Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner

From the design minds in Jaguar Sport's performance division came the XJR-S, each car was hand finished which made this car their signature product at the time, a true classic.

Produced by Jaguar Sport, a separate company owned jointly by Jaguar and TWR, the XJR-S was a hardcore expression of the classic XJS grand tourer, offered initially with a 5.3L HE V12 configuration. The car was manufactured and intended to capitalise on Jaguar's recent victories, winning the Le Mans for the sixth year in a row and it's new World Sportscar Championship title in 1987.

An XJR-S can be visually distinguished from its drag-reducing body kit, matt black trim, and special Speedline alloys. As well as visual queues, the car benefited from many performance upgrades in the form of revised suspension (uprated front springs, modified rear radius arms, re-valved Bilstein shock absorbers) and focused power-assisted steering.

This example coming to market is one of 226 produced featuring the 5.3L V12 finished in "Signal Red" and with just ~28,785 miles on the clock and a great amount of service history, this should attract enthusiasts and collectors alike.

This listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Richard the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

As a fan of collectible cars, I had the opportunity to own this rare one which was an offer I just couldn't turn down.

The current owner, Richard, saw the car for sale and had to have it as part of his expanding collection. Richard has owned the car for just over a year and has kept it as original as possible to preserve its heritage - he told us that he likes his cars original and factory preserved as much as possible.

The more Richard has purchased over the years, the more space has shrunk in the garage! The reason for sale is that Richard is slimming down his car collection a little - he's bought a fair few cars over recent years and now needs to free up a little more room.

Should any questions be required, Richard will be able to answer any you may have about the car in the questions below.

Exterior

To set it apart from a normal XJS, an aggressive body kit was fitted to the XJR-S, accompanied by stylish curves, bespoke performance wheels and a rear spoiler.

Wheels and Tyres

The original 15" Jaguar / TWR sportline wheels made especially for the XJR-S look in good condition with only minor marks and reaction around the edges of the rim. Overall though, these complemented the originality of the car well.

Equipped with a set of Pirelli P600 tyres, the spec on these shows as 235/60 to the front and rear. Front and rear tyres are date coded from 2005.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this Jaguar and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands level, shut lines look great and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors, boot, and bonnet open and close well, exactly as you would expect from a car of this quality. We noted no dings or major areas of concern when looking over the car.

All in all, a very tidy and highly original Jaguar.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in "Signal Red" and arguably the colour that best suits this car.

Each panel presents a deep lustre along with even coverage and colour throughout, but it's not surprising as Richard commissioned a respray of the car during his ownership.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in very good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the main glass sections.

The seals, badges and light sections to the front and rear look good too around the exterior, and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Interior

With comfortably styled cream leather seats, corresponding red piping and wood finish dash area, the cabin of the XJR-S is a beautifully crafted and original example.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are finished in a lovely cream colour with red edge piping. All the seats in the car look to be in good condition showing only minor wear to the bolsters on the driver’s seat.

A nice touch to the seating was the XJR-S emblem embossed in the headrest of these early examples.

Looking over the carpet sections, the mats showed to be in good condition, and looking underneath, the main floor sections showed without concern. In the rest of the cabin area, headlining and door cards appear in good condition too.

We've captured high-resolution photos and a full interior video tour through the car. This covers off the angles inside the car for you to review and appreciate the condition of what's on offer here in our interior review section.

Dashboard

The clean black dash appears in good shape with no issues or scratches to report. The top of the dash presents well and without splits or cracking to this section.

Mileage counter showed with ~28,785 miles at the time of our visit.

The wood finish in the dash area is in good condition with only minor, age related, cracking to the centre console.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the speedometer, water temperature, oil temp, fuel gauge, water gauge, amp power and rev counter were all functioning without concern when out on the road.

Please take a look at the gallery images for a closer look at the interior sections.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

A well presented 2-spoke cream leather bound wheel shows in good condition with some slight signs of use.

The same can be said for the auto gear selector which shows no visible signs of major wear, and presents in good condition also.

The handbrake is located next to the drivers seat edge which looked in good condition too.

We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

With a forged steel crankshaft, forged alloy pistons, modified air intake and a dual exhaust system, the Jaguar updated engine was unique to the XJR-S.

Engine and Gearbox

The Jaguar is fitted with the high-efficiency V12 5.3L, with Lucas-Bosch Digital EFI SOHC and a "May-fireball" high compression head.

Starting the car up from cold showed no issues and it drives without concern with its automatic gearbox powering the car nicely.

The Jaguar functions very well and goes through the motions without any struggle. We took the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the XJR-S, take a look at the the mechanical review video to see the detail and the car in action.

Suspension and Brakes

The XJR-S received performance revision in the form of revised suspension (uprated front springs, modified rear radius arms, re-valved Bilstein shock absorbers) and more focused power-assisted steering. On the drive out, Richard took us around some local roads, we heard no unwanted knocks, bangs or noises from the suspension - it provided an enjoyable journey.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop without a problem and with the kind of stopping power you'd expect, with discs all round.

The Drive

A true head turner that stands out from the crowd with sleek lines, curves and styling. This charismatic, great-handling luxury tourer, is a real rarity with only very few ever being produced.

Overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues - please watch the On the Road video to see the car perform on a short drive.

Electrics and Other

The XJR-S is equipped with a Jaguar cassette stereo system, Jaguar on board trip computer with illuminated green buttons, speed control and cabin fan system. Also featured in the car are electric front windows, adjustable lumbar support and heated, electronic front seats.

There is a tool kit and jack located in the boot along with a spare wheel. Richard told us that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

These Jaguar's are considerably rare cars and this one benefits from a recent MOT valid until July 2024, just ~28,785 miles on the clock and 3 previous owners.

A lovely XJR-S that we are told has spent the majority of it's previous life in a heated garage and was said to be with the original owner until just ~4 years ago. The car was in the same family from new, 3 owners recorded with the DVLA due to a change from company to private ownership, and under ~29,000 miles covered so far.

Take a look at the history and paperwork for a view of all the previous MOTs and service work carried out.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house. This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding with more info in our terms and conditions.
