Ford followed up the RS1600i in considerable style with the RS Turbo - only the quickest cars from the Ford line up are awarded and equipped with the famous RS badge.

The Series 2 Escort RS Turbo was produced between 1986 to 1990, and although it utilised the Series 1 1600cc fuel-injected CVH engine, it was now fitted with a Garrett T3 Turbo, lower gearing, improved gearbox, limited-slip differential, larger clutch, intercooler, stiffer suspension, uprated anti-roll bars, larger brakes, and the list still goes on.

There are plenty of giveaways from the exterior that tells you that this is a very desirable Escort RS Turbo, with its rally-inspired fog spotlights, 15" alloys, wheel arch extensions, side skirts, and spoiler. The car produced an impressive ~132BHP, top speed of 125mph, and a 0-60 time of 8.3 seconds.

Darren has been the owner of this Escort RS Turbo for the previous 6 years, he's poured hundreds of hours returning the car to the highly original spec you see today, with a couple of tasteful tweaks. Finding cars that are in this condition and not heavily modified is becoming increasingly hard, so do take a good look through the listing.

Meet the owner

This car gives me an awesome nostalgic experience every time I take it for a spin - it makes me smile from ear to ear.

Darren spent his youth owning many different Fords, including Escorts and Fiesta RS turbos. Around six years ago he really wanted to re-live that experience and spent months looking around for an example good enough, but also to work on and bring back to the condition you see today.

Over the last six years, Darren has spent hundreds of hours into restoring this car, and chosen subtle modifications which include lowering springs on its standard shocks, a full Mongoose stainless steel exhaust system. He also fitted new brakes and wheel bearings, and fuel pump and tank, powder-coated wheels and new tyres. He mentions the very limited number and subtle modifications can be easily removed if the new custodian wishes to put it back to standard specification.

Darren reports that this Escort RS Turbo has been difficult to let go of, and mentions the way the classic market is going, he'll probably never be able to replace it, however, he's keeping busy with a new project and will use the sale to fund his future work on that car. Rosso Red paintwork combined with a boxy body kit and rally lights make for a very attractive variant of the Escort.

Wheels and Tyres

The car is fitted with 15" seven-spoke RS alloys from the factory, the overall condition of the wheels is excellent. During the restoration, Darren treated the wheels to a fresh powder coating.

For peace of mind, Darren had all the wheels fitted with new tyres - Toyo Proxes T1 R's all dated 2017.

The bodywork of this Escort RS Turbo looks in excellent condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align very well. Under the bonnet you'll see the original manufacturer seals for the front wings are all intact along with their original date codes.

If we're being really picky there is some slight wear around the driver's door lock, two small patches of very small bubbling on the roof and another small patch under the boot carpet - you'll have to get very close to notice these areas.

Finished in an iconic RS Rosso Red, which really suits the 80s boxy shape of this performance Ford.

The paint appeared in great condition on our visit, and finished to a very high standard, with even coverage and colour across each panel.

Glass and Trim

All presented in excellent and original condition, a really nice example, the rubber trim all looks good and in line with the restoration. The passenger windows show its original security stickers, and each panel is etched with its number plate - showings its originality.


Sports Recaro seats offer the driver the perfect blend of comfort and performance, and what styling too, you've gotta love the retro cloth pattern.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro bucket seats keep you firmly in place, so you can rest assured that any corner you approach these seats will comfortably grip you in place.

Both seats look in great condition in line with the rest of the interior, with hardly any signs of wear.

The car is also fitted with carpets throughout, which present in excellent condition.


The dashboard of the Escort RS Turbo has no signs of any major damage or scuffs. With no warning lights displayed, and the odometer is showing a reading of ~132,513 miles. The dash has a quality black-plastic finish, which is in excellent condition, including the centre console.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and five-speed gear selector present in great original condition, and are consistent with the overall presentation of the restored cabin.


Stainless steel Mongoose exhaust notes combined with a characterful whistle from the turbo creates a proper retro sports sound.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by the reliable and robust 1.6L Ford block with the real punch coming from the Garrett T3 Turbo. Listen out for raspy exhaust notes from the Mongoose full stainless steel exhaust kit Darren fitted. He's also had the engine rebuilt, powder coated and fitted JS Performance tubing for an extremely clean and smart engine bay.

The car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth five-speed gearbox powering the front wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

The car received new discs, pads, and lower suspension during the restoration.

Darren reports a very enjoyable, comfortable, yet firm ride in the Escort RS Turbo Series 2, with suspension providing support where it should and prompt stopping power from the brakes.

The Drive

The Ford Escort RS Turbo was the first-ever front-wheel-drive car to get a limited-slip diff. The 1.6L engine was turbocharged offering you 132bhp. Not only does the 80s aerodynamic body kit look great, but wait till you hear the noise the engine and turbo make, it'll blow you away. Built purely with motorsport in mind.

Electrics and Other

All of the standard electrical fittings are said to be fully functional. The car is fitted with an aftermarket CD/Radio.

is the defect in the paint on the drivers door filler sinking or a dent ?
do you know when the respray was done ?


am I right in assuming its not a 90 spec car but had 90 spec parts fitted
