Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

A beautiful fixed head coupe E-Type, 4.2L straight six with manual gearbox, with a smart black finish; stunning.

We've all heard that famous quote from Enzo Ferrari about the E-Type... when you see one finished in black like like this FHC example you can certainly start to understand why.

Coming out of 16 years of ownership, the car was originally imported to the UK from the West Coast of America in the late 90's. The car has since had a full re-trim, and a full engine/mechanical rebuild in the UK in the late 90's, it is a solid example of a true British design icon and classic.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I've loved owning and maintaining this beautiful car, but now is the time for a new custodian to take the reins.

This example has been well kept in Johns ownership. He was a chartered engineer for Jaguar, and with his E-Type, has performed some useful upgrades like having electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump installed for practicality. He's kept the car dry stored in his ownership, clearly visible in the media we've taken showcasing condition.

The cars body was restored and repainted in America, before it was imported to the UK. John tells us that the story behind the cars arrival to the UK is an interesting one too... it was acquired in Las Vegas after two gentlemen lost a significant sum of money playing roulette! When imported in to the UK, it was re-trimmed and an engine rebuild completed in the late 90's.

Exterior

In its fixed head coupe form, the E-Type always looks like it's ready to roar into action.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with knock off wire wheels, and Corsa tyres all around. A series 2 like this just looks right in this combination, very elegant.

In terms of condition, the spinners all look in good condition, no dents from use etc. The chrome across the wheels showed no signs of flaking as captured in the photo and video reviews. Tyres all have good tread as visible in the media too.

Bodywork

In its FHC form, "Grace, Space, Pace" oozes from the design.

The bodywork on the car has been well maintained, we didn't notice any signs of corrosion on our visit that would worry us, and this is reflected in fine panel gaps and shut-lines across all the bodywork.

There are a number of small dents across the car, most notably on the top of the bonnet, take a look through the photos to see the detail. John chose not to have the underside of the car sealed/wax-oiled etc, and so you can see from the media that there is some surface rust, but importantly the structural elements and panels are solid and not rusting.

Paint

Finished in black, the car was restored professionally in the USA before its import to the UK.

The car was originally red, but the owners at the time of restoration chose to spray in black, a colour that really suits this car. The finish on the paint is a deep smooth black, even in colour across all panels. With the restoration having been completed 20+ years ago, there are a few blemishes on the car as you might expect, but the package as a whole is very good. Watch the detailed video review to see the quality.

Glass and Trim

Being a series 2 E-Type, the trim on the car is relatively subtle compared to the series 3. The trim looks good and in line with the age of the car.

Some small amounts of pitting on the chrome bumpers etc that you'd expect, but no flaking that we observed. John fitted a mesh grill behind the front bumpers to protect the radiator from stones etc, a sensible upgrade. All the glass looks good on this car too.

Interior

Expertly re-trimmed in a contrasting deep red when the car was restored, it's a lovely place to pilot from.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in a deep dark red leather, the seats look in great condition. Black carpets throughout the lower of the cabin also in very good condition.

The car was re-trimmed by the previous owner before John purchased the car. The standard of the work is very good, and only the drivers door shows some sign of wear on it, take a look at the video and photo media for the detailed view.

Dashboard

A proper series 2 dashboard, we love the simplicity of the row of switches to control the various lights and fans etc.

The dials on the car all look great too, and the leather trim on the dash looking in good shape.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Nardi steering wheel, and a lovely original looking 4 speed gearstick.

Both look good in line with the cars age and recorded mileage of ~121,000. Watch the video review to see more of the detail.

Mechanics

A 4.2L straight six engine, paired with a 4 speed manual gearbox, a classic E-Type combination.

Engine and Gearbox

After the restoration of the interior, in the late 90's the car received an engine overhaul. Other aspects of the car were serviced too, like the gearbox and rear axle.

You'll see a number of invoices for labour and parts when this work was carried out by the previous owner ~1998. The car started form cold on our visit without issue, watch the video to see and hear it in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The car had some extensive suspension work in 2004 as detailed in the invoices. It's covered only 2,000 miles since then, leaving the car handling just like an E-Type should.

John's kept the car MOT'd up until 2018, and you'll see from the online history, no advisories in that time. Also, John has just had a fresh MOT on the car with no advisories.

The Drive

A roaring 4.2L straight six up front, these cars were very fast for their time, and the FHC format must have instilled a lot of confidence in drivers compared to the OTS Jaguar racers of old.

Electronic ignition and fuel pump ensure that the car starts and fires up as it should.

Electrics and Other

John informs us that all the electrics on the car are working as they should do with just one exception; the water temp gauge has recently stopped working - as we know, they are delicate and can cause issues if not used regularly. If John has time he will have a look at it, however, John does inform us that the car's temperature is excellent and the fan kicks in correctly - there's also a manual switch for an auxiliary fan if your in traffic on a hot day.

You'll notice in the engine bay pictures that the car is fitted with a K&N type cone for the air filter, John still has the standard air-box which will be supplied with the car.

History and Paperwork

An American market car imported in to the UK in the 90's, matching numbers and owned by John for 16 years.

John has kept the car MOT'd through his ownership up until 2018 - the most recent one being done on the 3rd June. You'll see a host of MOTs tracking the cars life in the UK, the majority of which are advisory free. The history pack also comes with COA, and a host of invoices and receipts for the major engine refurbishment in 1998, as well as servicing and maintenance thereafter.

This is a matching numbers example, John has verified this having cross-referenced the engine block number against the COA.

We have performed our usual checks of verification on the car and seller, and the car is HPi clear.
