The S2000 followed in the proud tradition of the Honda “S” roadsters, such as the S600 and S800, where a small coupe body is mated to a high revving performance engine.

The S2000 was first hinted at by the SSM (Sport Study Model) Honda concept car of 1995’s Tokyo Motor Show. Unusually, for concept cars, the S2000 that appeared in 1999, to coincide with Honda’s 50th anniversary, remained impressively faithful to the SSM. It had lost a cylinder in the process, however. The SSM was a five-cylinder car.

Built between 1999 and 2009, the S2000 was built across just two phases. This stunning yellow example is from the first production phase, the AP1. The S2000’s initial claim to automotive fame was its 124bhp per litre, specific power output. In 1999 that put it at the top of the tree in terms of naturally aspirated cars and thus it remained for a full 10 years until Ferrari began production of the 458 Italia in 2010.

The technical tour-de-force that is the 1,997 cc inline four-cylinder DOHC-VTEC F20C engine, remains an eye-opener even 22 years on from its introduction. Peak power of around 240bhp arrives at a spine tingling 8,600 rpm, 400 rpm ahead of the redline. It is no surprise, then, that the F20C engine won International Engine of the Year for 1.8 to 2.2-liter engines five times in its lifetime.

The bright yellow and black colour-scheme and the immense usability of this car, despite its huge performance potential, made it a very beguiling proposition.

Marcia bought her S2000 in 2007 and has been enamoured of its combination of charms ever since. She admits it has been gently used in her ownership (see the On the Road video) and is sure that it hasn’t strayed into the VTEC actuation zone, at around 6,000 rpm, during her ownership.

Exterior

The combination of bright “Spa Yellow” paintwork with “Berlina Black” wheels and black hood makes for a very striking car indeed.

Wheels and Tyres

The 16-inch Honda five-spoke alloys have been the subject of a professional refurbishment and finished in gloss Berlina black with the silver Honda centre caps. They present very well indeed.

The Falken Z1EX ZE310 tyres are a recent addition and as such all appear to be in good condition with a generous amount of tread remaining in all cases.

Bodywork

During our visit the bodywork highlighted no major areas of concern with the panels looks very straight and true.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the bodywork condition for yourselves.

Paint

The Spa Yellow paint is deep and lustrous and gleams brightly in sunny conditions.

As you will see from the photographic package there is an area around the nearside rear wheel arch that has bubbled slightly and some surface corrosion around the extremities of the wheel arch / lip of front bonnet. Also, being picky, we did notice a very slight colour different on the top of the NSF wing. These should be an easy repair for a new owner if they require it as it is only evident upon close inspection.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The glass appears to be in excellent unchipped condition - we noticed no areas of distortion or discolouration.

Interior

The black, leather-clad interior is in fine, unripped and unmarked condition - its sporty demeanor is entirely in keeping with the personality of this Japanese sports-car legend.

Seats and Carpets

The well-padded and deeply bolstered sports seats appear in good condition. The padded, integral headrests with netted centres are both individual and reminiscent of other iconic sports cars.

Carpets appear in good condition too, unfaded and have been protected by thick, carpet mats during Marcia’s ownership.

Dashboard

The digital dash would have been positively space-age back at launch in 1999. It has stood the test of time very well and still appears quite modern and unusual. The 9,000 rpm red line is, of course, hard to ignore and everything seemed to work as expected during our on the road session.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Honda are well practiced in the art of making all the cabin touch points feel sporting and premium in equal measure. The wheel and gearstick in this S2000 are no exception and the leather clad touch-points present exceptionally well.

Mechanics

The F20C engine in the S2000 is a bit of a JDM VTEC legend and it is soon evident why - a worthy four time winner of International Engine of the Year.

Engine and Gearbox

During our brief trip in the car all mechanical systems worked as expected and belied the age of the car. The engine revs smoothly and the VTEC system appears to activate smartly and impressively beyond 6,000 rpm.

The six speed gearbox is a slick and pleasingly mechanical affair and all gears seemed to engage smoothly and decisively.

Suspension and Brakes

The brakes and suspension of the car appear to combine effortlessly to create a sporty yet compliant ride.

The Drive

Driving and being a passenger in the S2000 is always a memorable experience thanks to the finely engineered drive train combination of this well-regarded sports car.

As you will see from our on the road video, Marcia's relative takes the car out for a drive and you'll hear it go into the VTEC zone too - all worked perfectly.

Electrics and Other

All electrics appeared to be working as expected and Marcia attests to their efficiency and reliability.
