Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

A perky little hot hatch with a nod to the rally and motorsport heritage of Ford.

From the spot lights on the front grille to the extra wide wheel arches and unique pepper pot wheels, the XR2 stood out in the Fiesta range. It was the pick of the bunch, with a 1.6L engine previously seen in its bigger brother the Escort XR3, and 40L fuel tank. With ~95BHP available, it may seem tame by todays hot hatch standards but it’s still a fun little car, these older cars weighed a lot less than todays equivalents.

This car is coming to market from ~2 year ownership, with 11 former keepers registered. This is an honest little classic that's managed to survive the test of time. If you're in the market for a drivers classic, see if this one meets your needs.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Stuart the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'd always wanted one since I was 18, and I'm glad to have had the chance to own and drive one.

Stuart has had this Fiesta XR2 since 2020, and covered ~2,000 miles with it in that time. Whilst out in the car we got our share of waves/thumbs up, it's a bit of a cult classic and memories of when they were new were one of the motivating factors for buying.

He tells us "I love the looks and the sound of the engine", it's a design which Ford really nailed. Having enjoyed the car over the last 2 years, Stuart is now looking to buy a motorhome with his wife for holidays and touring, and so the XR2 comes to market. He'll be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

With a chunky bodykit the XR2 stands out, the spot lights and red pinstripe on the bumpers give it a real sporty look.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the classic 13" "Pepper Pot" wheels, they are instantly recognisable. Most of the wheels show signs of curb marks but only on the outer rim, the paint was also a bit pitted too.

There was a mixture of tyres on the car, both rears were a matching set and fronts were a different matching set. All tyres had a good amount of tread left on them. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

Bodywork

The bodywork is in decent condition for the age of the car, but we noticed a few signs of corrosion under the paint on the bonnet and tailgate, what you would expect for an unrestored car.

The panels all lined up well as pictured, and operation of doors etc was good. Please refer to the hi-resolution images and videos of the car to confirm the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in red, the paint is overall in ok condition, as above we noticed some corrosion on the bonnet and a couple of visible rusty places behind the front bumper and passenger side door sill/skirt. There are also some other areas like the top of the offside sill where the paint has come off with age.

Again, please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the paintwork for yourself.

Glass and Trim

The glass seemed to be in good condition, it looked to be original too, as the registration is etched in the corner of each pane. The trim looked on good order, with everything present by the look of it.

Both side-skirts of the bodykit weren't sitting exactly where they should be as pictured. Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

Interior

Continuing the sporty feel on the inside, the period cloth seats have a striped detail and deeper bolsters than a standard Fiesta.

Seats and Carpets

The cloth seats show a little bit of wear but are in very good condition for the age and recorded mileage of the car. Carpets appeared to be in good condition, with only a couple of light stains noticed throughout the car.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The XR2 features a simple but effective dashboard, big bright white dials with all the information the driver needs.

It has a driver centric dash with the radio, including tape deck, integrated into the same moulding as the dials. The dashboard was in good condition with dials seemingly working as expected.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looked to be in good condition with light wear from age, however we did notice there seemed to be a small bit missing from the top left of the wheel. The gearstick also seemed to be in good condition with only slight wear from use over the years.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

Mechanics

The XR2 comes with a 1.6L engine producing ~95BHP, it might not seem like much, but it's a good match for this hot hatch.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine started at first attempt and seemed to run well, it sounded raspy as you would expect. We didn't get a chance to really open it up on the drive but Stuart told us it does zip along nicely.

On the drive we noticed the manual gearbox going into gear smoothly with no unexpected noises or crunches too. Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension did ride reasonably well, if a bit stiff which you might expect from a hot hatch. We witnessed no unusual noises from the suspension whilst out on the drive with Stuart. We didn't have a chance to test the brakes in anger on the drive. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

As mentioned above this little XR2 drives well, it definitely feels like a hot hatch with the stiff suspension, and raspy engine note. While it only has ~95BHP it is also a light car with a weight of only ~840kg giving it a 0-62MPH time of 9.3 seconds. This may seem slow by today's standards but it is still a fun car. To see the XR2 in motion please take a look at the on the road video.

Electrics and Other

The XR2 is quite a simple car with not too many electric parts, it doesn't even have powered windows. We noticed the radio working as expected whilst out on the drive with Stuart, he told us the rest of the electrical components were in good working order to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

An iconic 80s hot hatch, this XR2 is coming to market from ~2 year ownership and presents as a drivers car rather than a garage queen.

We don't have much history on the car unfortunately from the recent MOT we also have three previous years milage recordings. However there seems to be a discrepancy in the 2017 recording, Stuart will be able to answer any questions you may have in the comments section below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
