Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Once billed as 'The car you always promised yourself' by Ford - we couldn't agree more.

The Ford Capri was a serious and successful attempt at combining a sports car with family transport, and this Mark II Laser certainly achieves that. The Ford Capri Mk II - 'Capri II' was first introduced in 1974, and production continued until 1987. Ford chose to make the new car more suited to everyday driving by shortening the bonnet and enlarging the cabin. This example featured the larger naturally aspirated 2.0L engine, with laser trim, offering a fully populated instrument pod, leather steering wheel, four-spoke alloy wheels from the previous 'S' models, and colour-coded grille and mirrors.

The vendor purchased this car in 1993. It's his 2nd Capri and over his previous ~30 years, it's been kept the reserved for special trips out and notably his daughter's wedding. It comes to market with just 2 former keepers registered, and has covered just ~10,000 miles in the current ownership. The seller will action a new MOT when the car sells.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Gary the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've truly enjoyed owning this Capri. I've taken it to France and back, enjoyed a few local trips, and even used it for my daughters wedding.

Gary purchased the car with every intention of using it as his enjoyable daily driver, a very practical yet sporty coupe. After purchasing the car in 1993, he used it on a trip to the south of France. Upon returning, he was offered a company car and has since reserved the Capri for only very occasional use, including classic car shows and his daughter's wedding.

Gary reports that he will action a fresh MOT the moment the Capri sells. The car features paperwork dating back to 1987. Gary will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Classic 1980s styling from Ford, this example in black with Laser detailing looks the part.

Wheels and Tyres

The car comes equipped with 13", 4-spoke wheels, shared between the "S" model and "Laser". They present in good condition, with a few areas of corrosion visible on the rear wheels.

Wrapped in Tracmax X-Privilo TX2 HM tyres all around, dated 2017. The TracMax tires show a significant amount of tread remaining and no signs of cracking from our observations. We have provided exterior photos for you to examine the condition for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this Ford Capri 2.0 Laser appears to be in good original condition, with all the panel gaps around the car aligning well. During our visit, we didn't spot any obvious major damage, just some small dings, dents, and stone chips. It's worth noting that according to Gary, all of the panels on this car are original, as it came out of the factory.

We have provided more detailed observations through our high-resolution images and videos. We encourage you to review all the media files for a comprehensive view of the car's condition and to assess it for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Ford "A9" black, the paint exhibits even coverage and consistent colour across each panel. During our visit we did notice the occasional very small and minor stone chip at the front as mentioned, however, these aren't very noticeable without close examination.

Once again, we've provided high-resolution images and videos of the car for you to evaluate the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this Capri example appears to be in great condition. During our visit, we didn't notice any chips, cracks, or discoloration. The window seals also appear to be in good condition and align with the overall state of the car.

Additionally, the bumpers, door handles, and window surrounds are all in good condition.

Interior

A classic cabin from the 80s, grey cloth seats finished with patterned trim.

Seats and Carpets

The grey cloth seats with patterned inserts have held their shape very well over the years, as you would expect with cherished ownership.

A similar story is told with the door cards and carpets. For a detailed view of the cabin, please take a look at the extensive media provided.

Dashboard

The dashboard is covered in grey vinyl, with classic styling from the instrument binnacle.

The dashboard in this Capri shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs, and no warning lights are displayed. The odometer showed a reading of approximately 49,489 miles during our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A leather-wrapped Ford wheel is fitted and remains in good condition, which aligns with the mileage of this car. Being picky, we noticed the Ford logo is not centred.

An aftermarket gearstick has been fitted as pictured. For a closer look, please check out the image gallery to see the detail.

Mechanics

Fitted with the larger of the two options, the 2.0L Pinto engine offered ~100BHP from new.

Engine and Gearbox

Equipped with the robust 2.0L Pinto Engine, the car appears highly original under the bonnet. During our visit, we started the car from cold, and it performed admirably on the road; the engine pulled nicely, idled smoothly, and ran without any faults.

Gary reports that the car starts from cold without any issues and drives well, with its manual gearbox providing smooth power to the rear wheels. Be sure to check out the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer inspection underneath the Capri and its engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension appears to be in good condition, providing a smooth journey on the sweeping Radstock roads.

During our short drive in the car, it exhibited handling characteristics typical of a sports car from this era and came to a stop smoothly without any issues. Gary reports recently changing the pads and discs on this car.

The Drive

Everyone knows someone who owned a Capri at some point during their life; it's such a loved car that offers an extremely fun and nippy drive, which Gary has thoroughly enjoyed during a road trip down to France and local classic car shows.

On the road with Gary, it felt tight and responsive, with ample power to tackle various driving conditions. We didn’t notice any unusual noises coming from the engine or suspension either.

Electrics and Other

While we didn’t test all the electronics during our visit, Gary reports that to his knowledge, all of them are functional and operational. The car retains its original stereo unit, which works well.

Whilst on holiday with the car in France as mentioned, the passenger door lock was forced in, and so the key no longer works in it.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market after ~30 years of ownership and with only ~49,500 miles on the clock, this car has just 2 former keepers and is a remarkably original example.

The car is coming out of ~30 years of ownership with Gary. It boasts the larger 2.0L engine with a manual gearbox, recently refreshed brakes, all in a highly original package.

Take a look at the history and paperwork media to see the previous MOT reports, servicing records, and parts this Ford Capri has received over its life. The car currently does not have an MOT, yet Gary has reported he will get one actioned as soon as the car is sold.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Key Bidding Facts

What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price that the seller will let the car go for. We work with sellers to set realistic reserves in line with market pricing – we don’t take on vehicles with unrealistic pricing. Reserve met / not met labeling may or may not be announced during the auction – this is just like a traditional auction house, i.e. bidders may only know when they’ve been successful at the end of the auction.

If the reserve hasn’t been met at the end of the auction then we work with the highest bidder to try to work out a deal with the seller.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
