Introduction

Alan Stuart
Professional Consigner

Few classic saloons possess the presence of the Jaguar Mk2. Its graceful curves, unmistakable chrome grille, and sporting proportions made it one of the defining British cars of the 1960s.

This 1961 Jaguar Mk2 3.4 has been cherished by its current owner, Mark, for more than two decades. Finished in an elegant shade of grey over a beautifully presented red leather interior, it remains a wonderfully usable classic that has clearly been maintained with enjoyment in mind. Benefitting from a reconditioned gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes, stainless steel exhaust, and careful garage storage, this is a handsome example that drives every bit as well as it looks.

This listing was written from information supplied by Alan after meeting Mark the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've owned this Jaguar since 2003 and it's been a pleasure to have. It's one of those cars that always feels special whenever it comes out of the garage. It drives beautifully, sounds fantastic and never fails to attract attention wherever it goes.

Mark has cared for this Mk2 for over twenty years, and it shows throughout the car. Rather than being a neglected classic, it has spent its life stored under cover and maintained as something to be enjoyed on the right occasions.

Selling is a decision that hasn't come easily, but with the Jaguar seeing less use than it deserves, he feels it's time for a new custodian to continue its story.

Mark will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below.

Exterior

The Jaguar presents exactly as a Mk2 should, combining elegant styling with an honest, well-kept appearance that reflects decades of careful ownership.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wire wheels remain in excellent condition and suit the car perfectly, providing one of the Mk2's most recognisable features. They present well with a bright finish.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork is straight and retains crisp panel lines throughout.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in an elegant metallic grey, the paintwork has retained an impressive depth of shine. It remains a very smart example that is more than capable of turning heads, while the few age-related marks simply reinforce that this is a classic that has been enjoyed rather than hidden away.

There are a handful of minor blemishes, including a light scratch on the driver's door and the occasional small paint bubble, though none detract from the car's overall appearance.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

Chrome trim is one of the Mk2's defining features, and this example wears it well.

The brightwork, bumpers, grille, and iconic leaping Jaguar mascot all present nicely, while the glass appears to be in equally good order and completes the car's distinguished appearance.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

Open the door and you're welcomed by a beautifully presented cabin that perfectly captures the charm of a 1960s Jaguar luxury saloon.

Seats and Carpets

The striking red leather interior remains in very good condition, with the seats retaining their shape and presenting well throughout.

The cabin has also benefited from being re-carpeted, offering a fresh appearance that nonetheless remains sympathetic to the car's period character.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The walnut dashboard is undoubtedly one of the highlights of the cabin. The veneer retains a deep, rich finish and provides a wonderful contrast against the red leather upholstery.

Original Smiths instrumentation remains neatly presented and contributes to the authentic driving experience.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The classic Jaguar steering wheel sits proudly ahead of the driver in great condition.

Switchgear, controls and the automatic selector all appear well presented, maintaining the period feel that makes these cars so enjoyable to drive.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically, this Mk2 proved to be an impressive and reassuring car during our time with it; driving with the smoothness and refinement expected from Jaguar's legendary XK-powered saloon.

Engine and Gearbox

Power comes from the renowned 3.4-litre XK straight-six, which starts willingly and settles into a smooth idle.

The car has benefited from a reconditioned automatic gearbox, which selects gears cleanly. The addition of overdrive makes longer journeys even more relaxed.

Completing the package is a stainless steel exhaust that provides a subtle but satisfying soundtrack.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a Mk2, offering a composed and comfortable ride without unwanted knocks or rattles.

Disc brakes at all four corners provide confident stopping power and inspire confidence behind the wheel.

image

The Drive

Out on the road, this Jaguar feels every inch the refined grand tourer. The engine pulls strongly, the gearbox operates smoothly, and the car cruises effortlessly.

During our drive there were no concerning noises, knocks, or vibrations, and the car tracked nicely throughout.

Overall, it is a genuinely enjoyable classic that feels ready to be driven and appreciated.

image

Electrics and Other

The car appears to have been well maintained over the years, with the engine bay presenting honestly and benefiting from sensible upgrades where appropriate.

All electrics and dials were confirmed to be in full working order from Mark, the owner.

Being garage stored throughout Mark's ownership has undoubtedly helped preserve its overall condition.

History and Paperwork

Having remained with its current owner for over twenty years, this Jaguar comes with the reassuring provenance expected of a cherished, enthusiast-owned classic.

The car was imported before being purchased by Mark in 2003 and has clearly been looked after throughout his ownership.

Alongside its long-term care, it benefits from several worthwhile improvements, including a reconditioned gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes, stainless steel exhaust, and a re-carpeted interior. Taken as a whole, this is an honest, usable, and well-maintained Mk2 that's ready for its next owner to enjoy.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
