Introduction

Ashley Dawson
Professional Consigner

We’ve always admired the Capri, and this 1987 2.0 Laser really explains why: classic lines, a clean interior, and that dependable Pinto engine. A true driver’s car that still turns heads nearly 40 years after it was produced.

The Ford Capri has always held a special place in the hearts of enthusiasts, and this 1987 2.0 Laser is a great example of why. Its unmistakable styling, with long bonnet and rear-wheel-drive layout, embodies everything that made the Capri an icon of its era.

Powered by the ever-reliable 2.0 Pinto engine and paired with a manual gearbox, it offers that engaging driving feel that modern cars often lack. This particular example presents very well, making it a genuine opportunity to own a piece of classic Ford history that’s both usable and collectible.

It comes to market from just over ~7 years with our vendor, who's grandfather bought the car new in 1987. It even comes with a Haynes manual and huge collection of Capri Club magazines!

This listing was written from information supplied by Ashley after meeting Daniel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This Capri has been in my family from new, passed down from my grandfather, and while I haven’t driven it myself, it’s always been a special part of my life.

Daniel, the owner, told us that he has owned the Ford Capri for the past ~7 years. The car has been in the family from new, first being owned by his Grandfather who passed it down. Daniel the owner is regrettably selling due to lack of space.

Daniel would be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in 'Caspian Blue' with 'Strato Silver' trim, this Capri Laser looks every inch the classic 1980s coupé.

Wheels and Tyres

This example sits on Brooklands alloy wheels, which are in good condition. No major kerbing was noted, and the alloys present cleanly with only minor wear in line with age. The offside front wheel is missing the Ford badge from the centre cap.

The tyres are Avon, showing healthy tread levels across the set. On our visit we noticed some slight cracking on the sidewalls of the tyres. The original wheels and Tyres are included in the sale.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Ford and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The body presents very well for its age, with straight panels and even panel gaps throughout.

Importantly, we didn’t observe any obvious corrosion to the sills, arches or lower panels – areas that are often susceptible on Capris. Overall, the finish complements the car’s original character and makes a strong impression. Daniel told us the black around the front lower spoiler and arches is wax oil as the whole underside of the car is covered for extra protection.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The paintwork in 'Caspian Blue' retains a nice depth of shine, with only light age-related marks noted on close inspection.

The 'Strato Silver' trim has a few marks on the front bumper but overall in solid condition.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass appears clear and free from major scratches or chips. Window seals and rubber trims remain in good order, with no signs of perishing. Chrome elements, badges, and exterior plastics are all intact and sit well against the paintwork, adding to the car’s well-preserved appearance.

Take a look through the image galleries and review video. We take you across all areas of the car as if you were standing there yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail how the car is presented.

image

Interior

A true time warp interior – practical yet unmistakably retro, the Capri’s cabin carries all the charm of its late-1980s heritage.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats remain in smart order, showing only light use to the bolsters and bases. The trim is complete, with the Laser’s signature detail touches still intact.

Carpets show near to no wear and are protected by rubber mats. The sale includes the original Laser mats.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard appears free from major cracks and all dials and switches present cleanly.

Interior controls retain a nice tactile feel.

Daniel the owner confirm the controls to be in working order, to the best of his knowledge.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in line with the rest of the interior and present well.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and check over the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

The reliable 2.0-litre Pinto engine makes this Capri a practical and enjoyable classic: easy to run and rewarding to drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The 2.0-litre inline-four starts willingly and settles into a steady idle. The five-speed manual gearbox selects gears cleanly.

Daniel the owner reported no crunching or sloppiness with the gearbox and clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension provides a compliant ride, with no undue knocks or rattles reported. Brakes pull the car up confidently in a straight line.

Daniel the owner reassured us the Capri has no issues with the suspension or brakes.

image

The Drive

Due to the Capri having no MOT at the time of visit. We were unable to check the on the road segment.

Daniel the owner reported no issues with the Capri.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all the electrics during our visit but Daniel reported all the electrics to be in working order, with no faults that he knows of.

image

History and Paperwork

Supplied with a good MOT history, it has been in storage for the past ~20 years.

The Capri comes with a good amount of previous MOTs, with very minimal miles having been covered between then. The vehicle has been stored for ~20 years, so there is no current MOT. The underside has been treated with wax oil for extra protection.

Included in the sale is a fantastic collection of Ford Capri Club Magazines and a number of original parts/extras.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

If you look on government MOT checker it states blue.
It was registered blue in March 1987 I know this because I was there when it was picked up from eckington motors ?

Hi, this is clearly a well kept and cherished car. When was the black waxoyl originally applied around the lower sills and vallances please? Also I can see what appears to be a bit of overspray around the windscreen rubber in way of the lower corner area on the passenger near side. When was any paintwork carried out to the car please as far as you know? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply Daniel. I’ve only just noticed though that the HPI report shown in the gallery states that the car was subject to colour change from red in 1993. Any idea why this is showing on the report please and is it correct?

Thanks for the quick reply. I even did my own hpi check 10 minutes ago and its definitely down as a colour change on the 1st May 1993 from red. Its a strange one but not unheard of for the database to be incorrect at some point. Thanks again for the rapid reply.
