Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The E-Type is an automotive icon for its breathtaking, race-inspired design, potent performance.

The E-Type achieved legendary status immediately upon its unveiling at the 1961 Geneva Motor Show. Its aesthetic appeal, characterized by sleek lines, was coupled with potent performance and a modest price point. The design was heavily influenced by the racing D-Type, utilizing the same advanced monocoque body structure atop a tube frame. This was mated to a technically sophisticated suspension system and the now-iconic XK engine, resulting in a predictably rapid influx of orders, particularly within the American market.

In 1968, Jaguars flagship model underwent a minor revision, resulting in the Series 2 designation. Distinguishing features included open headlamps, upgraded cooling efficiency, and enhanced interior appointments. Fitted with the 4.2-litre version of the inline-six engine, the Series 2 E-Type is generally regarded as a sweet spot for the model, successfully pairing the aesthetic purity of preceding models with advancements in comfort, reliability, and practicality.

This stunning roadster, finished in blue with a Java leather interior, underwent a substantial ~£30,000 restoration in 2024. Originally imported from the US in 1989, it was professionally converted to RHD and is backed by over ~£50,000 in historical invoices. It has been under current ownership since 2013 and comes to market with a very sensible reserve.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting David the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As a designer I have always loved the elegantly sculpted lines and advanced engineering of the E-Type.

In 2009, I obtained this treasured Series II 4.2 Roadster from my close friend and fellow Jaguar enthusiast, Derek, who was leaving for business in Singapore. The arrangement was simple: provide clean, dry storage and, whenever the sun shone, take it out for a spin - a deal I was certainly happy to uphold.

In 2013, I purchased the E-Type from Derek's estate, adding it to my small classic collection. While we wished to take it to Australia to join our growing family, import regulations for classic vehicles made that option unfeasible, necessitating its sale.

David will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Subject to a ~£30K full body restoration in 2024, the car is in lovely condition.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” wire wheels are presentable with just mild signs of age on the rims and spinners.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon Turbospeed tyres, showing a spec of 205/70 - they are all over 20 years old but are in good shape with even tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of the Jaguar and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

There are no outstanding flaws on the body or underneath, free of dents or discernible corrosion. The panel fit is flush to the body, the doors open and close with ease, the bonnet is mildly misaligned on the right-hand side, and the boot strut springs will need replacement. The Jaguar's structure is solid, having undergone a full body restoration in 2024.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The blue paint is in excellent condition, having been professionally painted as part of its recent ~£30,000 restoration. It has consistent coverage with a pleasing lustre. We didn’t note any significant marks or road wear.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass and seals are all in good shape, with the correct trim for the model year. Some of chrome, such as the bumpers and headlamp bezels, have a light sheen of age, but nothing that would distract.

David highlighted the exceptional care the garage took, replacing the trim back onto the car to a high standard.

image

Interior

Carefully and tastefully renovated, the cabin has been meticulously looked after.

Seats and Carpets

The 'Java' with black piping leather seats are in excellent condition and are super comfy.

The carpeting and mats are clean and free of dampness.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard presents positively, with no significant signs of age. The padding, centre console, switches and dials all look good, with minor wear noted on some of the centre facia padding.

All of the controls are said to operate as they should.

The boot is tidy, and the door cards and headlining are in good shape.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The condition of the wooden steering wheel and gear lever finishes off an impressive cabin presentation.

image

Mechanics

An impressive history of maintenance adds confidence to the reliability of the inline-six engine.

Engine and Gearbox

David demonstrated the recognized cold-start procedure. The engine fired up instantly without hesitation or extraneous noise. It quickly achieved its natural smoothness and idled evenly once warm. All dashboard warning lights remained off. The initial exhaust showed minor soot with condensation, but remained smoke-free throughout our visit.

The engine is smartly presented, showing evidence of recent maintenance.

The gearbox was demonstrated to work well, with no issues with gear engagement and a well-weighted clutch.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension proved to be smooth and absorbent, free of any knocks or thuds.

The car brakes are effective, stopping and slowing the car without issues.

We noted a little brake squeal from the rear, which could be attributed to the pads.

image

The Drive

Famed for its comfortable and supple ride, the E-type seamlessly combines Jaguar’s traditional values with the legendary torque and acceleration of the inline-six XK engine.

David treated us to a long drive to demonstrate its ability to tackle suburban roads, showing its cruising and comfort. Dealing with the speed humps with ease, the car tackled those with no negative feedback. The steering remained composed throughout, with no reported play or knocking. We found a 50 mph stretch that demonstrated the E-Type's talent for cruising, managing the gentle curves and straights with confidence.

As the engine warmed up, the oil pressure and engine temperature remained in check, with no fluctuations. The engine became smoother with every passing mile and, once fully warmed up, was near silent on tick-over.

David has been satisfied with the car's overall reliability, its impressive maintenance history and indoor storage, providing confidence in its dependability.

image

Electrics and Other

The soft top is in excellent shape, with no significant marks. The rear screen is in good shape, and the roof lowers and raises with ease. The car has a hood cover and is fitted with a digital radio.

We didn't test all the electrical components in the car but David told us everything was working as far as he was aware.

History and Paperwork

Complete with a history back to 1989, there are over ~£50K worth of invoices.

This 1969 US-spec, RHD Series 2 Roadster is believed to have had only two owners before being imported into the UK in 1989 with approximately 50,000 recorded miles. The car comes with comprehensive post-1989 invoices, covering mechanical renovation (suspension, steering, engine, and brakes). Notable work includes new upholstery fitted in 2008 (£4,000) and a substantial body renovation by Surrey Car Craft completed in 2024 (£30,000).

The Jaguar's post-1989 history is diligently recorded by David in a summary which tallies up to over £50,000 in expenditure. Supporting documentation includes regular engine servicing receipts, sales invoices, records of overseas tours, MOT certificates extending back to 1990, previous V5 registration forms, and correspondence with its final US owner. The car is provided with two keys, its heritage certificate and an indoor car cover, and benefits from MOT and Road Tax exemption.

Please note that the car has been issued with an age-related number plate, but David has advised us that 100 PJ is on retention and will consider offers on it after the auction.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
