Introduction

Adam
CEO

Fancy a right-hand-drive MKII 3.8 with that all important manual gearbox and overdrive, of course you do - well what about if you could buy one of the hottest property classic Jaguars within our guide that is ready to go with no big restoration required!

A star of the track, road and silver screen, the MK2 is a genuinely classy affair with charismatic style and grace. Supported by a vast supply of parts and clubs, these cars make the perfect classic for many enthusiasts. Considered the most desirable version and the right colour and trim, this head-turning example with the iconic and spirited XK 3.8-litre engine has become one of the most desirable family cars of the sixties.

This example is an original right-hand-drive car that spent some time in South Africa, Germany and Canada before finding its way back home. The car is fresh from its last owner that quite obviously loved the car over his thirty years of ownership. It was subject to a restoration around the time he purchased it and has stood the test of time.

The car looks great on our visit and you can see that it has been cherished by the previous owner. With prices of 3.8s remaining strong this year (see Market View), then at the low reserve that's been set on this car it could make an affordable entry into the 3.8 club - don't miss your chance.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Adam after meeting Paul the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I have a knack for finding genuine cars from very long ownerships - this is no exception as it was owed for over 30 years!

We've known Paul for many years now and we have been fortunate to help him find new owners for some very exceptional and rare cars.

Paul worked for Jaguar Cars / Jaguar Land Rover as an Engineering Manager for over thirty years. His career took him through core Engineering Design to Special Vehicles and latterly Jaguar Heritage / Jaguar Classic where one of his achievements was the technical strategy and planning for the recent ‘E Type Reborn’ Programme.

Paul retired from JLR a few years ago in order to peruse his own passion within the classic car business; of course, specialising in Jaguars. So Heritage Classics Ltd was born and Paul now sources and works on Jaguars and other exotics every day.

Of course Paul is very well connected in the Jaguar world and has been finding some exceptional classics from long term ownerships - this one has been loved for over thirty years by one man that was devoted to the car.

Exterior

A really presentable exterior that's finished in white and compliments the red interior beautifully - a timeless colourway.

Wheels and Tyres

Both wheels and tyres are in good condition - no significant issues to note.

The matched Michelin tyres are date coded (2019) and in size 207/70.

Bodywork

The bodywork looks straight with well fitting panels and gaps - the doors all open and close easily .

The bodywork looks good and there are no visible signs of any serious corrosion on any key areas. Also, moving under the car, all looks good and very solid.

The wheel arches, sills and underside look good - there's just a bit of corrosion in the boot but not looking that serious and should be able to be fixed with a strip and local repaint.

Being picky, there are a couple of minor dings that are shown in the images that need attention - these we feel could be handled inexpensively by a mobile dent specialist.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

The paint is good across the car - it's even in both colour and texture. It looks great in the springtime sun and compliments well against the brightwork.

Paul tells us that the car was largely repainted some 32 years ago, according to the previous owner - it’s really stood the test of time and Old English White is the car's original colour.

There are a few chips that could be improved easily - again nothing serious.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

Both are really good across the car - the chrome is in really good condition as you'll see in the images and videos. Additionally, the car wears new black and silver period style pressed number plates and is a 'B' registration.

Interior

The MKII is a special place to be - this is no exception and the satin wood finish is stunning.

Seats and Carpets

Both the leather seats and carpets are in good condition.

There's a nice amount of wear to the seats and they are plump and supportive - no issues to note.

Paul also tells us new front seat belts have been fitted too.

Dashboard

Everything is in excellent condition - as mentioned, the wood finish is really attractive and all fittings are in good condition.

The glovebox interior together with the rear picnic tables are in fantastic condition; really lovely.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Both look like original fitments and are in good condition.

Mechanics

The engine is really lovely, it starts on the button and the car drives really well - a proper 3.8 driving experience.

Engine and Gearbox

This car is all about that famous 3.8-litre engine pared to a manual with overdrive gearbox - a fantastic combination.

The car started with no hesitation on our cold start and settled into a smooth tick over. Good oil pressure was observed and no signs of any excessive smoke was seen.

Please take a few minutes to watch the 'On the Road' video to see the car start and being taken out for a brief run around the local area. It drove really well with no issues to note.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has has suspension and brake work in the past. We've been told that the rear suspension has been recently restored with new springs and ancillaries.

Paul has checked the brakes and he's also renewed the master cylinder too. Just a small thing to note, there was a small bit of brake judder, nothing serious but just mentioning as may need to be considered longer term.

The Drive

As mentioned, we had an enjoyable drive around the local area with all gauges working as they should, i.e. temperature was normal and oil pressure was good too.

Importantly the overdrive worked perfectly, as you can see in the video.

Performance was good with the car being responsive, positive and easy to drive.

Electrics and Other

Electrics are minimal on this car but Paul reports all work as expected.

The radio is a beautiful and hard-to-find original. A modern CD player has been removed and this replacement original radio has not yet been wired up, so working condition is for the next owner to discover.

The car has been fitted with a stainless steel exhaust and electronic ignition. Also, a switchable additional powerful electric fan has been fitted, however, Paul tells us he's never needed to use it as the car runs cool.

Importantly the car also has it's toolkit, as you can see in the images.

History and Paperwork

So an original right-hand-drive car with all the important MKII ingredients at a fraction of the cost - there's equity to be had in this car that's not easy to find in this buoyant classic market.

The car spent time in South Africa and Germany, however, most of the time was spent in Canada with just one owner. Please take a look at the paperwork in the media file to assess the level of history and Paul also tells us it comes complete with the workshop manuals.

The car was assembled for Jaguar in South Africa and is an original RHD car. The cars' chassis number signifies that it was assembled in South Africa (prefix A) and with Laycock De Normanville overdrive (suffix DN).
