Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The final phase of the E-Type, this late Series 3 Roadster benefits from a complete rebuild and a pampered life.

Production of the E-Type came to an end in June 1974, making this example one of the last of the Series 3's. The final phase of the E-Type featured a brand new 5.3L V12 developing ~266BHP which was designed and developed by Walter Hassan and Harry Mundy, originally intended for the would-be Le Mans Challenger, the XJ13.

This is a concours show winner, not just once... but on thirteen occasions. The car was completely rebuilt by John over a two year period and treasured for the past twenty two. John and his late wife loved a day out in the car, they were often found at Jaguar member clubs and shows around the country on the weekends. Coming to market from 22 years ownership in which time it was restored to this show winning standard, if you're in the market for a Series 3 E-Type roadster, look no further.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting John the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I carried out a complete rebuild of the engine and shortly after it became a concours winner at Jaguar Owners Club.

John reports buying the Roadster around 25 years ago after selling his 2+2 fixed head example, as he always fancied a convertible. Over his ownership, he has taken the car to many classic shows, including the Jaguar Owners club where it became a concours winning car. When John first purchased the car it had been dry stored and not used for over 14 years, he carried out a complete rebuild which took over 2 years and the work carried out can be seen in the photos below.

He changed the original wheels which are still present, to classic spoke wheels, and now John is 88 he mentions it's time for someone else to share the fun and experience he has had while owning this Jaguar E-Type. He'll be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A car that never fails to get attention, generous sweeping curves in all the right places and this in show winning standard.

Wheels and Tyres

During the restoration, John opted for classic wire wheels with Jaguar spinners. As you would expect from a show winner, the wheels appear in excellent condition with no areas of concern. John even made a custom spinner removal block from wood, to prevent any damage on removal.

The chrome wire wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P4000s, all dated 2000, in line with restoration while showing lots of tread on our visit. The car is also being sold with its original steel wheels. Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at this Roadster's wheels.

Bodywork

All the panel gaps look tight and correct when observing the car. John reports having a brass grille manufactured which he had chromed during the restoration.

The underside looks in great condition too due to the dry storage of the car, this can be seen in the mechanical photos. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a classic "Signal Red" paint which looks excellent, an iconic choice that pairs well with the black leather interior, tonneau cover and brightwork. Overall the paint is even in finish and colour across all the panels.

If we were being really picky, we did notice the smallest paint drip on the rear offside arch. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass looks in line with the restoration, age and mileage i.e excellent condition across the car, along with the trim. All the window rubbers and seals appear tight with no obvious signs of wear or degradation.

John has fitted a wind break, to make faster and longer journeys with the roof down even more pleasant. A black tonneau cover is also included in the sale of the car.

Interior

An interior that will whisp you off your feet and back to the '70s - a fantastic place to be.

Seats and Carpets

The seats are in excellent condition and have retained firmness with only the slightest creasing to the driver's seat. The carpets are in great shape, with the headlining and door cards.

Take a look at the interior photos and videos to get a view of the custom sill covers, a very nice touch in this show winning car.

Dashboard

The dashboard is free from wear, with no cracks or damage, and in line with the mileage and condition of the rest of the interior. The dials, switches and controls are all in good condition, all are said to function without fault.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The car is fitted with its original E-Type black leather steering wheel with alloy touches and automatic gear select which show signs of use, however still appear in great condition today. Take a look at the video review to see the detail.

Mechanics

Treated to a complete rebuild by John, it's helped the engine in this Big Cat retain its silky smooth characteristics.

Engine and Gearbox

The final phase of the E-Type featured a new 5.3L V12 developing ~266BHP which was designed and developed Walter Hassan and Harry Mundy, originally intended for the would-be Le Mans Challenger, the XJ13.

John originally began the restoration by rebuilding the engine after the car had been sitting for around 15 years. Once he had the engine out, he decided to rebuild the whole car, a full 2-year restoration.

He reports that the car starts from cold with no issues and drives well with its smooth automatic gearbox powering the wheels. Take a look at the mechanical video to see the car starting from cold, driving around, and for a closer look underneath.

Suspension and Brakes

The components have seen a renovation, so as expected the running gear is in excellent condition. You'll see in the history and paperwork gallery that the suspension was restored and renewed as necessary in the rebuild.

On the road, no outstanding concerns were evident, John reports smooth journies in the Roadster with the braking system performing well, with no evidence of binding or juddering.

The Drive

The V12 in a Series 3 offers impressive torque and speed, and silky smooth running for cruising speeds without breaking a sweat. If you're in the market for a luxury classic roadster, this E-Type S3 is the car for you. Ready for classic shows this summer.

Electrics and Other

The car is fitted with various electrical features, such as an immobiliser, uprated pioneer stereo and dual USB/12v sockets.

John reports all the electrics on this car are working as they should to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

A concours winner, dry stored, rebuilt, late V12, this UK RHD Jaguar E-Type Roadster is simply stunning and just wanting for a new owner to enjoy.

A thorough restoration was carried out on this Jaguar E-Type S3 Roadster across 2 years in the early 2000's. Coming to auction with effectively just 3 former keepers (5 registered as the car was initially logged under a company, then John's late wife and now him), with the current custodian owning it for ~22 years. This E-Type has really been taken care of since being in John's ownership. Take a look below to see all the previous work carried out in this completely restored example.

John will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.
