Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Automotive Editor, Photographer and Consigner

Old-skool cool, enormously entertaining and prices remaining strong for genuine and original examples like this one.

Originally launched in 1986, the addition of the twin-cam turbo Cosworth engine transformed the family hatchback into a genuine road-racer. It soon re-established the brand back on the race and rally tracks, giving the Ford company a much-needed publicity and image boost. Further developments in 1987 increased the power to 224bhp and sealed the cars legendary status as a performance car with practicality and durability.

Here we have an exciting opportunity for Fast Ford fans as opportunities for clean, original and low-use RS Cosworths don't come up often. When you consider this car's excellent condition, matching numbers, just 3 owners, original spec and the fact that it has been garaged for 30 years in the hands of a true petrolhead, this 1987 Ford must be considered something of a holy grail for Ford fans.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Tony the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned and maintained this car for over 30 years - it's been a constant in my life but now is the time I have to find a new owner to take over.

Motivated by the British Touring Car Championship success of the RS Cosworth, Tony bought the Cosworth in 1991 and used it as a daily driver until the mid-90s. It was taken to a few shows, as part of his interest in Motorsports but never driven on the racetrack. It was then used sparingly until the mid-2000s.

Since that time it's been stored in his dry garage. Aware of its potential investment value, Tony retained the car, making sure it was in the best of working condition. As Tony is mechanically minded he has taken care of the car by changing the cam belt before storage and would regularly start the car bringing it up to temperature with other tasks, to ensure a smooth recommissioning in the future.

As his mechanical motivation and interests are now towards classic motorbikes, he has decided that his under-used RS Cosworth needs to find a new home.

Exterior

Lovely back exterior of this Cosworth really stands out from the crowd - easily identifiable as a true petrolhead's car.

Wheels and Tyres

The Dunlop SP Sport tyres are period correct for the car and for those who like authenticity all date from the early '90s. All have good tread but their age suggests that their performance will have to be limited.

The 15-inch cross-spoke alloy wheels with the original centre caps show minor suggestions of age, but are free from kerb damage and could be brought up to perfection with a little effort.

Bodywork

The first impression of the bodywork is predictably very positive. The panel fit looks factory correct all around the car, with panel gaps as one would hope for. The metalwork is free from any significant blemishes, with a handful of tiny dings noted on the off-side of the car and a couple on the boot lid.

The structure of the car follows the external condition, with the floor pan, inner wings, engine and boot bays all looking solid condition during our visit. The bumpers are scuff-free with just the smallest hint of age.

Paint

The paint finish is very good all-round, with the lustre offering a deep shine throughout. There are no mismatched panel colours or significant front stone chips damage noted. A handful of minor door edge chips are the extent of any issues.

The owner mentioned that the front bumper was subject to a repaint early in the cars life but there is no evidence of poor repair - as a result despite the low frontal ground clearance, the underside of the front air dam is remarkably clean - please view the mechanical video and exterior image gallery to view.

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good condition, free from any significant scratches or damage. The front screen has light lamination damage on the lower corners.

The body trim, glass and door rubbers are in very good condition, with no issues of note.

We have captured high resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the exterior.

Interior

In almost showroom condition, the interior reflects the owner's fastidious nature - imagine how proud you'd be taking this original example to summer shows.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro seats retain their firmness and there is a little fabric bagginess in places due to its age.

The carpets and mats are very good throughout the car, with the boot also being fitted with a rubber mat. There is no suggestion that the boot has been used excessively.

The headlining is good and clean. The whole of the interior was damp-free.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in superb order, with only two minor drill holes noted on the top of the facia. In terms of wear or other damage, the car is above expectations of a car of this age and mileage.

The tape player is original and fully operational. All of the dials and switches are in good visual condition and all are said to be working.

We have captured high resolution photos and videos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear stick are in very good condition, with no significant suggestion of wear.

Please review the interior media pack for a closer look.

Mechanics

Engine originality is the key for this RS Cosworth - this is the bit you've been waiting for.

Engine and Gearbox

This is the business end of the Cosworth and it doesn't disappoint, being largely original.

The front suspension mount trim and fittings above the front headlamps have been polished up, along with the additional cut-off switch and aftermarket air filter are the only non-original aspects of the engine.

The stainless steel Magnex exhaust system was mounted onto the car in 1997, although the original front pipe also comes as part of the sale.

The engine starts up with no issues, with the car reaching temperature and ticking over with no issues. Due to the long-standing storage of the car, it would be advisable to conduct a full check-up but the owner had kept on top of any issues while the car was in use. Tony has told us that the engine has not been tuned and it retains its factory set-up.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes and steering appeared not to cause any issues but again would need to be subject to a full mechanical check.

The general condition of the components and the fact the car moves with no binding or knocking is a testament to the car being regularly checked by the owner.

The Drive

The car is currently on SORN and has not had an MOT for several years, but is started up on a regular basis.

The handling a driving ability of the RS Cosworth is well documented, but it also offers a docile and easy to manage experience if you're light with the gas pedal.

Electrics and Other

Electrically, the car is said to be in full working order including the electric aerial function.

The car is fitted with a pair of desirable aftermarket headlamps covers.

History and Paperwork

The car has not needed much attention in its 30 years of ownership - it's a rare and original car that is sure to create desire in the Fast Ford community.

The Cosworth's 3 owner history is documented in the paperwork and appears to have spent much of its life in the South-east of the country. The car comes with service stamps up to 1992, after which its use was reduced to occasional dry use. The owner has not needed to spend much on the car over his 30-year tenure, a new clutch and water pump being the core items.

The car has also been fitted with a Vecta anti-theft system and a Magnex exhaust system. In addition, it comes with its owner manual wallet with a complement of its original handbooks and supplements, two keys and an additional fuel cap key.

Tony will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Hi I am currently bidding and a collector. When was the cambelt and water pump last changed and has the car ever had any welding?.

I would hate to see this car go to a dealer as it deserves to be maintained and with others !!!.

Kind regards

Tim
