Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The first of its genre, the Jaguar MK1 is an elegant and brisk family sports saloon.

First launched in 1956, the MK1 defined the modern family performance car. It featured a revolutionary unitary body and an advanced suspension system mated to a range of potent engines. Famous for its handling and stability, the MK1 also offered a lavish interior experience, borrowing the leather-and-veneer luxury typically reserved for Jaguar’s high-end sports models.

Defined by its iconic silhouette, featuring rear-wheel spats, slim windows, and a curvaceous tail, the MK1 served as the predecessor to the MK2. However, this exceptional 1956 model, modified by a lifelong Jaguar aficionado, holds its own against its more famous successor, offering a charm that many may find rather appealing.

Coming to market from ~10 years with our vendor and presented in striking 'Clarendon Blue' over a grey leather interior, this robust and well-maintained MK1 boasts an impressive history. While it underwent an undocumented restoration in the past, its true value lies in the £50,000+ invested in comprehensive renovations since 2017.

Fitted with a fully rebuilt 3.4-litre XK engine paired with a smooth Toyota 5-speed manual gearbox, it also has renewed suspension and the addition of front disc brakes for improved safety and handling. Also having a beautifully restored cabin that retains its classic Jaguar charm, it also offers several practical modern upgrades.

This magazine featured car also comes with 12 months MOT, its official Heritage Certificate, and three sets of keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Glenn the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

A joy to drive, with plenty of usability, the MK1 is practical and supremely comfy.

As a dedicated member of the Classic Jaguar community, Glenn drove this car frequently, investing significant effort into perfecting its mechanical performance and road manners.

Far from being a just a 'show queen' this MK1 is a regular sight at shows; its reliability and comfort were recently underscored by a seamless round trip between London and Manchester.

During Glenn's ownership it is always kept in a secure garage, the car is now being offered for sale simply because it is no longer being used as often as it deserves.

Glenn will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Solid and cleanly presented, the car is well worthy of show standards.

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels are smartly presented, with decent hubs and chrome rings.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon tyres, showing a spec of 6.40-15 - they do not show any date coding, but Glenn has documented them as 2017 purchases. They are all in good shape with visually even tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior shows no panel damage, providing a positive fit. All doors open and close with ease, although the passenger front door needs a little effort to close completely. The shut lines are consistent.

There are no visual issues noted on the chassis rails, floor pan, engine bay, boot floor or front wheel wells. The rear jacking points show mild signs of age, but given the age of the car, the Jaguar is remarkably solid underneath.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Cosmetic work was carried out on the car 2019. The 'Clarendon Blue' paint finish has a positive lustre and a consistent finish. There are a few minor marks and blemishes on the surface of the paint, but nothing that distracts.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in decent order, with good seals. The lights and lenses are in good condition; some of the seals show minor signs of age.

The brightwork is complete, having been rechromed in 2019. There are minor signs of age spotted on the windscreen finisher and one of the door trims.

The bumpers are well-mounted and in good shape.

image

Interior

An extensive interior overhaul includes renewed seating, dashboard refurbishments, and new carpeting.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats have been re-covered, and the rear were reconnolised in 2017 - they all present positively.

A full carpet set was fitted in 2020, and all are clean and free of dampness.

image

Dashboard

As part of the 2020 interior refit, the veneer dashboard underwent a restoration, which includes a rebuilt and recalibrated ammeter and speedometer. The facia, controls and dials are in good order and all function as they should.

The door cards, headlining and interior trim are in good condition, with just a loose-fitting section noted inside the offside C-Pillar.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is tidy, and a walnut gearknob completes the smartly finished interior.

image

Mechanics

Subject to an extensive engine rebuild and new gearbox, almost every aspect of the car's mechanics has seen attention.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts up easily with the choke, it idles evenly with no untoward noises, and on the day we didn’t see any evidence of fluid leaks. The car puffed out a small amount of exhaust smoke on start-up, but it was free of splutters or uneven running. All of the ignition lights remained off.

