Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

With the need for a four-wheel drive car to compete with the likes of Audi - Ford developed the XR4x4 with the power of the 2.8 from the XR4i.

In 1985 at the Geneva Motor Show, Ford launched their improved four-wheel drive Sierra. Based on the XR4i, the car was initially available as a three-door, but soon moved over to the five-door hatchback you see here today. The four-wheel drive system used 34% drive at the front and 66% to the rear, coupled with a prop-shaft. The suspension used was from the XR4i. This was given stiffer springs and a lower ride height which resulted in an improved ride quality, with better handling. Originally the Sierra was fitted with the XR4i 2.8 litre V6 Cologne engine, until January 1989 when the 2.9i was introduced, with a new engine management system and improved MT75 gearbox, and which is the model Eric has on offer with us today.

This 1989 Sierra XR4x4i has been stored off the road for a number of years. In that time the previous keeper has carried out some restoration work such as a full respray and some light renovation to the mechanical side of the car, before the current owner Eric purchased it. With the XR purchased, Eric has completed some necessary jobs before enjoying it for a few months to satisfy his need for a classic Ford.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Eric the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I'm a classic Ford fan through and through - this is another classic Ford I've managed to tick off my list of wanting to own.

Eric has owned the Sierra since September 2021, having only purchased the classic Ford so that he can tick it off his list of Fords that he wanted to own, as when he was younger they were, like most performance Fords, out of a lot of peoples price and insurance range.

Eric came across the Sierra whilst searching for anything '80s / '90s Ford. The car, as you can see from the MOT history, has been standing for around 11 years, during which time it has been given a full respray and some light recommissioning work.

With the itch now scratched and the need for a V6 done, Eric has decided to let the car go to hopefully another classic Ford fan like himself.

Eric will be more than happy to answer any questions you have in the comments below.

Exterior

A Sierra 5-door hatchback, you may think, but this is a little more special being the infamous XR4x4i.

Wheels and Tyres

The wheels are the original 7 spoke RS style alloy wheels, which do have some age related marks, but look to be free from excessive corrosion.

The tyres have a good amount of tread remaining, but there is also some sign of cracking to the side wall of the front passenger tyre. We have captured this alongside overview videos of all wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The XR4x4i looks to be in lovely condition, with the doors, boot and bonnet looking to align as they should, and there are no noticeable car park injuries to be seen. The front bumper does look to sit a little low from the side where it meets the wing, but this may just need some adjustment.

Please take the time to look through the hi-resolution images we have taken for a more detailed look at this beautiful XR4x4i Sierra.

Paint

Finished in Flint Grey, the Sierra XR 4x4 looks stunning in all lights, as you can see. Typical of the '80s, the XR wears a twin pinstripe running down the length of the car, which is intact. The car has received a full respray during its time off the road, but before its time with Eric.

There are an odd few, small stone chips, but it has to be said that these really are few and far between. Looking around the car is very pleasing, with no real noticeable swirl marks to mention.

The images taken are from various angles and reflections showing off the wonderful lines of the Sierra XR at its best, as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition of the exterior.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car does have some light age related scratches which can be seen in the sunlight, but these are not excessive and look to be in keeping with the age and mileage of the Sierra.

The seals on the doors have perished a little and started to split, but as with most Fords of this age, parts are readily available for easy replacement. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a more detailed look at the exterior.

Interior

Grey velour - could there be any other material for a Ford XR from the late '80s?

Seats and Carpets

The velour material in the armchair like front seats is in excellent condition for the age of the vehicle, with no obvious signs of any wear to the bolsters. The seats are definitely in better condition than you would expect for the mileage. The same can be said for the rear seat and also the door cards which are in equally nice condition.

The light grey carpet has been protected with a set of rubber mats, keeping it free from dirt and wear. Up above, unfortunately the headlining has started to sag, as they tend to do with age. The parcel shelf has escaped the trend of having 6x9 speaker holes cut into it. The boot carpet is in place with the full sized spare alloy wheel. Please check out the detailed images in the interior section to fully appreciate the interior of this Sierra.

Dashboard

Quite unusual to see, but very welcome, is that the dashboard on the Sierra has escaped any cracking. There are four small holes near the passenger side where it looks to have had a mobile phone holder fitted at some point. The instruments are reported to be working as they should and the odometer is reading ~08,307, which would technically be ~108,307, should it have enough digits.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in good order with just a little age related wear to be seen on the rim, and the same can be said for the gear knob. There is a small tear in the gear gaiter, but again, this is an item which can easily be replaced.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images of the interior.

Mechanics

2.9 litres of Cologne V6 power graces the engine bay of the XR4x4i Sierra - with a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 129 mph.

Engine and Gearbox

The V6 fires into life as you would expect, with no untoward noises coming from the engine bay, as you can hear from the mechanical review video. The car has covered approximately ~1,766 in the past 11 years, and is running just as it should.

Fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox the change is smooth and the gears select with ease, Eric reports. There has been an uprated exhaust which helps the V6 breathe a little easier, and also enhances the wonderful V6 tones.

Suspension and Brakes

Looking at the suspension from the underside, some light surface corrosion can be seen, but this should be expected for the age, and there doesn't appear to be any leaks from the shock absorbers, which we could see.

The brakes are working as they should, bringing the car to a halt in a straight line. Eric reports there is no juddering through the brake pedal.

The Drive

As you can see and hear in our Mechanical Review video, the XR4x4i sounds fantastic as the 2.9 V6 pulls through the gears. Eric reports that the car is fun to drive. It handles really well, especially with it being a 4-wheel-drive. It's certainly a car which ticks all the boxes of any classic Ford, as you would expect from the XR range.

Please take a look at our Mechanical Review video for the Sierra.

Electrics and Other

Electrically, the car is working as it should, with no issues reported. It retains the original Ford power amplifier, but the head-unit has been replaced with a more modern unit with USB. Although the unit is more modern, it fits well in with the originality of the Sierra.

There is some light wear to the electric window buttons where the picture of the window has worn off, but these are working as they should.

History and Paperwork

Stored for 11 years, the Sierra has missed a number of MOTs - however the most recent one went through with no advisories.

The owner’s handbook and original radio instructions are present. Unfortunately, no so regarding the history, as it has been lost prior to Eric buying the car.

The MOT is valid until the 22nd February 2022, and as mentioned, it passed in 2021 with no advisories.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned an HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
