Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The Escort Cosworth was pretty much the last car to follow the trend of box-arch classics from the late '80s to early '90s era.

The Escort RS Cosworth was first developed at Ford's SVO department in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. Loosely based on the fifth-generation Escort, it was substantially modified to incorporate the four-wheel-drive, Cosworth-powered drivetrain from the Sapphire 4x4. By fitting this equipment into a smaller, stiffer Escort hatchback, Ford believed it would have the best chance of winning against Lancia and Toyota in the Group A premier rally category. Now three decades old, the Escort RS Cosworth has aged gracefully. It's a nostalgic machine with avid followers from the golden age of rallying, "Fast Ford" fans, and car enthusiasts alike.

Coming fresh from a large "Fast Ford" collection, this 1993 Escort RS Cosworth "Big Turbo" comes with a comprehensive service history. Finished in the sought after "Mallard Green" paint, and the grey cloth interior that belies the ~111,700 mileage which has gone around the clock, it's clearly an example that has been in the hands of caring enthusiasts. Some minor recommissioning work has been carried out more recently, and it has a fresh MOT, leaving it ready to be enjoyed.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Dave the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This is the car that started my Fast Ford collection, it's iconic and I consider myself very lucky to have owned more than one.

Dave is absolutely a petrol head, there is no denying that. His choice of cars range from a collection of "Fast Fords" spanning 5 decades, to modern supercars like Lamborghini Aventadors and luxury Rolls-Royces. He is thinning down his collection now, and as the classics get much less use, they are coming to market for the first time in a long time.

This particular car was acquired ~3 years ago, and forms part of a collection that will be coming to market this year. It is a Cosworth which has been used and enjoyed over time, and has been in the hand of enthusiasts that have kept on top of maintenance to leave it in a condition that belies the 100,000+ miles the car has travelled. With the car having been in storage as part of a collection for ~3 years, Dave has had some recommission work carried out, and the car has been given a fresh MOT. Dave will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Wide arches, whale tail – the Escort RS Cosworth has serious road presence.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original five-spoke RS alloy wheels unique to the Escort RS Cosworth, these are in good condition with just the odd minor mark that could easily be refurbished we think. The Yokohama tyres have plenty of tread remaining too.

Please see the image gallery for detailed shots.

image

Bodywork

Walking around the car, the panel gaps appear to be matching on each door, bonnet and boot. There are a couple of very hard-to-notice dings on the nearside door and rear quarter, these are difficult to spot really.

We didn't spot any obvious corrosion on the car that you might expect given the mileage, this is likely due to the restoration work that was carried out in the 2000's, you can see pictures of the car stripped etc in the history and paperwork section. High-resolution images and videos have been provided, so please review all media to assess the car’s condition thoroughly.

image

Paint

Finished in the original colour of "Mallard Green", the Escort RS Cosworth was repainted several years ago — photographs can be seen in the History and Paperwork section. The paint presents very well, with no obvious chips or scratches.

Images are taken from multiple angles to give you a realistic impression of the car, just as if you were standing beside it. Please take the time to examine these high-resolution images and videos to assess the condition for yourself.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good condition and free from any noticeable scratches. The window seals and trims are also in good order with no perishing.

The lower front spoiler has a few minor age-related marks on it and indentations as pictured. Other than that, all the trim is in excellent condition, including the whale tail spoiler.

image

Interior

Large bolstered Recaro sports seats give a sense of security, holding you tightly in this 90s icon.

Seats and Carpets

The Recaro seats are in very good condition for their age and mileage. They are usually seen with worn bolsters, on this car they look pretty good, just some wear to the piping in the main. The rear seats are excellent, as are both door cards, which have no damage.

Inside, the boot is also clean and tidy, and the spare wheel is in place.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard features a Cosworth badge and the additional instruments across the top to show boost etc, keeping an eye on the essentials.

No damage is present to the dashboard, and all of the instruments are working correctly. The odometer is a 5 figure dial, you'll see from the history that it has "gone around", hence the ~111,700 mileage mentioned.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

With no signs of excessive wear, the steering wheel is in good order, as is the factory five-speed gear knob.

Please refer to the interior gallery for more images.

Mechanics

The more desirable “blue top” engine produces approximately ~227 bhp and ~224 lb-ft of torque.

Engine and Gearbox

The “blue top” Cosworth 2.0-litre engine is an early one and known as the "Big Turbo" equipped with a Garrett T3/T04B turbocharger. It fires up without hesitation. Recently, a new crankshaft sensor has been fitted, and the car now runs with no issues reported.

On the road, the car goes through the gears without any issues, watch the video to see and hear the car in action.

image

Suspension and Brakes

On the road, the car handles superbly and feels well planted thanks to the four-wheel-drive setup.

No knocks or bangs were heard coming from any corner of the car, and it comes to a stop in a straight line with no juddering through the pedal.

image

The Drive

Bringing together raw rally-bred performance with old-school charm. The turbocharged 2.0-litre engine delivers punchy performance, channelled through an all-wheel-drive system that offers excellent grip and confidence on twisty roads or loose surfaces. The turbo lag is noticeable but adds to the drama, and once it spools up, the car surges forward with real urgency.

The steering is direct, the chassis communicative, and the signature whale-tail spoiler in your rear-view is a constant reminder you’re piloting a true homologation special.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be working correctly and shows no signs of excessive wear to the buttons. The car is believed to have been optioned with AC from new, you'll see mention of this in some of paperwork.

The head unit has been upgraded to a Kenwood KDC-3027 CD player.

History and Paperwork

An early Big Turbo car, presented beautifully in a sought after colour and coming to market from ~3 years in a Fast Ford collection, it has a comprehensive history file shows regular servicing and thousands spent over the years.

The history file for this Escort RS Cosworth is comprehensive, to say the least. There are many invoices present detailing the thousands spent over the years before the car was placed into the collection. The owner's manuals are in place, along with a stamped service book helping to verify the mileage (~111,700) and services carried out.

To say the Escort RS Cosworth is desirable is probably an understatement. They are, as you know, up there with some of the most revered RS Fords ever produced — so when one becomes available, it’s a fantastic opportunity for any Ford fan or indeed any hot hatch enthusiast.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, relax, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win – just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
