Introduction

Less than 28 Sierra 4x4 Ghias are left on the roads - now is the time to invest in a genuinely rare Ford.

Always one to capitalise on an opportunity, Ford originally rolled out their 4WD version of the Sierra in 1985. It fulfilled two tasks within the Sierra line up, one was to replace the XR4i and the other was to develop the use of all-wheel drive as a performance aid. Ford created a further niche by introducing the plush Ghia version a year later, aimed at pushing the model further upmarket while maintaining the Sierra estates load-carrying capacity. A facelifted model soon replaced it and with it came further improvements including a V6 2.9-litre fuel-injected engine. It became a recommended tow car, able to deal with all manners of loads, all undertaken with speed and in comfort.

More to do with their desirability as a donor for performance-oriented Fords, the 4x4 Ghia has become surprisingly rare today. Derek's 1990 example has retained much of its originality which places it as a unique opportunity to obtain a genuinely rare Ford. It has only had 3 owners over its 30 year lifetime, with 22 of those years in the hands of its current owner. A prime candidate for bringing up to scratch.

Meet the owner

The car is perfectly presentable as it is but could be made to look exceptional without too much effort.

Derek has kept and maintained the car since 1998, using it sparingly and keeping it in sound mechanical order.

Bigger engined Sierras are recognised as modern classics and Derek feels it deserves the attention and effort to bring up to a show standard - the car is perfectly presentable as it is, but could be made to look exceptional.

Derek has several other classics, which take up his time and therefore his loyal workhorse has to go.

Exterior

A classy looking wagon, with a huge amount of potential and rarity kudos.

Wheels and Tyres

The alloy wheels show signs of age but are in reasonable condition with no major signs of damage. They would benefit from a refurb but are a good base to start from. The tyres are in legal condition, with a decent amount of life within.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks solid and completely original, the panel fit and gaps are true. There are a series of small dents on the bodywork, but signs of rust are mercifully minimal on the outside of the body although there are minor repair patches on the rear section of the roof and small blemishes on the inner door sills.

The car shows signs of long time storage but has cleaned up comparatively well. Both bumpers have damage and would benefit from restoration. There are signs of corrosion under the rear boot carpet around the spare well well but doesn't appear to be structural from what we can see.

Paint

The black paint appears to be original, with no signs of overspray. It has matted in places, with the expected signs of age throughout e.g. minor cracking around the key fob. There are stone chips on the front of the car too. However, the paint has worn the years relatively well and came up nicely after a little effort.

Glass and Trim

All the trim parts are original and complete, although it would benefit from some renewal, such as bumper and bumper trim. The roof rack sets the car off nicely and is in good condition. The glass is in a typical condition for a car of this age, it has age-related wear but is chip-free and show no significant marks.

Interior

The interior has been well looked after and betrays the car age.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in generally very good order, with a small tear on the driver side bolster and minor marks on the back of the seats. The fabric has worn relatively well.

The carpets are in good condition without evidence of heavy use in the passenger sections. The boot area shows typical wear for an estate car of this age and there is evidence that it has been used to carry pets. The door cards are in good condition, with small marks here and there. The headlining is good, with no major damage although the dog guard brackets have left marks.

Dashboard

The overall condition of the dashboard is excellent, no cracks or sunbleached damage. Wear and tear is at a minimum and has been looked after. All controls are said to be functional by Derek.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is in very good condition, its worn it years well. The gear knob too is in good order, although gear gaiter leather is damaged.

Mechanics

The fastidious yearly service history highlights the engines durability.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up with no hesitation, with no knocking or unwanted tapping noises. It settles down quickly on tick over with no significant amount of exhaust smoke. The engine presentation is good and will clean up nicely after some effort.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension and brakes have been subject to new components in its recent history file, with bushes, calipers and pads subject to renewal. As a result, there shouldn't be any significant issues with the performance of its stopping power or ride.

The Drive

The V6 Sierra was a brisk enough car in its time, but the engine in the 4x4 Ghia was not orientated towards performance but rather delivered a more relaxed power and confidence in traction. It offered good quality at a reasonable price, providing a comfortable and practical cruising car which was more than able to take on adverse weather conditions.

Electrics and Other

Door and glass rubbers are in good condition, with no significant rips or tears.

All external lights are in good condition.

History and Paperwork

Despite its low usage, the Sierra 4x4 has been meticulously serviced.

The car has seen limited use in recent years, covering an average of 500 miles a year over the last 20 years, but has been meticulously serviced with its MOT every year since.

There is plenty of paperwork to suggest that other consumables such as brakes, battery and bushes have been replaced.
