Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer.

Manual gearbox, overdrive system and a 3.4L engine -grace, space and pace is everything that this Jag is about.

One of the most iconic car shapes of the 1960s, the Jaguar Mk2 is an instantly recognisable model with its rounded bodywork and shapely curves. Manufactured in Coventry between 1959 and 1967, the mid sized sports saloon was fast and capable of delivering great performance with this particular version flexing its 3.4L muscles from 1964. The Mk2 model benefitted from an 18% increase in the cabin glass area from its predecessor as well as a change to the radiator grille, larger sides and repositioned tail and fog lamps. A change to the instrument layout became Jaguar standard from the Mk2 onwards all the way through to the XJ series in the early '70s. A true classic for all the right reasons.

Previous owners have lavished extra care and attention on the Jaguar, notably, a full engine rebuild has been actioned along with carburettor upgrades, new battery, updated gearbox, overdrive system, upgraded axle and the addition of a new stainless steel exhaust system. With ~9,633 showing on the clock since the engine rebuild, this Jaguar Mk2 is a really fine example of a classic piece of British automotive engineering and ready for its future owner to love and enjoy.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It's a truly special car - No matter where you take it, everyone looks at it and smiles.

Paul and his wife Lisa are both big fans of this particular model of Jag and love the TV series 'Inspector Morse' - where the Mk2 is an instantly recognisable car in the show. The previous owners adapted the roof colour to match the same colour-way from the TV series which shows as a lovely contrast against the Maroon paint work. "We purchased the car 'ready to drive' and were pleased to see that no extra work was required. The previous owners had completed all the added work to the car before we purchased it, which meant we could enjoy the car straight away. The Jag really caught our eye and as it ticked all the boxes for us - we decided it was the car for us".

"The shape of the car is so beautiful and a real head turner wherever it goes, for an older car its great at keeping up with modern traffic and people always comment about how nice it looks. It's such a comfortable ride with an inviting, welcoming interior - you really feel that when you drive it".

"We have 2 other cars which we're currently restoring which have deep sentimental value to us, we need to make some much needed space in the garage, and reluctantly, this means we don't have as much time for the Jaguar or to enjoy driving it as we used to". Paul and Lisa will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments area below.

Exterior

Finished in a glorious Maroon colour way with contrasting black roof - the Mk2 is a timeless classic beautifully complimented by its chrome styling elements.

Wheels and Tyres

The Mk2 sits on a nice set of upgraded MWS Dunlop multi spoke wire wheels, kept in a lovely condition they really compliment the car well especially with the branded Jaguar locking caps.

Fitted with Goodyear on the front and Forceum tyres on the back - the tyre age shows 2011 to the front and 2006 on the rears. Both sets are showing with a good amount of tread still on these but be advised that the rear offside tyre was noted as an advisory on the recent MOT. The advisory noted signs of slight damaging / cracking or perishing between primary groves, so this will be worth replacing in the near future.

Take a look over the exterior gallery section for a close up view of the wheels and tyres on the Jag.

Bodywork

The bodywork across the car looks straight and shut lines close nicely with a satisfying clunk when closing the doors; front and back.

We did note some signs of small areas of corrosion, e.g. the rear arches but nothing too serious.

Having been dry stored in the garage over recent years the car has kept its shape well benefitting from the extra care given to it.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the gallery section for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Coated in a good depth of paint there was little signs of chipping across the panelling, paint coverage looked good across the car and showed a lovely lustre in the light when we took the Mk2 out on the road.

We noted some signs of paint bubbling across the typical areas of the car that we see often in older Jaguar's, namely at the base of the door panel and there was some blistering when looking in close detail over the boot area surface. We were being fairly picky when looking over the car, but given that the car is approaching 60 years old, the paint shows in a really respectable condition.

The roof has been painted in a classy black which offsets the red nicely and adds a smart contrast to the colour-way.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass areas showed well when taking in the exterior of the vehicle, looking clear and showing no major marks the windscreen caused us no issues when on the road. Seals and sills looked good overall with the rear bumper looking fresh along with the rear light casing. The front bumper reflected the same condition as the rear, and the sections around the grill and front lights looked to be in a really great condition.

