Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

A simply stunning E-Type that's been with the same owners for 32 years and presented here in superb condition, oh and arguably in the best colour; Gunmetal Grey.

We all know this car as one of the most iconic cars ever made, the E-Type is just stunning in every way, and this example is no different. Of course, there's not much to say about an E-Type that hasn't already been written over and over again, so we'll leave that alone this time in the introduction.

What we will say is that this example is a home market right-hand-drive car that is in great condition and mechanically sound. We had a short drive out during its consignment, and it's one of the best drivers' examples we've been out in for a while.

Clive and his brother have carried out this extensive restoration to this British icon over a four year period to create their perfect E-Type - we think they can well and truly say they've accomplished what they set out to do.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Clive the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I purchased the E-Type with my brother 32 years ago, where it stood for several years until we started the restoration.

After searching for a nice restoration project Clive and his brother spotted this series one E-Type Jaguar for sale. The car was initially sold in the UK and was then exported to California, where it spent several years basking in the sunshine. It was then imported back to the UK, when Clive and his brother purchased it 32 years ago.

The car is in stunning condition and has been given a full restoration which was completed approximately five years ago. Since then, the vehicle has had the odd run out here and there but has not been given any excessive use, which is the reason for the sale of this stunning example.

Please feel free to ask Clive any questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The fixed head coupe is a beautiful design when approached from any angle - an unmistakable British design icon.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels have been upgraded from the original 5j wheels to 5.5j - these have a chrome finish and are in superb condition.

The tyres are matching Sprint Classic, which have a good amount of tread remaining.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

The E-Type has been given an extensive restoration over four years. The car has received new door skins, sills and a secondhand bonnet, amongst other repairs, resulting in an excellent fit and finish of all the panels, which have an even and matching panel gap. The doors open nicely and close with a firm hand. The bonnet stay is missing and uses a carefully crafted broom handle to hold it up dead centre.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Colour choices are important, and originally the E-Type was finished in burgundy. However, for a more elegant look, Jaguar Gunmetal Grey has been used, which has been applied to what looks to be a high standard. There are no chips to mention along the bonnet's leading edge, mainly due to it not covering many miles since completion.

Again, we have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork and paint for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The windows all around the car are in excellent condition with no apparent scratches, and the windscreen has been replaced. The chrome trim around the windows is reported to be the original and has some very slight tarnishing in several places. The rubbers all look in good condition with minimal signs of age.

The headlights are both in good order with no chips or cracks, and the rear lights have been replaced for new items.

Interior

Black leather and a wood rim steering wheel are the perfect tonic when sitting inside the E-Type.

Seats and Carpets

The black leather seats are in excellent condition, having been retrimmed. The rear seat is also stunning and has never really been sat in. The door cards have been finished in the same leather as the seats and have no scuffs or damage to show.

The carpets have been replaced and, as you would expect from the car's condition, are in excellent order. Inside, the boot is nicely trimmed to match the rest of the interior, and under the floor is a painted spare wheel.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good order, with no damage on the upper or lower dash sections. The instruments are working as they should apart from the odometer, as the needle does jump around at low speeds and is reported by Clive to read ~10mph out; the odometer shows a reading of 2,428 miles.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three-spoke wood rim steering wheel is in good condition with no signs of excessive wear, and the gearknob is an aluminium ball style.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 4.2 straight-six is probably one of Jaguar’s most iconic engines - ~265bhp out of the box, not bad for 1967.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.2 litre engine has been fully rebuilt to ensure everything is as it should be for the E-Type. From cold, the car needs just a touch of choke to balance the triple SU carburettors and then it’s off purring like a kitten and sounds fantastic.

Aside from the engine being rebuilt, the gearbox has been taken apart, inspected, and given the all-clear. Once this went back in, Clive wasn’t happy with it, so out came the engine and box again for another inspection, and he instructed the gearbox builders to fit a new layshaft. They said it didn't need it but fitted it anyway for Clive, and guess what, it made no difference. The gearbox was still in excellent order, and now with a new layshaft. Still, this means the new custodian won’t need to replace it anytime soon. The differential was also stripped down and inspected, which again was given the all clear. The four-speed gearchange is nice and smooth and has no untoward noises coming from the transmission.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension has also been fully rebuilt and gives a lovely ride with no knocks or bangs coming from either corner of the E-Type. The brakes are also working as they should, bringing the car to a halt in a straight line and with no juddering through the foot pedal.

The Drive

Out in the E-Type, it is a fantastic car to be in - the sound, the looks, what more could you ask for than to drive around in one of the most iconic British cars of all time.

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car is in excellent condition, with no apparent signs of wear to the buttons or dials, and the lettering is in place below the main switch panel.

There is good oil pressure as you go down the road, and we mentioned the odometer earlier, but everything else is said to work as it should.

History and Paperwork

Owned for 32 years and restored five years ago after a four year restoration to bring the E-Type to this superb standard.

Clive has kept some of the invoices for parts purchased during the restoration, but unfortunately, some have been lost over time. You only have to see the car to appreciate that it has been an extensive restoration, and as we all know, jobs like these don't come cheap!

Are you looking for one of the most beautiful cars ever made? Look no further! You have just come across the car you have been looking for.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Do all the electrics work as they should, lights, gauges, dashboard lights and would it pass an MOT should it put in for one, in your honest opinion?

How do you lock it- can’t see any key hole?
How can you tell it’s a 1.5 as can’t see it documented.

Just curious given all the great work done I wonder why you would not fix the odometer and bonnet latch. Any particular reason?
