Introduction

Dom Ginn
Professional Consigner

One of the true British icons which can still fend off many when it comes to styling and performance - what more do you need from a British icon?

Series one prices have skyrocketed in recent years, with the best-of-the-best examples fetching eye-watering money. However, whilst prices have also risen for series two cars, they still remain relatively affordable. It's not uncommon to see exceptional series two cars with all the provenance being offered at six-figure sums and more. Although, as we all know, an asking price and an actual sale price are two totally different things.

This particular example has been with our vendor for ~21.5 years and is an honest car that has been enjoyed, cherished and well-maintained, as seen in the extensive history file. Coming to market, it is a matching number car in its original specification of "Signal Red" over black, and an original UK home market RHD example, just 3 former keepers registered, it's a solid usable car that comes with a wealth of history, including MOTs from the last ~20 years plus some covering 1974-1982. The current MOT expires July 2023.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Tim the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

The Jaguar E-Type has always been up there as one of my most wanted cars - the past 21 years with it have been a pleasure.

It was Tim’s son who persuaded him to follow his dream and buy this lovely series 2 E-Type some 21 years ago. He goes on to tell us "We chose the Series 2 as we felt it had the best combination of style and practicality. It turned out to be a good arrangement for me as he provided half the finance and I have done all the driving!".

As well as the repairs and maintenance documented in the history section, Tim has in his ownership had the seats covered. The car also benefits from electronic ignition. Tim and his wife have decided that the time is right to sell now, and are hoping a new owner can enjoy the car in the UK and France as he has done in the past. Please feel free to ask him any questions about the car in the comments below.

Exterior

What is there left to say about the beauty of the E-Type Jaguar which hasn’t already been said - it’s simply stunning.

Wheels and Tyres

The chrome wire wheels have been replaced with some slightly wider than the E-type would have left the factory with. These give the car a somewhat more pronounced stance. They do have some tarnishing in keeping with the age of the vehicle.

The tyres are all matching Federal Super Steel’s, which have a good amount of tread remaining. The spare wheel is a standard size item.
Please see the image gallery to take a closer look at the wheels.

Bodywork

Smooth, sculpted and elegant, the E-Type roadster is a thing of beauty. Looking around the car, it presents itself well with panel gaps to the door's and front end looking good, and there don’t appear to be any dings or dents to point out. The boot looks like it could do with a bit of adjustment to sit a bit more flush to the body.

The roof is in excellent condition. It sits nice and tight with minimal creasing to the fabric and rear window. Opening is easy enough with the release from inside and quite simply folding it back.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in the popular choice of "Signal Red", the Jaguar looks to be in good order. There are some patches of micro blistering and blemishes which have appeared in places around the car. Some chips are present to the front end and the edges of the wheel arches, which have unavoidably been picked up on some of the many journeys Tim has made in the E-Type.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windscreen and rear window are in good condition with no apparent scratches to mention. The side windows have some minor scuff marks where they have been open and closed over the years. The Window seals look in good condition, as does the chrome trim, which has some age related scratches often seen in chrome.

The chrome bumpers are also in good order with minimal tarnishing for the age, the worst being the underside of the rear bumper. Lighting the way, the headlights have no apparent chips to the lenses; the same can be said for the low-down indicators and the rear light lenses.

Interior

Black leather is simple - yet still elegant enough to look perfect in an E-Type.

Seats and Carpets

Inside, the E-Type is a nice place to be and doesn’t appear as old as it is, thanks to the re-trimmed seats. The condition of the seats is excellent, with just a light amount of creasing. There are some signs of light patina to the door cards, but this just compliments the classy look of this 60’s icon.

The carpets appear in good condition with no noticeable signs of excess wear to the driver or passenger side. Inside the boot, the spare wheel is present, and there are no areas of concern that we could see to the floor.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Dashboard

The dashboard is in good condition, with no splits or cracks. The instruments are said to work as they should, providing all the vital information you need when driving the E-Type. The odometer shows a reading of ~97,956 miles, which tallies up with the MOT history available.

Please see the interior gallery for more hi-resolution images.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel is a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita item and is in nice condition. The gear knob looks to be the original and shows minimal wear.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

Mechanics

The 4.2 litre straight six that lies beneath the bonnet is waiting and eager to be used by the owner.

Engine and Gearbox

The E-Type fires up as it should without hesitation, clearing its throat through the triple SU carburettors. No untoward noises are coming from the engine, and everything around the bay looks to be in good order. The engine did receive a rebuild to the cylinder head and new shells in the bottom half in late 2003 / early 2004, around ~12,000 miles ago.

Also rebuilt was the gearbox in 2007 at around ~90,500 miles. This has a smooth change, and there are no unwanted noises coming from the transmission as the car moves through the gears. Watch the video to see the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

Over the years, the E-Type has received a considerable amount of work to the suspension, ensuring it has always been kept in good condition. As a result, there didn't appear to be any knocks or bangs from either corner, and the ride is smooth.

The brakes have also been well maintained, which has been confirmed with regular MOT tests to ensure there are no issues with the only thing to bring the E-Type to a halt.

The Drive

The E-type Jaguar is undoubtedly a great vehicle to own, one which you can drive with pride and your head held high, knowing it’s one of the most stunning vehicles to come out of the 1960s.

The car drives well. It seemed to run a little hot in stationary or slow moving traffic, but the oil pressure was good - over 40psi at the local speed limit of 20mph. We noticed that the speedometer needle wobbled a little, although all other instruments and electrics appeared to be working perfectly.

It doesn’t disappoint in handling, performance or comfort. The E-type is a fantastic machine you will enjoy owning for many years to come, and this will be confirmed once you get the car on the open road with the roof down and the straight singing to you.

Electrics and Other

The main section of switchgear lies in the centre of the dash, and everything is reported to be working as it should. There is some age-related wear to the buttons, but nothing that looks out of place, and is in keeping with the age and mileage.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images.

History and Paperwork

There is a substantial amount of history with this E-Type, a matching numbers car in Signal Red over black UK home market RHD roadster, coming to market from ~21.5 year ownership and just 3 former keepers registered.

Tim has several invoices for work carried out by various specialists over the years, including the engine and gearbox rebuild. In addition, several MOT certificates date from 1974 up until the most recent in 2022, with a few missing from the 90s. With that said, the car has been given a test every year for the past 21 years.

The production record certificate from the Jaguar Heritage Trust confirms the matching chassis and engine numbers, along with the spec and build date.

This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase a well-loved and cherished car which has remained with the same owner for the past 21 years. Tim and his wife admit, “it will be a sad day when the car goes, but it is the right time to let someone else have the pleasure of owning an E-type.”

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
