Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

An exceptionally restored and maintained example of one of the world's most desirable cars; the Jaguar E-Type.

The E-Type remains one of the world’s most recognisable sports cars, a legacy established at its 1961 unveiling. In its purest roadster form, the model is defined by a sleek waistline, sculptural lines, and exquisite detailing. It is a testament to an era of superior aesthetics and craftsmanship. While the original was a performance icon, the introduction of the 4.2-litre engine added newfound finesse and flexibility.

The Series 2 E-Type saw a total production run of ~18,808 units during its brief circa two-year lifespan, with the bulk of the production ending up in the US. Characterised by offering a more comfortable cabin, improved safety, upgraded trim, increased engine cooling and improved braking for greater usability without compromising the original's charm.

Coming from just under 5 years with our vendor, this 4.2 Roadster is finished in blue with a black leather interior. Formally part of a connoisseur’s collection and previously owned by a high-profile figure, the car features a documented restoration and tens of thousands of pounds in receipts from the last decade. It has done very few miles since its last service and is supplied with its Heritage Certificate and two keys.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Roger the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Exterior

The E-Type’s legendary silhouette is showcased through a flawless exterior, where every iconic curve is presented in breathtaking detail.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15” wire wheels and spinners are in smart condition, with a positive chrome lustre and no significant signs of age.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Avon Turbosport tyres showing a spec of 205/70. The tyres have no date code, suggesting they’re likely to be over 20 years old. They show signs of age on the sidewalls, but have plenty of legal tread. The car comes with a neat bespoke wood spinner remover.

Please take time to review the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior, wheels, and tyres so you can make your own assessment of their condition. Tyres are a key safety item, and you should consider replacing any that are cracked, perished, unevenly worn, or over 10 years old.

image

Bodywork

The exterior is in pristine condition, showing no significant blemishes or signs of wear. Body panels are flush with consistent gaps throughout. While the doors function correctly, the passenger door seals are quite firm, requiring a heavy hand to close. The boot lid springs are a little weak, but the bonnet remains faultless in both operation and alignment.

The underside is structurally sound, featuring a solid floorpan treated with protective inhibitor. Both the suspension mounts and jacking points are in good health with no noted defects. The engine bay, boot floor, and wheel wells are in excellent condition.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The paint finish has an excellent lustre and consistent coverage. We couldn’t find any paint flaws or any significant marks on the finish.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The windscreen shows some lamination damage, and there are minor chips visible along the upper edge of the passenger door glass. The seals are all in good shape.

The exterior trim is securely mounted, and free of pitting. The lights and lenses are clear and present very well. The bumpers complement the excellent exterior presentation; they are in immaculate condition, having been replaced in 2020 at a documented cost of £2,400.

image

Interior

The cabin is a masterclass in period elegance, presenting in beautiful condition.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in excellent shape with decent cushioning.

The carpets are cleanly presented and free of dampness.

The boot trim presentation suggests minimal use.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard and centre console are free of any signs of age, with no marks or significant wear noted on the padding, facia, switches, controls or dials. All are said to operate as they should.

Roger told us that the clock was recently replaced.

The door cards, headlining and trim are in excellent shape.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The cabin’s near-perfect presentation is finished by the wooden steering wheel and gear lever, both of which are in excellent condition.

image

Mechanics

Mechanically sound throughout, this car has also benefited from a carburettor upgrade, renewed clutch, suspension, and braking within the last 10 years.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine starts promptly with the use of the choke and maintains a smooth idle free of any abnormal noises. The exhaust smoke is minimal, showing only minor cold-start condensation, and the car remained leak-free throughout our visit. No warning lights are present on the dashboard.

The engine bay is in good order, featuring decent hoses and ancillaries despite minor age-related storage wear on some metal components. A significant mechanical upgrade was completed in 2019 at a cost of £4,500, which included the installation of a Triple 2” SU manual-choke carburettor, a new inlet manifold and the correct air filtration system.

The gearbox provides a smooth, mechanical feel with slick gear changes and a light, responsive clutch. The entire clutch assembly was fully renewed in 2016, which included a refaced flywheel and the installation of a new master cylinder.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension performs confidently, absorbing road imperfections without any negative feedback. All components are in good condition, following a comprehensive 2016 overhaul that included professional powder coating and electroplated treatments.

The braking system operates flawlessly, free of any judder or vibration. While the discs show minor surface ageing due to limited use, this is purely cosmetic and does not affect performance. The entire system benefited from a full overhaul in 2016.

The Drive

Many enthusiasts regard the 4.2-litre engine as the definitive choice for the E-Type, as it delivers increased torque, a more refined gearbox, and enhanced comfort compared to earlier iterations. The combination of this versatile engine and the fully synchronised 4-speed transmission makes the Series 2 well-suited for modern traffic and long-distance cruising.

The E-Type’s signature balance of compliance and agility is fully evident in this example. The steering is precise, and the car corners quietly without any feedback or noise from the wheels. The engine pulls smoothly across the range, accompanied by a refined mechanical note and a purposeful exhaust growl.

During the drive on 40 mph roads, the car performed flawlessly and maintained a steady operating temperature throughout.

Roger reports excellent reliability throughout his ownership, with no issues regarding oil pressure or engine temperature. The engine's vital signs are reassuring: oil pressure registers at 30 psi on start-up, increases to 45 psi at idle, and maintains a steady 40 psi while in motion. These consistent readings serve as a strong indicator of robust mechanical health.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn't test all electrics during our visit but Roger told us that everything was working, as far as he is aware.

The mohair hood is in excellent condition; it lowers and raises with ease and fits with a tight seal.

History and Paperwork

The vehicle has undergone an extensive, high-standard restoration of both the bodywork and mechanical systems.

This 1970 model year Series 2 E-Type roadster was originally a US-export model delivered to New York. Following its return to the UK in 1990, the car underwent a documented restoration. In 2000, it was acquired by the renowned inventor Trevor Baylis, the braking and suspension systems received a comprehensive overhaul by The Jagshop in 2016.

Further mechanical work was completed in 2019 by The Jagshop at a cost of nearly £10,000. The current owner, Roger, purchased the car from a specialist dealer in 2021 for his private collection. The vehicle was last serviced in late 2023 and is accompanied by its Heritage Certificate, a Haynes manual, and two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
