Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

The product of JaguarSport - the XJR-S was the ultimate performance variant of the classic grand tourer.

Produced as a collaboration between Jaguar and TWR, the XJR-S was a hardcore expression of the classic XJS grand tourer, offered initially with a 5.3L HE V12 configuration. The car was manufactured and intended to capitalise on Jaguar's recent victories, winning the Le Mans for the sixth year in a row and it's new World Sportscar Championship title in 1987.

An XJR-S can be visually distinguished from its drag-reducing body kit, matt black radiator grille, and special Speedline alloys. As well as visual queues, the car benefited from many performance upgrades in the form of revised suspension (uprated front springs, modified rear radius arms, re-valved Bilstein shock absorbers) and focused power-assisted steering.

This example coming to market is one of 226 produced featuring the 5.3L V12 finished in "Signal Red", coming to market from 3 years ownership, and family ownership from new before that. With ~29,000 miles on the clock and a great amount of service history, this should attract enthusiasts and collectors alike.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Kevin the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

This XJR-S has lived a pampered life, and only covered a mere ~29,000 miles, part of a matching pair with an XJR my friend owned.

Kevin has been the registered owner of this XJRS for the previous 3 years, it was left to him by a dear friend who is said to have owned the car since new (registering with his company first) and kept it in a heated garage all of its life. He reports the friend's partner had an XJR and they enjoyed many road trips together.

He has really enjoyed ownership of this XJR-S although not using it that much and recently purchasing a classic SL350, he has decided to bring the car to auction and pass it to a like-minded enthusiast. He will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the questions below.

Exterior

Retaining the XJS' graceful lines with the addition of the TWR performance body kit, bespoke alloys and aerodynamic rear spolier.

Wheels and Tyres

The original Jaguar/TWR sportline wheels made especially for the XJR-S are fitted including a full size spare, all of which look in great condition. They have the slightest signs of curbing and reaction around the edges of the rim.

The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P600's dated between 2005-2006 all round, take a closer look at the photos and videos for a detailed view, we personally love the classic look the early model specific wheels give.

Bodywork

The shut lines appear straight and tight on this special Jaguar, just as you would expect given the ownership and mileage. The doors, bonnet, and boot all open and close cleanly and precisely.

Kevin tells us his friend stored the car in a heated garage, this coupled with the low mileage explains why we didn't observe any corrosion, the only thing to note was a tiny crack to the rear offside bumper.

All in, a very tidy and highly original Jaguar. We have taken hi-resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Signal Red" the colour of the car looks great on this rare XJR-S. Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout.

When getting very close we did notice the slightest signs of stone chips to the front of the car, and a small scratch to the spoiler. The images taken are from different angles and reflections to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. Please take the time to fully assess the condition.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks in great condition and we believe it's original - all being stamped Triplex. We didn't notice any discolouration during our visit. The window seals look good too and are in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

Lavishly equipped and luxuriously trimmed, what else would you expect from a top-of-the-line model from Jaguar.

Seats and Carpets

The cream leather seats with red piping are in very good condition showing only minor wear to the bolsters on the driver’s seat. We love the XJR-S embossed in the headrest on these early examples.

The carpets, headlining, and door cards appear in great condition in line with the age and mileage of the car overall a smartly presented interior.

Dashboard

Clear, legiable instruments are set in the dashboard of this sporty XJR-S, making it feel like a serious performance-focused grand tourer. The wood is in good condition with only minor, age related, cracking to the centre console.

View the photo gallery to see the dashboard and centre console condition.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A cream leather steering wheel and gearstick, with a Jaguar emblem inset into the steering wheel. Both items appear in good condition with some slight signs of use.

Mechanics

Utilising the same smooth 5343CC SOHC engine and automatic transmission from the XJS, it's capable of ~150MPH.

Engine and Gearbox

The Jaguar is fitted with the high-efficiency V12 5.3L, with Lucas-Bosch Digital EFI SOHC and a "May-fireball" high compression head. The V12 offers the driver ~286BHP to tap into.

We've captured a detailed mechanical video that shows the car out on the road and a view under and around the engine bay. Please take a look at the detailed media pack to see a closer view of the clean mechanics.

Suspension and Brakes

The XJR-S received performance revision in the form of revised suspension (uprated front springs, modified rear radius arms, re-valved Bilstein shock absorbers) and more focused power-assisted steering.

Kevin mentions the brakes and suspension provide an enjoyable journey with the kind of stopping power and handling you'd expect from a classic Jaguar of this era.

The Drive

A sports-focused performance drive is always offered in the mighty V12 powered XJR-S. It is a hardcore expression of the classic XJS grand tourer with motorsport input by the TWR group.

Electrics and Other

Kevin reports that to his knowledge all of the electrics are functional and operational, in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

History and Paperwork

A rare and limited run, the XJR-S was created to celebrate Jaguar's sixth Le Mans victory, this low ownership and low mileage example is stunning.

A genuine and highly original "Signal Red" Jaguar XJR-S had spent the majority of it's life in a heated garage and was said to be with the original owner until just 3 years ago, whereby his good friend Kevin took over ownership. The car was in the same family from new, 2 owners recorded with the DVLA due to a change from company to private ownership, and just ~29,000 miles covered. Take a look at the history and paperwork for a view of all the previous MOTs and service work carried out.

Kevin will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the car in the comments below.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

Hi Kevin
A few of Q’s I need to ask before bidding:-
1. Is the paintwork original or has the car been resprayed / touched-up?
2. The underneath looks solid on the video but the pre-1991 cars were prone to rust. What is the situation underneath?
3. The odometer issue looks like it was some kind of mistake at the MOT, can you shed any light on that?
Many thanks,
Steve.

Hello Kevin.
It looks like you have a lovely car.
Just a couple of questions

Is there any obvious work that may need doing to the car, both cosmetic or mechanical?

What is the reason for seller after short ownership?

Regards

Richard Barnfather.
