Introduction

The choice for many bank robbers shows that the Mk2 Jaguar can hold its own.

Created for the new age of long-distance motorway cruising, with the potential to traverse the continent in comfort and space, the Mk2 Jaguar established the company as one of the world's foremost manufacturers of sporting family cars.

Introduced in 1959, the Mk2 was an elegant evolution of the original models. It employed the advanced XK series of engines, which went on to power the E-Type. It soon established itself as something of an "everyman’s car", with its race-track provenance continuing to enhance Jaguar's reputation as a producer of finely-tuned, sporty cars.

The 3.4-litre, with twin SU HD6 carburettors and manual gearboxes (with overdrive), is often considered one of the more sought-after Mk2 versions. Producing a useful ~210bhp, these finely balanced cars still feel genuinely quick to drive.

I have owned and driven this 1968 Jaguar for eight years, and it's now time for someone else to enjoy this British classic and save it from sitting in storage.

This listing was written from information supplied by XXXXX after meeting XXXXX the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

A true British classic design that will always look on point.

Wheels and Tyres

The wire wheels, painted in silver with chrome knock-offs, are generally in good condition with minimal signs of age.

A set of Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres is fitted to the car: these have good tread remaining.

image

Bodywork

A former keeper restored the Jaguar in 1995, and a few blisters are now creeping in, mainly noted at the bottom of the doors and around the front wings. Please look carefully at the detailed photographs provided.

One key area of the Jaguar that has received extensive work is the front chassis section, which was replaced from the bulkhead forward in 2017 when I had the new clutch fitted.

image

Paint

Finished in what is thought to be 'British Racing Green', the paintwork presents well. Some areas around the front wings have been repaired and are in primer, and there is also a small amount of lacquer peel in the same area.

image

Glass and Trim

All windows appear in relatively good condition, with minimal signs of age and no excessive scratches.

The chrome window surrounds, bumpers, and door handles have some light patina in keeping with the Jaguar's age. However, these parts are readily available for anyone wanting to take the Jaguar to the next level.

image

Interior

Burr walnut with black leather – is there any better combination?

Seats and Carpets

The interior was re-trimmed around 12 years ago in black leather, and remains in excellent condition with no real signs of excessive use on the front or rear seats.

At the same time the carpets were replaced, so these are also in excellent order, as is the headlining, which sits in place with no sagging.

Inside the boot, the spare wheel, jack, and original tool kit are in place.

image

Dashboard

The original burr walnut dashboard is in decent condition, bringing a real sense of luxury to this British classic – just as you would expect from Jaguar.

The Smiths instruments are working correctly, and the odometer shows a reading of ~9,298 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A wood-rim Moto-Lita steering wheel complements the rest of the wood inside the Jaguar and is in excellent condition.

The original gear knob fits perfectly in the palm of your hand as you power through the gears.

image

Mechanics

Fitted with the 3.4-litre inline-six, which runs beautifully and makes the car a pleasure to drive.

Engine and Gearbox

Well presented and well maintained, the 3.4-litre powerhouse is the heart of the Mk2 it has been reconditioned. I had the carburettors balanced by a Jaguar specialist, which means the straight-six purrs like a kitten.

A new clutch was fitted in 2017, just before the car went into storage. The gear change is smooth, and the Jag pulls strongly through the gears.

image

Suspension and Brakes

During the extensive work carried out, the brakes received a full overhaul with new cylinders, a steering rack, and a huge list of other parts that can be seen on the invoice.

image

The Drive

Driving the 1968 Jaguar Mk2 3.4-litre is a charming blend of elegance and performance from a bygone era. The silky straight-six delivers smooth, eager power with a distinctive growl, while the manual gearbox rewards deliberate, precise shifts.

The steering feels weighty but communicative, and the suspension provides a supple yet composed ride that suits the car’s sporting saloon character.

It’s a car that invites unhurried driving, combining luxury refinement and mechanical engagement in equal measure.

image

Electrics and Other

All the switches are in good condition and working as expected. A period radio is also fitted.

History and Paperwork

An extensive paperwork file helps showcase the history of this Jaguar.

The paperwork dates back to the early 1990s, with a detailed list of what work has been carried out over the years. The most notable year was 2017, when I spent close to £11,000 on the mechanicals and interior, taking care of some issues that needed to be addressed and also helping to future-proof this British classic.

Hi Vinny,

Philip has asked me to pass on his reply:

“The car runs perfectly as the carburettors have just been rebuilt and tuned by a Jaguar-trained expert. The engine, being reconditioned, has done under 10,000 miles so it’s been tuned by same garage.”

Thanks,
Colin.