A stainless steel exhaust system was added by a previous owner which shows really well on the cars exterior. A great upgrade which makes such a difference to the overall appearance of the Mk2.

There're some signs of pitting along the window trim and side of window chrome areas, however, given that these are likely original elements of the car they appear to have aged well over the years.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a smart looking car the Mk2 really is.

Interior

Finished in a glorious red leather with matched red carpets, the cabin area looks in every way to be a real classic interior.

Seats and Carpets

Large supportive seats greet the driver and passengers when stepping into the cabin space. Roomy and inviting, the interior is comforting and welcoming with the refurbished red leathers looking really smart.

The sections surrounding the door cards and all the way down to the carpet area shows in a great condition, wood panelling looks nice across the door card sections also.

Checking underneath the carpet showed the car has really benefitted from being garaged over the past few years. Dry throughout we noted no issues that caused us any concern.

Dashboard

Beautiful wood panelling sits proudly in the dash area. The dashboard overall shows well - we noted the top of the dash showed some signs of ageing but was reflective of the age of the car itself.

Displays and dials again showed a little sign of age, but didn't effect the drivers ability to focus on the readouts.

Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the Jag's dashboard, head over and see the cars interior in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Simple and practical, the steering setup is a no-nonsense approach with its black wheel and chromed steering support.

The Jaguar badge front and centre shows a little cracking but is reflective of the cars age having not been refurbished. The original elements don't look out of place at all here adding to the charisma of the Jag's interior.

Mechanics

Boasting a full rebuild, the 3.4L engine with its upgraded gearbox and overdrive system sings nicely when out on the road.

Engine and Gearbox

This is a Mk2 that has had a lot of work done to it by its previous owners - keeping it in great mechanical shape. The engine bay is nice and clean - it drives well through the gears with a working overdrive and lovely Jaguar soundtrack.

Take a look at our 'On the road' video where we see the Jag fire up from a cold start and see the car out and about. We take the Mk2 onto some local roads to get a better feel for what this car is all about.

Suspension and Brakes

Whilst out on our road we took the car onto some local roads; we noted no knocks, or unwanted noises from the suspension and the braking showed no sign of pulling or strain.

Coopercraft callipers have been added by a previous owner showing that a thoughtful approach has been put towards the future of the vehicle, and not just the cosmetic elements that have benefitted from the restoration.

The Drive

The 3.4L straight six engine does everything it needs to and delivers a great ride for its passengers.

A comfortable Jaguar ride is a key part of any Jag ownership and this Mk2 doesn't let you down. With nothing untoward noted whilst out on the drive the beautiful Maroon saloon is a guaranteed head turner whilst out and about.

Electrics and Other

With a working stereo and dials noted as functional when firing up from cold, Paul lets us know that everything within the interior is working as it should.

If any further questions are needed about the electronic functions within the car Paul would be happy to answer these in the comments section at the base of the listing.

History and Paperwork

An engine build ~9,600 miles ago, desirable 3.4L engine with manual and overdrive gearbox and some welcome upgrades like 123-ignition make this Mk2 a beautiful classic you can use and enjoy.

Having had several upgrades and extra care and attention lavished on the Jaguar from previous owners, this Mk2 Jag shows in a lovely condition inside and out and presents really well. A professional unleaded full engine rebuild, gearbox updates, overdrive system, upgraded axle and stainless steel exhaust addition as well as Coopercraft brakes, MWS Dunlop wire wheels and a new interior have brought this Jag back to its original glory.

Just over ~9,600 miles on the clock show since the engine rebuild in 2008 and in the last 2 years a full carburretor rebuild has been actioned, new rubber coolant hoses added, as well as 123-ignition, tune+, electronic bluetooth distributor, new Bosch coil, new battery, new outer steering arms and joints, speedo service and complete overhaul of the windscreen wiper system. The car is also complete with a machined aluminium Lionel Roberts spinner tool and Classic Additions ultimate outdoor car cover.

Inspired by the Inspector Morse colourway the Regency Red paintwork is matched with a black roof which is a real head turner when out on the road.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

Good evening Paul and Lisa. You have a very impressing Mk2. Could you confirm whether there is power steering please? Also there appears to be some bubbling along the edge of the inner front nearside wing. It may be the photograph/video. Could you comment please?
Best wishes.
Chris
