Introduction

Isaac Wass
Professional Conisgnor

The Ford Racing Puma was not only the last production Ford car to be part hand assembled, but also the beginning of an era of beloved 'Fast Fords' that would soon wear the iconic ‘ST’ name badge.

The Ford Racing Puma was a limited edition car, with only 500 units ever being built. Beginning life as a standard 1.7L Ford Puma engineered and assembled in Germany, they were then shipped over the UK where they were stripped down and rebuilt by Tickfords, to create the 155bhp Racing Puma we know and love.

These modifications included wider track both front and rear, Alcon 4 pot racing brakes front and rear, lightweight wheels, stiffer suspension, a more free flowing exhaust, and finally some light engine work to elicit 155bhp from the naturally aspirated 1.7L engine.

Suspected to be fewer than 300 left on the road, this particular example is production No.207 and comes to market from current owner Trevor, with recent major works including cambelt, water pump, and a major engine and gearbox service.

This listing was written from information supplied by Isaac after meeting Trevor the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I spent a long time looking for a Racing Puma and this was by far the best example I could find at the time.

Trevor was in the market for a Ford Racing Puma for quite some time before coming across this particular car, and having been to view many examples that were either rotten, mechanically unsound, or otherwise in poor condition, he eventually found this one for sale by an enthusiast who had owned the car for quite some time.

Trevor told us that he had to pass a test just to be given a chance to view the car - not something you usually expect to hear when looking to buy a car! After getting the seal of approval form the previous owner, Trevor could see why he had been so particular in viewings of the car, with this being by far the best example he had found in his search. Free of rot and demonstrating all the desirable factors expected of a Racing Puma, he knew he had found a winner and soon the deal was done and Trevor was the proud new owner of Ford Racing Puma No.207.

Having owned the car a little over two years Trevor has had no issues with the vehicle and has had a major service and plenty of big service jobs carried out just last year, however suffering with a shoulder injury Trevor has found himself less and less able to drive the car, and has decided now is the time to find a new owner.

Exterior

With its widened track, front splitter, and MIM Speedline wheels, the Ford Racing Puma is painted in the striking Imperial Blue that later became the iconic colour of the Ford Focus RS Mk1.

Wheels and Tyres

The MIM Speedline wheels are in good condition, with no major damage or curb marks to be seen anywhere on the wheels.

The wheels are wrapped in grippy softer compound TOYO Proxes T1R tyres, DOT marked 2005 - of course these are fairly old now but they are still in good visual condition nonetheless, free of any sidewall damage or perishing and with plenty of tread left across the board.

Bodywork

The Ford Racing Puma features wide arched wings and quarters and these were double skinned by Tickford during the build process and often begin to corrode and eventually rot through, of which there is no evidence present on this example.

All bodylines are as they should be and all panel gaps are even across the car too. We did spot a very small ding to the passenger side rear quarter, however the paint is unbroken and it is likely that a paintless dent repair technician could repair this with moderate ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The Imperial Blue paintwork is in good condition and is free of any major stone chips, scuffs, or scratches. There is documentation to support a full body respray in 2010 and this looks to have been carried out to a good standard with very little texture in the paintwork and no evident overspray, except for of course the all important Tickford overspray on the crash bar in the engine bay - widely known as good indicator that the front end has not been damaged since the car was built.

Glass and Trim

The glass on the car looks to be in good condition, with no evident cracks, chips, or scratch present around the car. Likewise the surrounding trim is in good condition, with no perishing of rubber seals or other such damage to be seen.

Interior

The black and blue Alcantara steering wheel and matching interior trim is very much on theme for the Racing Puma, including the blue Sparco bucket seats that evoke a feeling of track day fun, in even the most modest of drivers.

Seats and Carpets

The blue Sparco bucket seats are in excellent condition, with no major wear or any ripping or splitting to the bolsters.

The carpets are in equally good condition, with original Ford Puma floor mats protecting the carpets, and a second set of aftermarket floor mats protecting the original floor mats.

Dashboard

The dashboard is a simple design, reminiscent of all fords of that era, with its flowing shape and moulded design offering little distraction for the driver.

The dashboard itself is in good condition with no signs of damage and still retains its original airbag stickers from the factory.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black and blue Alcantara steering wheel is in fantastic condition for the age and mileage of the car, partly in thanks to the owners choice to keep the steering wheel protected with a leather cover. Likewise the gear stick is also in good condition, the aluminium gear knob being free of major damage could, at most, benefit from a good polish.

Mechanics

Powered by a 1.7L naturally aspirated engine producing 155bhp and benefitting from Alcon 4 pot racing brakes, the Ford Racing Puma is a devilishly fun car with go-kart handling and stopping power.

Engine and Gearbox

The 1.7L Yamaha fettled engine relies on old school breathing modifications to produce the 155bhp it delivers, making for a well rounded and naturally aspirated engine that provides excellently linear acceleration. During our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car start from cold on the first turn of the key, with no smoke and a well balanced idle. Likewise during our ‘On The Road’ video you can see the car perform faultlessly in the hands of owner Trevor.

The gearbox is a 5-speed manual box, with lovely snappy gear changes despite the relatively long throw.

During our time with the car we noticed no ungainly noises from the gearbox either, thanks in part to the gearbox service and clutch work carried out last year.

Suspension and Brakes

The stiffened suspension of the Ford Racing Puma is unforgiving but not unusable, while providing excellent cornering ability it is far from uncomfortable. We noticed no issues with the suspension on the day, noting that it performed faultlessly under load and provided modest levels of comfort for the passengers too.

The Alcon 4 pot braking system is an impressive affair, capable of providing 1G of stopping power and purportedly capable of out-braking the Porsche 911 of its time. These look to be in good condition, with no major lipping or corrosion of the discs or hubs, and no untoward noises to be heard from any of the corners on the day.

The Drive

Ford spent almost their entire budget on handling performance when designing the Racing Puma, ultimately leading to the high ticket price and low production numbers, however when you drive the Racing Puma now, you can see that every penny of that budget was spent wisely as the Racing Puma is without doubt one of the best handling cars from the turn of the century, with incredible steering angle, unbelievable road feel, and cornering ability second to none.

The stiffness of the chassis combines with the 90mm wider track to provide a low slung mini sports car capable of taking 90 degree corners with ease at flat foot speeds.

Electrics and Other

During our time with the car we noticed no electrical faults, with all lights both interior and exterior working as they should. All dashboard lights turned off upon starting as expected, and all switchgear and gauges working correctly too.

History and Paperwork

With only 500 ever produced and an estimated figure of fewer than 300 remaining on the road, the Ford Racing Puma is a rare find and this particular example comes to market well presented and ready to be driven.

This well presented example of the Ford Racing Puma was first registered on 14.07.2000 and has had 9 previous owners, with current owner Trevor having owned the car since 2021. Coming to market with ~89,600 miles with an invoice for over £1,000 in October of last year to include cambelt, as well as major engine and gearbox service amongst other ancillary items.

Free of any bodywork issues and still sporting the highly desirable golden ticket features such as the classic Tickford crash bar overspray and Tickford branded number plates, this is a true enthusiasts' example that is ready to be owned, driven, and enjoyed.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in high resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hello Trevor. I would like to ask you some questions about your Puma please. 1) How many owners has it had ? 2) Has it ever been involved in any accidents ? 3) If you were to keep it for another year, what would you spend money on it next ? Thank you for your answers in advance. Kind regards Mark
