Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

One of the rarest and most desirable series production E-types - the V12 Commemorative.

This exclusive E-type offered is just 1 of 50 special roadsters made to commemorate the end of the models production in 1974.

These special 50 cars can be identified by the chassis number sequence which starts at '2822' and ends with '2872', with this model being '2851'. All except 1 of the 50 cars were finished in a stunning deep black with cinnamon leather interior, the latter was painted green.

Powered by Jaguars beautifully smooth 5343cc SOHC V12, this example is 1 of 19 fitted with a three-speed automatic transmission and promised a top speed of 148mph.

This is the rarest series production E-type that's long prized by collectors all over the globe. History is abundant with this particular example as it took part in the E-type's 50th Anniversary Run from Coventry to Genére in March 2011, and shortly after was purchased by a private collector, Sean, the current owner.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Adam after talking to Sean the owner - photography by Paschal Brooks.

Meet the owner

I searched for years to find a Commemorative and once found I made sure I appointed the very best craftsmen at Eagle to make it the best it could be.

Sean is the owner of this exclusive E-type that he purchased back in 2013 from Eagle E-types. Most of you will already heard of Eagle as they are considered one of the best builders and restores of E-types - they source, service and restore the most sort after E-types in the world.

After Sean's purchase, he commissioned Eagle to do a full bare metal restoration of the Commemorative costing circa £85k. Please take a look at the invoices below to see all the extensive work carried out.

During the seven years of Sean's ownership he's only driven circa 4,500 miles; each one carefully but most importantly enjoyably. The car spends most of its time stored among Sean's collection. During the time of restoration, Sean requested an affidavit from Eagle which reports the mileage is correct and currently it sits at 12,769.

The car spent the majority of its life in Germany with an avid collector between '84 to '05.

Sean contacted us here at Trade Classics to handle the sale of this very collectible automobile and has set a very competitive reserve price giving the car an excellent chance of finding a new collector. Sean is more than happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

A beautiful black finish to end the production of the all-time great sports cars and arguably the most important Jaguar ever made.

Wheels and Tyres

The car has received new wire wheels during its time at Eagle and they are shown here in excellent condition, as you would expect.

For the detailed focussed collectors, you'll notice the wheel spinners are not original - these were changed by Eagle and it's an easy modification to put back to original if you wish.

Each wheel is wrapped in Pirelli P400 touring all-season tyres, each one looks in very good condition.

Bodywork

The paint is simply exceptional - but it's only natural after being in the hands of such a well respected and specialist company; Eagle.

Eagle started by stripping the hardtop and all the exterior back to full metal, removing the soft top, glass, brightwork, interior trim, exhaust, doors, door catches and the list continues. The bonnet was also fully dismantled to enable the repaint of the inside. For reference, the front bulkhead, engine bay and front suspension are original.

All of this specialist work including new paintwork and reassembling came to a total of £80,684.00 including VAT. Re-chroming and various other touches increased this total to circa £85,000.

And eight years on since the restoration, Sean has managed to keep the whole car in excellent condition, which you can see from the photographs we've recently taken.

Paint

49 out of 50 Commemoratives we're finished in this deep glossy black which pairs very nicely with the sophisticated cinnamon leather interior.

Likewise, with the rest of the car, the paint is in excellent condition with no issues to point out, even in coverage and colour across each panel with a deep shine that we know will take E-Type enthusiast breath away.

This is an extremely desirable and collectible car and Sean knew to preserve the value and authenticity it needed a specialist firm to action any work - hence choosing Eagle.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a closer look at the exterior.

Glass and Trim

During the restoration the front and rear bumpers and overrides were re-chromed along with the front grille surround and the headlamp 'eyebrows', the hardtop rear window surround was also re-chromed.

As you can see from the photos, the brightwork looks exemplary, with no pitting or areas of concern, the glass tells a similar story, very nicely presented with no cracks, chips or damage to note.

Please take a look at the photos and videos to see for yourself - collector quality throughout.

Interior

Cinnamon leather interior and black trim offers timeless good looks and elegance, like never before.

Seats and Carpets

Sean reports that the seat base cushions were replaced along with new seat belts and other sundry repairs.

We noticed some very minor creases that can be seen from the images - this is on purpose as to not over-restore the car and subsequently lose it's originality. The seats are excellent and the carpets likewise, the cabin of this E-Type is a very elegant place to be.

Sean reports the convertible hood had two small tears while taking photos, however, these have now been professionally repaired, and a good used spare is included within the sale (supplied by Eagle E-Types).

