Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

Around 8 years after the launch of the XJS Jaguar released the XJ-SC in 1983, featuring a Targa style roof with folding rear section.

After another 5 years a proper convertible version of the XJS was made available which replaced the XJ-SC. With the introduction of the XJ-SC a new engine was available; the 3.6L straight-six. The straight-six was the only engine available for the first couple of years of the XJ-SC's production run. The 5.3L V12 version did make it to market in 1985.

This particular car is the later V12, it comes to market with only ~37,000 on the clock, with plenty of provenance and paperwork to back it up including 21 service records and MOT history to verify mileage. It is coming to market from a private collection of low mileage Jaguar and other British classics, and recent work in July 2022 to this XJ-SC includes; a complete engine, ignition, A/C and braking system service at a cost of £2,174, with the car being in storage since. The car comes to market with just 1 previous owner, 2 registered when transferred from company to private ownership, you'll be hard pressed to find an example like this.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Heritage Classics who are handling the sale for a private collector.

The long bonnet and rear are a trademark of the XJS, this example with the targa top style roof and folding rear windscreen.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 5-spoke wheels all looked in great shape, and give the car a much sportier look than the more common lattice design you see on an early SJX. We did notice some scuff marks on the driver side rear and passenger side front wheel around the edge of the rim.

The XJ-SC had a matching set of Pirelli P4000 tyre all round, the tyres looked in good condition, they seemed to be quite old as you might expect on a low mileage example coming from a collection, but we didn't notice any perishing in any of the rubber. The tyres looked to have a decent amount of life left in them too. Please have a look at the photos and video below to asses the condition of the wheels and tyres for yourself.

The bodywork looked to be very straight, panels lined up well with gaps being tight. We did notice a small dent in the middle of the bonnet, possible caused by something sitting on the engine then the bonnet being closed. You will be able to see this dent in the photos and video below.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

The paint looked in good condition around the car, the car still in the original Jaguar colour of "Claret", a colour you don't see very often. One thing to note, we did notice a small area above the rear passenger side wheel arch where the paint appeared to show signs of cracking, we don't believe it is a major issue though. We didn't observe any swirls or scratches in the paint, what you'd probably expect given the low mileage and fact that this car comes from a private collection.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Glass around the car looked in great condition, we didn't notice any discolouration, chips or cracks around the glass in the car.

The chrome trim around the car looked in good condition too, the rubber bumper areas did move slightly but again, nothing major. The roof also looked in great condition, the rear window did look slightly frosted but that was due to the low temperature.

Please view the photos and video below to review the condition of the glass and trim for yourself.

The leather seats, wood trimmed dashboard and stylish Moto-Lita steering wheel give this car a luxurious feel.

Seats and Carpets

The "Doeskin" leather seats looked in great condition, showing very little signs of wear, in line with the low recorded mileage. The carpets also looked to be in great condition too, we didn't notice any stains on the carpets. We did notice a slightly saggy area in the roof lining above the passenger seat.

Please take a look at the photos and video below to decide on the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

The classy wooden dashboard was in great condition too, everything is said to be original and present including the radio. The clocks on the dash were all functioning as expected with no needle shake.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The three pronged metal steering wheel with wooden rim looked in great condition, showing very little wear.

The gear selector looked in great condition too, the lever did show some slight signs of wear. Please take a look at the photos and video below to check the condition of the steering wheel and gear stick for yourself.

With a silky smooth 5.3L V12 under the bonnet, this example having had a major service and works in July 2022.

Engine and Gearbox

The engine fired up first time with no issues. On the road the power delivery was smooth, we didn't notice any unwanted noises either. The engine note also sounded great. The automatic gearbox shifted smoothly too, we didn't notice any shuddering from the gearbox at all.

Please take a look at the cold start video below to see for yourself the performance of the engine and gearbox.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension handled all the bumps of the road with ease, we didn't notice any knocking from the suspension either. The XJ-SC has a very comfortable ride.

Brakes felt sharp, we didn't give them a proper test due to the cold temperature but there was no pulling on the steering wheel under braking. Please take a look at the on the road video below to see how the suspension and brakes performed.

The Drive

On the road the XJ-SC felt very composed, we only noticed a slight creak coming from the seat, no unwanted noises coming from any of the mechanical parts. The car felt very smooth on our drive, a luxurious place to be. The V12 gives off a great noise and plenty power, delivered with ease.

To see the car in motion please take a look at the on the road video below.

Electrics and Other

Whilst in the car we had a quick play with the radio and it worked as expected, all dials and lights seemed to be working too. We've been assured all the other electric functions are working too to the vendors knowledge.

History and Paperwork

An investment quality car, with all the paperwork and provenance including 21 main dealer stamps to verify the low mileage and low ownership.

With 21 main dealer services up to 17,000 miles then it has been looked after by 9 Eleven Porsche specialists, this XJ-SC really has been well looked after. As mentioned above the engine, ignition, A/C and braking system have all been given an overhaul recently in July 2022. There's also a huge file with all work carried out over the last 20 years, with a total spend of over £5,000. Every MOT issued for the car is in the file too, tracking the low mileage.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.
