Introduction
Paul Wright
The Escort Cosworth was pretty much the last car to follow the trend of box-arch classics from the late '80s to early '90s era.
The Escort RS Cosworth was first developed at Ford's SVO department in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Loosely based on the fifth-generation Escort, it was substantially modified to incorporate the four-wheel-drive, Cosworth-powered drivetrain from the Sapphire 4x4. By fitting this equipment into a smaller, stiffer Escort hatchback, Ford believed it would have the best chance of winning against Lancia and Toyota in the Group A premier rally category. Now three decades old, the Escort RS Cosworth has aged gracefully. It's a nostalgic machine with avid followers from the golden age of rallying, "Fast Ford" fans, and car enthusiasts alike.
Coming fresh from a large "Fast Ford" collection, this 1993 Escort RS Cosworth "Big Turbo" comes with a comprehensive service history. Finished in the sought after "Mallard Green" paint, and the grey cloth interior that belies the ~111,700 mileage which has gone around the clock, it's clearly an example that has been in the hands of caring enthusiasts. Some minor recommissioning work has been carried out more recently, and it has a fresh MOT, leaving it ready to be enjoyed.
