An iconic, family-friendly grand tourer combining sports car performance with comfort.

Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1966, the Series 1 2+2 was Jaguar’s elegant answer to a growing dilemma: how to allow the family man to experience the thrills of the world’s most glamorous sports car. By lengthening the standard E-Type's wheelbase by nine inches and raising the roofline, Jaguar created a practical Grand Tourer that retained Malcolm Sayer’s iconic, long-bonnet proportions while finally accommodating a pair of rear seats. These increased dimensions completely redefined the interior ergonomics, transforming the cockpit into a vastly more comfortable long-distance cruiser.

Under that famously sculpted bonnet sits the legendary 4.2-litre straight-six XK engine, which was capable of effortlessly dispatching the 0–60 mph sprint in under eight seconds before charging onward to a top speed of 140 mph. Leaving most contemporary sports cars in its wake, the 2+2 became an instant sales success by beautifully bridging the gap between Jaguar’s traditional saloon comfort and their racing-bred heritage.

Coming from almost 5 years with our vendor, this 1967 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 2+2 is finished in classic red with a black interior. The car is backed by £13,000 worth of invoices from the past five years, which includes an £8,000 investment in the engine alone. Complementing this mechanical work is a professional, though undocumented, exterior restoration, alongside significant additional spending on the brakes, suspension, fuel system, and structural components. While the major mechanical and cosmetic work has been completed, the car now requires some interior light renovation to truly finish it.

It comes complete with two sets of keys and holds a valid MOT until October 2026, offering peace of mind despite its road tax and MOT-exempt status.

For me, the 2+2 has always been the preferred choice, thanks to the extra headroom and much more accommodating cabin.

An experienced Jaguar restorer, Max purchased the car from a fellow enthusiast as a project in 2021, having always aspired to own a Series 1.

Recognising that a better opportunity to own an E-Type might never come along, he took on this structurally solid example.

Utilising his years of professional bodyshop expertise, Max focused his attention on perfecting the bodywork while ensuring the car was mechanically sorted to his own exacting standards.

Exterior

Professionally restored, this structurally solid, E-Type coupe ensures lasting longevity.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” chrome wire wheels present smartly, with decent, tight spokes and no rim marks.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Pirelli Cinturato HS tyres; the front shows a spec of 205/70 - these are date-coded from 2023. All have plenty of even tread.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

Bodywork

The exterior looks superb and is completely free of damage or noticeable corrosion. All the doors feature brand-new seals; as a result, they sit slightly proud rather than perfectly flush, though they open and close with ease. The bonnet is perfectly aligned and flush with the body.

The car is structurally solid, featuring a sound floor pan, chassis rails, wheel wells, and engine bay. As part of a bodywork restoration in 2023, the rear floor panel, rear jacking point, and trailing arm pocket were completely renewed.

Paint

The red paint boasts a deep, rich lustre and an excellent shine. The finish is consistent throughout and free of any significant blemishes.

Glass and Trim

While the photos show damage to the windscreen, this will be replaced prior to handing the car over to its new owner. All glass seals are in good condition, and the lights and lenses are free of issues. There are some mild marks on the rear boot lid glass.

The trim presents well overall; there are minor signs of age on the greenhouse trim, rear lamp bezels, and door handles, which show mild pitting but nothing that detracts from the car's appearance.

The bumpers are securely mounted and show typical light ageing, most notably on the offside rear bumper.

Interior

Ripe for a refresh, the interior remains entirely complete and usable.

Seats and Carpets

The front seats show typical age-related creasing but are generally free of rips or excessive wear. While the rear seats exhibit some discolouration and a few minor marks, the carpets are in good condition and appear to be recently fitted.

Reassuringly, the entire cabin is completely dry and free of damp.

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console show minor signs of age, with light wear on the padding and facia that is entirely acceptable for a car of this vintage. While the dial bezels show their age, the instruments remain perfectly legible and are said to function exactly as they should.

The door cards are in good shape, and the headlining was replaced in 2024. New sun visors will be fitted before handover. The rest of the interior trim matches the rest of the cabin - showing typical age-related wear but remaining generally free of significant damage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering column shows its age, and the wooden-rimmed steering wheel has a small split where it meets the mildly pitted spokes.

