Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

Taking over the iconic E-Type, the XJS maintains the luxury racing heritage of Jaguar.

The XJS is a luxury grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to 1996 - it was based on the XJ saloon platform and was noted for the unique prominent rear flying buttresses with early styling drawn by Jaguar's best aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer. While this modern classic remains remarkable value for money they are quickly appreciating, especially convertibles, and no wonder, just look at it.

Considered as one of the best-looking and most desirable XJS models produced, the convertible was a proper open-top luxury GT, with an electric hood mechanism, strengthened front section and subframe which could be constituted as a new car in its own right.

This "Jet Black" over magnolia example was imported back to its home country from South Africa in 2007, whereby it was enjoyed as a weekend car. Derek, the current owner purchased the car for his late wife as a surprise in 2015 and has since had a great amount of work carried out to ensure it's mechanically and cosmetically ready for its next voyage.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Derek the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Derek, a massive Jaguar fan purchased this luxurious XJS as a gift for his wife, and has since enjoyed it on many roadtrips.

Derek is a Jag man, he's owned many over the years and on a trip out with his wife to look for an S-Type for the weekends his wife stumbled upon this XJS Convertible for sale and instantly fell in love. Three days later Derek asked his local mechanic to check over the vehicle and found it in good mechanical order - shortly after he purchased it as a surprise gift for her. Derek reminisces about the trips during the week and weekends he used to go out in it with her.

Since Derek's wife has passed, he's kept the car in good order, and carried out work to maintain and upgrade the XJS. Derek has now decided it's time to sell the car. He mentioned to us "I am putting the car up for sale so someone else can enjoy it". Derek will be happy to answer any of your questions in the comments below.

Exterior

The XJS offers a luxurious aerodynamic body along with sleek styling which still turns heads today - especially in this rare Jet Black colour.

Wheels and Tyres

The lattice 15" alloy wheels look excellent all around on this example, with no curb damage noted as Derek has had all four wheels refurbished this month.

They are wrapped in 2x Firestone Firehawk TZ200 and 2x Maxxis Victra 510 - there appears to be a good amount of tread left on each tyre.

Bodywork

The bodywork of this powerful V12 XJS looks in great condition, with all the panel gaps around the car look to align well. During our visit we didn't spot any obvious dinks down the flanks of the car - everything looked crisp and sharp. Both the doors, boot, and bonnet open and close with ease, and door shuts / sills which are typically problem areas all looked clean and visually free of issue.

Derek tells us that the car has been subject to a rolling restoration over the past 2 years, with some body repairs made to the scuttle panel, A-post and sills to keep on top of things.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

A full respray in Jaguar "Jet Black" was carried out ~2 years ago as part of the work, along with the new silver and red coach lines down the side of the car.

The finish of the paint is great - it is even in colour and finish across all the panels, as you'd expect, and there are only a handful of small scratches that we could see.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass on this example looks great too and looks in line with the mileage and ownership. We didn't notice any major chips, cracks, or discolouration on our visit.

The window seals look great too and in line with the rest of the condition of the car.

Derek has also had the front and rear bumper sections re-chromed, as well as the soft top roof frame repaired with a new mohair roof fitted inside and out. The boot lock has been replaced, along with a new windscreen fitted.

Interior

Perhaps one of the finest grand touring cabin around - this luxurious XJS is packed full of '90s luxuries.

Seats and Carpets

As you would expect for a well-looked-after example, the interior matches the exterior and appears in great condition.

You can tell this car has been shown love over its lifetime. The door cards and mats present in great condition with no issues noticed. A spare pair of mats can be found in the boot along with the tonneau cover. Please take a look at the extensive media for a detailed view of the cabin.

Dashboard

Last month a new tachometer was fitted along with a new Sony MEX-N4100BT radio, amplifier, and new electric aerial.

The dashboard, shows no signs of any major damage or scuffs. No warning lights were displayed when we started the car and the odometer showed a reading of 126,616 on our visit.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original Jaguar steering wheel and automatic gear selector are presented in excellent condition and show very little signs of use.

Take a look at the photos and videos for a closer view of the cabin.

Mechanics

The highly sought-after V12 offers plenty of torque and one very comfortable ride.

Engine and Gearbox

Please watch the 'On the Road' video to see the car being started from cold, then run when up to temperature. On our short trip out, Derek operated the gears with ease.

During Derek's ownership, he has had the car serviced, along with the spark plugs, leads, distributor cap, rotor arm, ignition module, and coils replaced.

Suspension and Brakes

During Derek's ownership, he has also had the master cylinder, accumulator, serviced rear inboard brakes, renewed brake fluid, front callipers and brake pads changed. He reports the suspension setup is very comfortable while offering great performance in the corners.

Please view the mechanical videos and photographs to see close-up images from under the car - you'll notice it's recently been treated to a fresh wax-oil.

The Drive

The ultimate grand tourer, with all the looks and with the powerful V12 under the hood, you can sit back, relax and get to any destination in extreme class and comfort.

Electrics and Other

Derek has made us aware that the air conditioning no longer works along with the central locking and cruise control - he has not had them looked into so it's unknown how easy it would be to repair.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 year ownership with 18 service stamps, this car has been subject to a rolling restoration/refresh over the past 2 years, it's now ready for its next owner to use and enjoy.

The car is coming out of 7 years of Derek's ownership and it has bags of originality and of course the desirable V12 5.3L under the hood. Take a look at the media to see all the service history included within the sale of the car.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi Derek. I am your highest bidder at the moment. Car looks great! Can you tell me if there is any rust issues? Especially on the rear wheel arches? I am a keen XJS enthusiast but have never owned a convertible.
