Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

The MKII was one of the most popular luxury vehicles in the '60s.

The 1968 Jaguar 240 was a refined evolution of the classic MKII saloon, introduced as part of Jaguar’s “240/340” update to modernise the range. Powered by the 2.4-litre XK straight-six, this produced around ~133bhp. Keeping up with Jaguar’s high standards, it offered smooth performance, excellent ride comfort, and the traditional Jaguar blend of luxury and sporting character. Notable updates included slimmer bumpers, improved interior fittings, and the option of overdrive on the automatic transmission or a manual four-speed gearbox, which this particular model has. These changes made the 240 a more usable and slightly lighter successor to the earlier Mk2, while retaining its timeless style and charm.

Sadly, due to the tyres being flat we were unable to pull the car out of the garage on the day of our visit, so we did the best we could do with the access we had.

This is a one family ownership since new project car, which is perfect for anyone looking to get stuck into something over the winter months and comes with a very low reserve.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting William the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Built 57 years ago, it has remained with the original family.

What a nice treat on Valentine’s Day in 1968, which was when William's dad, had the 240 Jaguar registered.

Since then, the car was passed to William in 1999.

The Jaguar has been in storage for over 50 years and William will he will be happy to answer any questions, to the best of knowledge, in the comments section below.

Exterior

This curvy '60s saloon deserves to see the light of day again – who will give it that chance?

Wheels and Tyres

The steel wheels fitted to the Jaguar, as far as we can see, have been finished in gloss black with a chrome hub cap.

All four tyres are flat, and it should be assumed they need to be replaced.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

Looking at the parts we could see, the bodywork on the Jaguar looks to be in good order. There doesn’t appear to be any blistering across the front end or down the driver’s side, and the door gaps have an even gap on the driver’s side.

Please take a look at the photos in the Mechanical section, where you can see some of the suspension components, which all appear to have minimal surface corrosion, suggesting it has been kept dry for the past 50 years of storage.

We’ve highlighted our observations in more detail through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in dark blue, of course the paintwork would benefit from a deep clean and polish, and there are a few blemishes. However, with that said, the car does have a shine to it and may just be a pleasant surprise once it’s out in the open.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there yourself. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car to make up your own mind about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windows in the Jaguar have some age-related marks, as to be expected, and the rear window has been removed but is inside the car. The chrome surrounds have a small amount of tarnishing but do have a bright finish.

Some chrome trims run down the bonnet; the passenger-side one has been removed, but there are some trims inside the car.

Please note: we could not see the passenger side; therefore, we do not know if the trims are in place or missing.

image

Interior

The red seats gives a nice, luxurious feel inside the Jaguar.

Seats and Carpets

The seats appear in good condition - we could not see the rear seat condition due to the parts covering it.

The door cards on the driver’s side have been removed; they may be included with the parts, but we can’t guarantee they are.

Fitted with red carpets to match the seats, these do show some signs of age, in keeping with the Jaguar’s age. There is some damage to the headlining in the rear section, but as you probably know, many items for the Mk2 Jaguar are readily available.

image

Dashboard

The classic burr walnut dashboard has had an additional panel fitted on the passenger-side fascia where the glove box would typically be, with some additional gauges installed.

All of the instruments look well, albeit a little dusty, but as we didn’t run the car, we don’t know if they are working correctly.

The odometer shows a reading of ~84,852.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Fitted with the original twin-spoke steering wheel, this has some light signs of age, as does the gear-knob.

image

Mechanics

The inline six-cylinder 2.4-litre still offers good performance and respectable fuel economy.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the 2.4-litre inline-six, it sits neatly within the engine bay.

This hasn’t been run for several years and of course would require some recommissioning before trying to start it.

There is a manual gearbox coupled to the 2.4-litre engine, but again, this would benefit from at least an oil change before being driven.

image

Suspension and Brakes

Before being driven, we recommend that the suspension and brakes be thoroughly checked over and recommissioned by a qualified person, as they have been standing for 50 years.

image

The Drive

The car remained in the garage during our visit due to the flat tyres, so we couldn't do our usual drive out.

When fully functional, the MKII Jaguar is a fantastic vehicle to own and drive.

image

Electrics and Other

The switchgear in the car appears in good condition.

Obviously, with the car undrivable, it has not been possible to test anything.

History and Paperwork

One owner from new has had the pleasure of this 60s classic.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much paperwork with the Jaguar other than the V5 and a few photographs taken several years ago. There is, however, a handy service manual specifically for the MkII Jaguar.

As we have mentioned, this 1968 Jaguar is being auctioned as a "barnfind" project, and some parts may be missing.

The perfect winter project, which looks like it needs recommissioning and the odd bit of trim refitting rather than a complete restoration.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: this check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, sit back, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If you have any questions, no matter how small, please ask the seller in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win, just like in a traditional auction.