The gear lever condition is entirely in keeping with the age and character of the cabin.

Mechanics

Alongside the exterior and structure, the engine has been a primary focus of the car's restoration.

Engine and Gearbox

The car starts effortlessly without the choke, catching instantly. The engine sounds healthy, with no metallic noises, misfires, or backfires, and all dashboard warning lights remain off. The exhaust shows no excessive smoke, and the car idles smoothly with no hiccups. There were no signs of any fluid leaks during our visit.

The engine bay is smartly presented, reflecting its recent overhaul and maintenance history. It received a new alternator in 2025, following significant work in 2024 that included the installation of a high-performance ignition system, plus a £2,000 expenditure on a new flywheel and bolts, starter motor, carburettor gaskets, and distributor. In 2022, a major £2,000 engine build by Roland Alsop saw the head skimmed, the block rebored, and new cylinder sleeves/liners and Associated Engineering pistons fitted. Before this, a 2021 cooling system overhaul introduced an upgraded fan and cowl, a new aluminium radiator, a new water pump assembly, and an electronic fuel pump.

The gearbox operates flawlessly, offering a long but mechanical and precise throw. There was no crunching through the gears, and all shifts remained perfectly smooth. Additionally, the clutch benefits from a recent replacement in 2024.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension is compliant, handling uneven road surfaces effortlessly without any unwanted feedback or harshness. It has been mildly lowered to improve the car's stance, though it hasn't compromised ride comfort. Additionally, the suspension benefited from an overhaul in 2021, when the original bushes were replaced with a set of polyurethane items.

The car brakes evenly and pulls up straight, with no squeals or pulling to either side. The braking system was premium-upgraded in 2022 with a Coopercraft alloy four-pot brake kit, following the replacement of the brake master cylinder in 2021.

The Drive

Initially developed as a bored-out evolution of the revered 3.8-litre, Jaguar's iconic 4.2-litre cast-iron block went on to power the marque through six consecutive decades. This unit’s increased torque vastly improved flexibility and throttle response; today, thanks to extensive renovations and upgrades, it easily exceeds expectations.

Backed by significant investment over the last four years, the engine delivers undeniable performance and effortless thrills. It pulls cleanly and linearly across the rev range, accompanied by an exceptional exhaust note enhanced by a stainless steel system. On the move, the car handles gracefully, free of mechanical squeaks or unwanted rattles from the running gear, while the steering feels positive, precise, and tracks perfectly straight.

Even after a spirited test drive, the engine restarted immediately with no hot-start issues. The cooling fans remained on briefly as we parked up, doing their job perfectly on a particularly warm day. The oil pressure remained healthy at around 40 PSI on the move, and the cooling system performed faultlessly throughout.

The current owner, Max, confirms that neither oil pressure nor engine temperature has ever posed an issue during his ownership.

Electrics and Other

A galvanised fuel tank was fitted in 2024 along with a new fuel pipe kit.

The car also comes equipped with a magnetic front registration plate.

History and Paperwork

It is accompanied by an impressive history file containing £15,000 worth of invoices dating back to 1996.

First registered in April 1967, this home-market, right-hand-drive example boasts just three long-term owners from new. After being placed into storage when a previous restoration project was put on hold, it was acquired by Max in 2021. While the car received an engine rebuild by Goya Engineering in 1996, the vast majority of the accompanying history file dates from 2021 to the present.

Around £13,000 has been invested under current ownership, covering extensive work to the engine, structure, brakes, steering, and electrics. This is supplemented by an undocumented but significant investment in the exterior paint and bodywork, courtesy of Max’s professional expertise as a bodyshop specialist. The car is accompanied by a comprehensive folder of parts invoices from renowned specialists SNG Barratt and Moss, alongside £4,000 in receipts for specialist engine work carried out by Turner Performance & Diagnostics in 2024 and Roland Alsop in 2022. It comes complete with an MOT valid until October 2026 and two sets of keys.

    Hi what work was carried out on the body restoration and what in your opinion would it benefit from in the future
    Really keen on the car could perhaps do with seeing it in the flesh but anything you have done in your ownership to enhance the car would be worth hearing about.cheers Merv