The 3.4-litre engine was subject to a £9.7K rebuild in 2017, followed by further work in 2021, including new exhaust manifolds, replaced core plugs, throttle linkages and a new sump gasket. The car has also been fitted with an electric choke, 123 electronic distributor, an alternator with negative earth, an electric fan and a new radiator. The engine presents cleanly, with decent hoses and ancillaries, all suggesting careful maintenance.

A stainless steel exhaust was fitted in 2018 and a 5-Speed Toyota Supra Gearbox, mounts and prop shaft were fitted in 2017, and as a result, add a genuinely pleasurable aspect to the driving experience. The clutch operates without issue, and a new clutch master cylinder was fitted in 2021.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The car rides evenly and smoothly with no negative feedback or unwanted noises heard. The car was fitted with new rear shocks in 2017 and new front springs and shocks in 2020. Anti-roll bars and front subframe mounts were fitted in 2018.

The brakes function without fault, stopping the car confidently and it has a front disc brake conversion.

image

The Drive

While the car was originally equipped with a 2.4-litre engine, it has since been upgraded to a later 3.4-litre unit, further enhancing the spirited performance of this refined sports saloon. The car performed flawlessly during our 20-minute drive; across both urban streets and faster roads, it delivered a composed and responsive feel that inspires total confidence.

The engine pulls well with no hesitancy, coming up to temperature without any problems. The engine released a minor misfire, but as it warmed up and progressed, it remained hiccup-free, and we didn’t hear it again. The steering was demonstrated to operate without fault, and the power steering unit made its manoeuvrability pleasurable and free of play or unwanted noises.

The car travels smoothly and is remarkably quiet, partly due to the soundproofing kit and the rigidity of the body. The suspension absorbed the roads without any problems. The car accelerates evenly and corners without any drama.

Glenn has not reported any issues with the engine temperature of the car; it has had extensive work to the radiator, a re-cored heater matrix and has an electric cooling fan with a manual control for any potential traffic hold-ups. He's satisfied with its oil pressure.

image

Electrics and Other

The car has rear seat belts installed, LED headlamps, an electric screen washer, a DAB radio fitted with front and rear speakers and USB connections. While we didn't test all electrics during our visit, Glenn told us everything was functioning to his knowledge.

While the car is fitted with a Toyota gearbox, the original will be supplied as part of the sale. The full-length sunroof is in excellent condition and operates as it should. It offers a good seal with no evidence of water ingress.

History and Paperwork

With over ~£50,000 worth of spending since 2017, the owner has made an impressive commitment to improving this MK1.

First registered as a home market car in September 1956, it was originally supplied by Glovers of Ripon in Harrogate. It has had just 6 keepers since then, having appeared in a classic car magazine article in 2014. Since obtaining the car in 2016, Glenn, a senior member of the Jaguar Enthusiast Club, has spent over £50,000 since 2017 transforming it into a reliable and usable proposition.

Much of the work carried out is outlined in the relevant sections above; the engine work was completed by Fenn Motor Works, and Realm Engineering carried out the gearbox conversion. Around £20,000 was spent in the Jag Shop Workshop, which includes a refurbished air filter system, new front springs, additional engine work, re-veneered dashboard, radiator, a carburettor rebuild, power steering installation, rear shocks and numerous replacement parts to the running gear and interior.

Along with the folder of invoices, the car comes with a batch of previous MOT certificates. Glenn has taken the wise precaution of issuing the car with an MOT which has a year's ticket. It comes with three sets of keys, and Glenn will also include a large box of spares, including the original gearbox.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

The text mentions the front passenger door being difficult to close and the door appears to sit proud (particularly the rear lower edge) in the pictures. Have you attempted to rectify this and/or do you know the cause ? Thanks

Hello, which power steering kit is fitted ? Also the MOT mileage goes down in 2019 and 2024 was this an error at the MOT station ? Thanks Mike

Hi, the car looks very interesting.
How has the gearing worked out, what’s the mph/1000rpm in 5th?
Small puff of exhasut smoke on starting, assume nothing significant?
Any oil leaks?
Webasto type sunroof, assume it’s watertight, is there much wind noise when closed at motorway speeds?
Many thanks,
Keith
