Ford carried on their tradition of sporty editions of their production cars, this time in the shape of the Escort XR3i.

The Ford Escort is a small family car with a huge cult following. This is the fourth generation and a sporting model which we all know as the iconic XR3i. The car was initially launched to compete with VW's new Golf GTi, therefore Ford pulled out all the stops and fitted a tuned version of the 1.6L CVH engine, uprated suspension, and cosmetic alterations.

This example finished in black with red detailing is coming out of 4 years ownership. The car presents in excellent condition, it's clearly been cherished over the years, hard to find coupe examples like this.

Meet the owner

This was my dream car as a teenager, it's such a joy to own and drive.

Gary bought the car in March 2017 and since has really enjoyed his ownership of this low mileage '80s classic from his teenage years. He's always wanted to own one, and he's enjoyed taking this car to various shows and car meets. He actually met the original owner of the car, who informed him that the car had full service history with the Ford main dealer for the first 5 years.

Gary has kept on top of any servicing as required over his 4 years of ownership as detailed in the invoice section. Having covered ~500 miles in that time, it's a car that has been pampered in its later life. He will be more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The iconic hot hatch with a large sporty performance appeal.

Wheels and Tyres

The distinctive Escort 5-spoke wheels give the XR3i a sporty stance over the standard model, very '80s.

The wheels and tyres present in very good condition, the rubber of choice is Pirelli Cinturato P1's which all appear to have a good amount of tread on them, ready for the new owner.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks very straight on this '80s hatchback example, all the panel gaps look good.

When getting really close, we noticed a very minor parking dent on the nearside door, and a small crack to the rear bumper that has been touched up. Please take a look at the photos for a closer look at the exterior of this car. We didn't spot any corrosion on our visit.

Paint

The deep black gloss looks really good on this XR3i, an excellent choice of colour especially when combined with the red detailing. We did notice a very small scratch on the offside front wing.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in excellent condition across the car, along with the trim.

All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no signs of wear or degrading.

Interior

The interior trimmed with the distinctive and period Monza cloth, an 80's vibe for sure.

Seats and Carpets

The grey cloth seats in this car look in good condition considering the age. The carpets are clean and in great condition too.

As common with these cars, cloth material is sagging around the driver's seat outer bolster, perhaps a bit of attention could rectify this. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed interior tour.

Dashboard

The dashboard looks inline with the rest of the car clean and appears free from cracks or major damage.

Gary reports that all the dials, switches, and gauges are working exactly as you would expect.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel looks in very good original condition. The gearstick tells a similar story, the cabin having a driver-focused layout. Please view all the images of the interior to assess the condition for yourself.

Mechanics

The engineers at Ford have a history of creating sporty versions of their family cars, and get a cult following as a result.

Engine and Gearbox

A 1597cc CVH engine is fitted under the bonnet, the change in the fuel injectors increased the power to 108BHP from 89BHP, definitely part of the appeal in the Escort XR3i.

Suspension and Brakes

The XR3i saw important suspension changes, the front-wheel positive camber was eliminated and revised front struts left the wheels in a vertical stance. They also increased the anti-roll bar diameter and conventional coils were fitted.

Gary reports no issues with the condition of the suspension or brakes and mentions they offer a sporty ride.

The Drive

Gary loves getting the XR3i out for weekend road trips. He mentions the sporty little 1.6L really does go when you work through the gears, it takes him back to his youth.

Electrics and Other

All of the standard electrical fittings are said to be fully functional. The car is fitted with a Ford 2006 RDS cassette radio player.

History and Paperwork

An 80s dream, in coupe form with condition like this, these cars are hard to come by.

In Garys ownership he's kept the car serviced with a local garage CP Autos, and has actioned work on the steering rack and ancillary belts along with servicing. The car comes with MOT history from the 2000s, and letters from the previous owners. Looking at the history, a meeting with the original owner eludes to the mileage reading of ~34,000 not being correct, the condition of the car though shows that it's clearly been cherished over its life.
