all with a good amount of tread remaining.

Please take the time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The Capri appears to be in good shape, with equal panel gaps and no noticeable dings or dents that we could see. There are some minor areas of blistering, mainly noted on the front edge of the passenger wing and a couple of blisters on the bottom of the driver’s side wing.

The factory sunroof tilts up as it should, but for some reason it won’t slide back. Iain hasn’t looked into this or tried forcing it open.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take the time to review all media files to assess the car’s condition for yourself.

image

Paint

Finished in 'Caspian Blue' over 'Strato Silver', the paintwork is in good condition with just the odd age-related mark and some swirl marks.

Originally, according to Iain and the colour plate on the slam panel, the car was 'Nimbus Grey' over 'Staros Silver', but he is unsure why it was repainted. The repaint was carried out to a very high standard, as even inside, the boot floor is now in 'Caspian Blue'.

The images are taken from a range of angles to show the car as you would see it in person, so please take the time to fully assess the high-resolution photos and videos before forming your own opinion of the paintwork.

image

Glass and Trim

All the windows appear to be in good condition, with no noticeable or excessive scratches. The window seals and scrapers also appear to be in good order, with no perishing or shrinkage.

The four headlights appear to have bright reflectors behind the damage-free lenses, and the rear light lenses are also free of splits or cracks.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Half-leather Recaros were the crème de la crème of seats for a sporting Ford in the 80s.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in grey leather with a fabric centre, the factory Recaro front seats have a small hole on the driver’s side bolster. However, the seats still have a solid feel to the bolsters and could probably be repaired quite easily.

The rear seat and both door panels are in good condition, with minimal signs of age.

Throughout the car, the carpets are in good condition, again with no real signs of excessive wear and tear.

Inside the boot is a spare seven-spoke RS alloy wheel, but it is the original 13-inch version.

image

Dashboard

The grey dashboard has unfortunately started to show its age, with a few cracks across the top. With that said, these could be repaired or even swapped for another dashboard, which sounds more daunting than it actually is, or you could just leave it as - it is 40 years old, after all with a keen reserve set.

The instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows ~53,444 miles at the time of our visit.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The factory leather-trimmed three-spoke steering wheel has some age-related marks, in keeping with the Capri's age.

The five-speed gear knob is in good condition, with the numbers clearly visible.

image

Mechanics

Ford’s fantastic 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine was fitted with a K-Jetronic fuel-injection system to improve performance and economy.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.8i fires up nicely and quickly comes to a smooth idle. It runs with no issues reported by Iain, who used the car for several years as his daily and enjoyed every trip.

As standard for the Special, the Capri came with a five-speed gearbox.

The gears are easy to select, and the car pulls strongly across the range.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the Capri is very smooth, with no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension. You will also notice it sits nice and level rather than sagging at the rear, which would suggest weak leaf springs.

The brakes bring the car to a stop in a straight line, with no juddering through the pedal or any issues reported by Iain.

image

The Drive

Peering over that famously long bonnet, you are pulled along by the heavy, mechanical rumble of a 160-horsepower Cologne V6 engine that loves to deliver a punchy, old-school soundtrack through its twin exhausts. No modern or electronic safety nets interrupt you as you enjoy a stiffly balanced chassis and a limited-slip differential.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear is generally in good condition, with just some light age-related wear.

A Sony CD head unit is fitted, and everything appears to be working as it should, except for the clock.

image

History and Paperwork

Dating back several years, the history for the Capri appears to be consistent.

Iain has saved invoices over his 20-year ownership, but generally, he has never had to have any major work carried out and has done the servicing himself; as a qualified helicopter engineer, tackling a Capri service is pretty simple.

There are invoices from previous keepers and also old MOT certificates, which date back several years.

There's no doubt about it, the 2.8 Injection Special is one of the more desirable model Capris to own, and they are becoming increasingly thin on the ground.

Did you take Ford’s advertising slogan on board in the 80s? ”The car you always promised yourself". If not, now is your chance to do just that with this very usable 1986 Capri 2.8 Injection Special.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including photo ID and V5 verification, as well as a history check on the vehicle. This is a professional HPI check that will highlight if the car has previously been stolen, recorded as being involved in an accident or has any outstanding finance. Please note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We’ve summarised our own view of the car based on information provided by the seller; however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video each car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own assessment from the comfort of your home. So please sit back, have a cuppa, and take your time reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are also welcomed on all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a suitable time; we just need to speak to you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car, just like at a traditional auction house.

Hello Iain, could you please advise when it was last painted, including the silver lower section and have you had any quotes for repairing the blisters on both front wings and door bottom please? Any reason why I couldn’t turn up and drive it a few hundred miles home should I win the auction? Thank you.
