Introduction

Matt Nolan
Professional Consigner

The last of the old-school Jaguars, they have a huge cult following and the stock of the XJS has been rising steadily over time.

Development for the XJS started in the late 60’s and, when it became available in 1975, a 21-year production run began that made it Jaguars longest running model. As the successor to the E-Type the XJ-S had a tough act to follow but Jaguar didn’t play safe, using aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer to pen the initial design. One of the first designers to apply aerodynamic principles to mainstream production cars, Sayer died tragically in 1970 and the design mantle was picked up by Jaguars in house team.

The car was launched with a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine before Jaguar announced the 5.3L V12 in 1985; outputting impressive figures of ~291BHP.

This car comes fresh to auction from a collection of Jaguars, and having been in family for the past ~25 years. It's finished in a rare period colour of "Coronet Gold" with black leather interior,

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Matt after meeting Daniel the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

~25 years of family ownership and maintenance with the same Jaguar Specialist, this car has quite the history file to go with it's low mileage.

Daniel and his late father both members of the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, really appreciated an XJS. They thought it was the sleekest design that Jaguar had ever made. Daniel tells us "We had been looking for a 5.3 in gold for some years. We were delighted to learn that the owner of Mistermatic Jaguar in Swansea was selling his. We went to see the car and we just had to have it".

Thankfully there have been no major repairs/works needed on this car. The exhaust had a new back box in 2018, an alternator repair in 2013, and some minor paint jobs have been carried out. The car has been serviced annually since 1997 by Mistermatic Jaguar and the owner always showed great interest in the car.

Daniel now owns 6 classic Jaguars, and although he loves them, feels he isn't spending enough time driving and enjoying this one and so it comes to market for auction. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Exterior

The XJS was seen as a bold step in design, one that has definitely matured with time with an increase in appreciation.

Wheels and Tyres

The 15" alloy wheels look really good all-around on this example, just a few areas of age-related marks.

They are wrapped in Pirelli P600s on each corner, the tyres look in good condition, although the last MOT mentions the tread depth on some is getting close to needing changing.

Bodywork

Shut lines appear good, panels do not appear to have any obvious distortion and the doors, boot and bonnet open and close properly.

Overall, the car looks good, when getting really close though we did notice a small dent on the front splitter, on the rear bumper, and a small area of bubbling near the fuel cap.

We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a very attractive and unusual "Coronet Gold", this car is all 80s.

The paint looks even in finish and colour across all the panels from our observation. Daniel reports several panels have been professionally resprayed over it's life. We did notice some marks down the nearside panels which look like they would polish out, it does has nicks to the leading edges on a number of panels along with stone chips to the front that come with age.

Again, please take time to review all the images and videos showing the paint from different angles and reflections, to assess the condition for yourselves.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim around the car appears in good condition with no obvious signs of pitting. The glass looks great with no signs of cracks, chips or discolouration.

The car also has decals along the sides in a light silver colour, these show age related wear. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed tour.

Interior

The passengers were not forgotten when designing this high-performance GT, you'll find nothing but luxury within this cabin.

Seats and Carpets

Comfortable black leather seats adorn this XJS cabin. They appear in good condition, no major wear, but do definitely show their age as pictured.

The carpet looks good, along with the door cards, but the headlining has seen better days and so has been pinned to prevent it sagging, take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view.

Dashboard

The top of the dashboard is in very good condition, in line with the low mileage - this car has been looked after over the years.

The wood veneer dash also looks great across the interior and gives the interior a luxurious touch. The dials, switches and controls are in good condition, and all are said to be functional.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A classic 2-spoke XJS steering wheel looks in great condition, along with the automatic gear selector within this luxurious '80s cabin.

Mechanics

The redesigned V12 delivers ~291BHP to the rear wheels through the smooth automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

This car has been subject to specialist services with Mistermatic since 1997, just what you want to see with a V12. The last major service was ~100 miles ago at the end of 2020.

The engine bay is presented in a smart condition. We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view under and around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the clean mechanics.

Suspension and Brakes

The car has seen very little use over Daniel's ownership due to owning 6 other classic Jaguars, barely covering ~2,000 miles over 13 years. Daniel reports the brakes work well, and the ride is comfortable with no unusual knocks or noises noted.

The Drive

A smooth and powerful high efficiency V12 upfront, the drive on this grand tourer is all about sitting back in luxury and enjoying the car cruise along.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics on the car are said to be working, including the lighting and locking systems.

Daniel mentions the A/C could do with being re-gassed.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~25 years of ownership, this V12 XJS coupe in a rare period colour presents a potentially great value acquisition.

The car comes with a good amount of provenance over its lifetime, with servicing carried out by Mistermatic Jaguar Services since 1997. Daniel has covered very little miles over the past 13 years of his ownership, yet he has not skimped on maintenance. Take a look at the history files in the media pack for a detailed view of the work carried out.

Daniel will be happy to answer any questions you may have in the comments below.

Also are the jacking points solid with no rust?

Hi, have you done anything to the exhausts? Maybe it’s just the video but I’ve never know the Jag V12 to be that noisy. It seems you are based around South Wales, I’m in Cardiff, can I see the car please?
