Introduction

Colin Bashford
Professional Consigner

Iconic for its long bonnet and elegant proportions, the E-Type is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever created.

Some cars become icons through performance, others through beauty. The Jaguar E-Type achieved both from the moment it was unveiled in 1961, earning a reputation as one of the most captivating sports cars ever built. By 1967, the Series 1 had reached the pinnacle of its development, combining the proven 4.2-litre XK straight-six with the purity of Malcolm Sayer's original design before later revisions altered the formula. With its impossibly long bonnet, covered headlamps and unmistakable silhouette, the Series 1 Roadster remains the E-Type in its most coveted and evocative form.

More than half a century later, its appeal is as strong as ever. Equally at home on a winding B-road as it is commanding attention on the concours lawn, the E-Type offers a driving experience that feels every bit as special as its looks suggest. Beautifully engineered, effortlessly charismatic and forever associated with Britain's golden age of sports car design, it is a machine that continues to justify every accolade bestowed upon it.

This 4.2 Series 1 Open Two-Seater has been in our vendor's ownership for around 16 years. Restored shortly before he acquired it, the car is accompanied by its Heritage Certificate, along with invoices for genuine Jaguar parts and work carried out by a local specialist.

Although exempt from both MOT testing and Vehicle Excise Duty, it also benefits from a current MOT valid until 20 May 2027, offering additional peace of mind to its next custodian.

This listing was written from information supplied by Colin after meeting Mike the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Having completed two European tours with our vendor, and further touring with its previous owner, this E-Type has proven itself to be a genuinely usable classic.

Mike has thoroughly enjoyed his 16 years of ownership, taking the E-Type on tours through the mountain passes of Switzerland, France and Italy, as well as through Monte Carlo, where he captured a video of the car's straight-six echoing through the famous tunnel.

Mike told us, "In the 16 years I've owned the car I’ve not had any breakdown or recovery; also I’ve driven the North Coast 500 several times plus several holiday trips to Yorkshire and the Silverstone Classic Weekend".

Remarkably, Mike has had very little to do in terms of maintenance during his ownership. Aside from replacing the clutch master cylinder, the E-Type has required no major mechanical work.

Now using the car less frequently than he once did, Mike has decided the time is right to offer it for sale through our auction.

Mike will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments section below.

Exterior

Finished in red, with wire wheels and bonnet vents adding to its purposeful stance, this E-Type pays homage to Jaguar's illustrious racing heritage.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wire wheels appear to be in lovely condition, with the brightwork retaining a good shine. We did notice some age-related tarnishing to the driver's side front wheel, visible behind the spokes.

A matching set of Hankook tyres are fitted, all of which appear to be in excellent condition, with date markings from 2023 and fitted in 2025.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The bodywork around the E-Type appeared to be in lovely condition. We did not notice any dents or scratches, although we did observe that the passenger door sits slightly proud. Mike advised us that it could benefit from a little adjustment.

Aside from this, the shut lines looked nice and tight, with the driver's door, bonnet and boot all opening and closing without issue.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The red paintwork appeared to be in lovely condition, with a deep lustre and a beautiful shine. In direct sunlight, we did notice some very light swirl marks, although these do little to detract from the overall presentation of the car. We did not notice any scratches or significant chips in the paintwork.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass around the E-Type appeared to be in great condition. We did not note any chips or cracks in the windscreen or side windows.

The chrome trim around the car also looked to be in lovely condition, with no pitting or significant age-related marks observed. Mike believes the hood to be the original mohair item, and while it was showing some signs of wear, it remained in good condition considering its age.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

image

Interior

The wooden-rimmed steering wheel and manual gearbox create a wonderfully traditional driving environment, reinforcing the E-Type's reputation as a true drivers' car.

Seats and Carpets

Fitted with leather seats, they presented in good condition, retaining their shape well over the years and showing only light signs of age, including some creasing.

The carpets also appeared to be in good condition, with no stains observed during our visit.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

image

Dashboard

The original black dashboard also appeared to be in nice condition.

We did not observe any cracks or splits, although Mike advised us that the radio and clock are currently not working.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The wooden-rimmed steering wheel appeared to be in great condition, showing very little sign of use.

The gearstick also looked to be in nice condition, with the white numbering remaining clear and legible.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

image

Mechanics

The 4.2-litre straight-six beneath the long bonnet gives the E-Type plenty of character, adding to its unmistakable appeal.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up on the second attempt when cold, settling nicely once started and performing well on the road, accompanied by a lovely roar from the exhaust.

The 4-speed manual gearbox also performed well, engaging gears easily with no unwanted crunching or other noises. It pulled strongly through the gears, providing the engaging driving experience expected from an E-Type.

The car has retained its auxiliary originality except for a few modern improvements, including: aluminium radiator / header tank; large electric fan; electronic ignition and hi-torque starter motor.

The engine block is a replacement and its number is 7B 6055-8 - however, the original factory cylinder head is fitted and matches the Heritage Certificate, i.e. 7E 12707-9.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension handled the roads well during our short drive, taking in a mixture of urban roads and dual carriageways, where we reached the national speed limit. There were no unwanted noises from underneath the car.

The brakes also performed well, bringing the E-Type to a stop without issue. We did not observe any squealing from the brakes during our drive.

Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

image

The Drive

With Jaguar's racing heritage behind it, the E-Type always had a reputation to uphold, and it certainly does not disappoint. Taking to the road with an unmistakable presence and impressive ability, it never fails to put a smile on the driver's face.

The E-Type performed very well during our drive, pulling strongly through the gears with a wonderful soundtrack following behind. The suspension also impressed, with no clunks or bangs observed during our time on the road.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

image

Electrics and Other

The E-Type is a relatively simple car in terms of its electrical systems. We did not test every function during our visit, but Mike advised us that everything was working as expected apart from the radio and clock.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market after around 16 years with Mike, this E-Type was restored prior to his ownership and has proven to be a reliable and enjoyable classic.

Having taken custodianship of the E-Type in 2010, Mike has thoroughly enjoyed his ownership, taking the car on two European road trips through some of the continent's most scenic routes. During his time with the car, he has not needed to carry out any major mechanical work, with the only significant replacement being the clutch master cylinder. Any maintenance or servicing required has been entrusted to a local 3-generation-owner garage using genuine Jaguar parts from SNG Barratt.

Restored by the previous owner, Mike has continued to care for the E-Type meticulously, keeping it in the lovely condition you see today. It comes with its Heritage Certificate, two sets of keys and a comprehensive history file detailing the restoration work, along with invoices and records of any further work carried out during Mike's ownership. An engine rebuild was also completed in 2000.

The car also benefits from a current MOT valid until 20 May 2027, despite being exempt from both MOT testing and Vehicle Excise Duty. Mike has always stored the E-Type in his garage, keeping it covered and with a heater underneath during the winter months to help maintain its condition.

A wonderful example of the Series 1 E-Type, ready to be enjoyed on another tour with its next custodian.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.

Network Connection – your device may lose connection and you’re not able to bid, or see the latest bidding history.