Dashboard

The dashboard is also in excellent condition - almost like the day it was made.

All the dials, gauges, switches and controls appear in clear, visible and undamaged condition. All the lettering is clear and legible and Sean reports everything is working as it should. What an incredible piece of engineering history.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

Of course the original Jaguar steering wheel and automatic gear stick are present, looking in excellent condition and inline with the rest of the condition of the car.

Please take a look at the interior videos for a detailed tour.

Mechanics

It doesn't get more exclusive than this - 1 out of 19 automatic E-Type Commemoratives ever made, taking you to 60mph in just 6.4s.

Engine and Gearbox

Powered by Jaguar's silky smooth 5343cc SOHC V12 coupled to a 3-speed auto, this E-Type promised a nigh-on 150mph top speed in 6.4s - incredible for the '70s and still to this day.

Sean reports the car had the following work completed: oil leaks on engine were repaired between the cam housing & cylinder head, together with valve adjustment. And since taking delivery of the full bare metal completed restoration, Sean has carried out all the maintenance himself, to a very high standard.

The engine and chassis show matching numbers with a certificate from Jaguar heritage to certify this, Sean reports there is only one modification to the engine - the engine air injection system was deleted by Eagle, which none of the early Series 3 E-Types had fitted, and it wasn't until 1973 it became mandatory to satisfy US regulations.

Please watch the mechanical video to see the car running smoothly along with a detailed tour of the engine bay.

Suspension and Brakes

Sean reports the rear suspension has had the following carried out: repair oil leaks, re-finish subframe and replace both wheel bearings.

Sean also reports the car driving very well, with the suspension offering a very smooth and enjoyable ride with the brakes system offering safe and prompt stopping power.

The Drive

Sean reports an excellent drive in the E-type V12 Commemorative, it's a car that wants to be driven but also belongs in a collection.

Sean has only put 4,500 miles on the Commemorative since 2013 and loves getting it out on special occasions. He reports no issues with the temperature and mentions the oil pressure is solid.

Electrics and Other

We're assured that everything on the car works as expected, including all the electrical systems, dials, gauges and clocks.

The car took part in the E-type 50th Anniversary Run from Coventry to Genéve in March 2011.

History and Paperwork

This stunning Commemorative E-Type is a real piece of automotive history - yes it may belong in a museum, but it also begs to be driven and enjoyed - a Commemorative conundrum for sure.

Sean reports the car is all original except for three small modifications: upgraded cooling fans, wire wheels and the air injection system delete as previously mentioned.

Please see pictures of the VIN plate and chassis stamp that has matching numbers with the Jaguar Heritage Certificate. The certificate also notes this car took part in the E-type 50th Anniversary Run from Coventry to Genéve in March 2011.

The car located and registered in the Republic of Ireland (RoI), however Sean says the car is also registered as exported with the DVLA, and on its return trip to the UK then it can be reunited with the original registration number.

---------------- Seller & Vehicle Validation

We've actioned our usual checks which include:
- We've seen / hold a copy of the registration document that is in name of seller and the address matches a utility bill.
- We've seen / hold a Photo ID of the seller with a name that matches the registration document.
- HPi check on the car for outstanding finance an / or insurance claim - all clear.

---------------- Are you in the UK?

This vehicle is located / registered in the Republic of Ireland (RoI), a EU member state, and as such if you are planning to import the car to the UK then it's most likely international rules will apply, e.g. like importing a car from the USA. We expect you'd benefit from a VAT reduction to circa 5%, as the car is over 30 years old, and also a reduced Customs Duty liability to just circa £50, as the car was originally manufactured in the UK. However, this is our understanding and the information is not warranted, as such we strongly advise you to contact HRMC to confirm the accuracy of this information and your own liabilities before placing a bid.

---------------- Are you in the EU?

This vehicle is located / registered in the Republic of Ireland (RoI), a EU member state, and as such if you are based in another EU member state, e.g. France, Germany or Spain, then the rules for importing to your EU country should remain the same post the UK leaving the EU on the 1st January 2020, and as such you will benefit from reduced VAT and Customs Duty. We expect there will be no Customs Duty percentage to pay (due to the free movement of goods), and no VAT percentage to pay either - this is because VAT would have been paid in the country of origin on its original purchase. However, this is our understanding and the information is not warranted, as such we strongly advise you to check with your own local governmental authority to confirm the accuracy of this information before placing a bid.
