Introduction

Darren Rungasamy
Editor and Photographer

The XJS is a fulfilling choice for those seeking refinement, comfort, and power.

Born out of an auspicious start, the Jaguar XJS became something of a late bloomer, as it developed its own sense of style, comfort and power. By the early 90s, any woes in terms of quality and reliability were banished, and in its facelift form became the car that should have been from the start; a comfortable grand-tourer with a distinct character and sense of nostalgia.

Fitted with a new 4.0-litre version of the AJ6 straight-six engine, the XJS convertible provided a sleek and balanced vision of what an open-top Jaguar should look like. A full four-seater with a generous amount of accommodation - the XJS offers effortless performance, impressive refinement and a great all-round driving experience.

Coming from ~9 months with our vendor, this 1992 4.0-litre XJS convertible is finished in 'Brooklands Green' with a 'Doeskin' leather interior. Having been part of a private Jaguar collection for several years, it has been recommissioned and seen a further ~£7,300 worth of mechanical spending in 2025. Cleanly presented throughout, it comes with its full owner's wallet, two keys and an MOT until August 2026. As part of its mechanical overhaul, it has seen new discs, pads, a full stainless steel exhaust system and underwent a full service in June 2025.

This listing was written from information supplied by Darren after meeting Eric the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I purchased the car with the intention of attending driving events.

Eric specifically bought the car to use and enjoy, having tracked down this XJS at the start of 2025 with the intention of driving it to the continent as part of the Jaguar owner club events. He has a history of owning formidable touring cars and chose the XJS for its excellent reputation for comfort and long-distance travel.

After buying the car from a specialist, Eric rectified a handful of minor issues to ensure its dependability.

Sadly, a health issue has meant it will no longer be used, and Eric has decided with great regret that it needs to find a new home.

Eric will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

Elegantly presented, these facelift models are considered the most resolved of the XJS lineage.

Wheels and Tyres

The lattice gold finish wheels are in positive condition, having been refurbished in 2022. Both nearside rims have mild marks.

The front and rear of the car are fitted with Pirelli P600 tyres. These are date-coded from 2014, the front offside tyre dating from 2021. They are all in good shape with plenty of legal tread.

Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the Jaguar's exterior and a closer look at the wheels and tyres to make your own assessment of their condition.

image

Bodywork

The body presents positively with no discernible serious corrosion or panel damage.

The panels are flush to the body with visually even shut lines - all doors open and close with ease.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view of what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

The 'Brooklands Green' paint finish has an even and consistent coverage; the sunlight catches mild hazing, but this could be resolved by a detailer. There are a few minor surface marks across the body and a light peppering of road wear on the nose, but none look to have penetrated beyond the top coat.

There is a paint repair patch on the driver's door near the door handle, a small chip on the passenger door and a slight paint irregularity on the boot lid, but overall, the presentation is above the expectations of the car of this age.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

image

Glass and Trim

The glass is in good shape, with mild marks noted on the top centre of the windscreen.

The lights are in good condition, with just a mild crack on the rear offside reflector.

The trim looks smart and is all well-mounted.

There is minor wear on the chrome grill finisher, and we noted light spots of corrosion on the headlamp bezels.

The bumpers are well-mounted, and the rear rubber trim shows a handful of scuffs.

image

Interior

The interior exudes a sense of care and attention, showcasing its well-maintained condition.

Seats and Carpets

The leather seats are clean, with the usual mild age-related creases.

The carpets are in good shape and all are damp-free.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard is smartly presented, with no damage noted on the leather padding.

The facia looks positive, with just a minor fracture on the glove box veneer.

The centre console is clean, with an array of positively finished switches and controls.

The owner confirms all of the functions and dials function as they should.

The door cards, headlining and interior trim are tidy.

The boot suggests careful use, with mild signs of age on the carpet.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel and gear lever are in excellent condition.

image

Mechanics

A considerable amount of recent mechanical spending will instil confidence in the way it drives.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0-litre engine fires up without any drama from cold, free of knocks or unwanted noises. It idles smoothly with no unwanted exhaust smoke, aside from the expected cold engine condensation. The dashboard warning lights all remain in check.

The engine presentation is positive, having been dry ice treated in April 2025. The hoses and ancillaries are in good condition and the car has recently been fitted with a new stainless steel exhaust, downpipe, centre pipe, catalyst and rear over pipes. It also received a full service, new oil pressure sender and fuel gauge unit in June 2025.

The automatic transmission works without any reported issues, free of slippage or unwanted noises and with a smooth kick down.

image

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension components have a light sheen of age on them, but the car absorbs the road with no unwanted knocks or negative feedback - a pair of new shock absorbers was fitted in 2021.

The car brakes efficiently, with no squeals or judders.

The handbrake and brake calipers were reassembled, and all of the discs and pads were replaced in the spring of 2025.

image

The Drive

The 4.0-litre straight-six is admired for its smoothness and refinement, and is often considered the ideal balance of power and fuel economy. Its near-silent engine tone can be provoked into a purposeful bark when pressed.

The car drives confidently, as Eric treated us to a mix of driving speeds. The steering is fault-free, feeling nimble and responsive. The engine was kept under 3,000 rpm, but its linear acceleration and smooth delivery provided plenty of confidence. Eric bought the car with the intention of using it and handed it over to a specialist who gave the car a full check-over.

The car certainly felt tight around the corners, with no issues regarding its handling or ride. Free of any form of mechanical noises, when braking, steering or accelerating - there were a few cabin creaks, but this is down to the age of the interior trim.

It felt stable at all times, the automatic gearbox operated perfectly, and the sport mode was activated and demonstrated to work perfectly. The car has undergone a recent major service.

Eric has driven the Jaguar a few hundred miles or so, with nothing negative to report regarding the oil pressure or engine temperature.

image

Electrics and Other

We didn't have a chance to test all electrics but Eric told us, to his knowledge, that everything was in working order, except the air conditioning, he said it may need re-gassing.

The roof is free of significant marks and lowers and raises with no issues, having been just fitted with new hoses, since our visit Eric told us there was a problem with leaking in the new hydraulic pipes for the roof so the classic restorer has repaired the old pipes and the roof seems OK to operate.

Eric will supply the hood cover for the car.

History and Paperwork

Over ~£7,300 has been spent on the car in 2025 alone.

First registered in August 1992 by Jaguar Brentford, the car had been extensively serviced at the Jaguar main dealer. From 2000, it saw a reduction in use and was placed into a private Jaguar collection. Recommissioned in 2019, it was then bought by a classic car specialist who sold it to Eric in early 2025. With the intention of using the car, Eric then invested over ~£7,300 in mechanical maintenance to bring the car up to the best possible standard with a view to driving long distances in it.

As part of this expenditure, it was in the hands of Fisher Performance Cars in March 2025, who rectified the minor mechanical issues and concluded it was running well. L&M Classics serviced the car in June 2025 and attended to the cosmetics and operational needs of the XJS. The most recent work includes hood pipes, a full stainless steel exhaust system, sensors, relays and switches. Before Eric's ownership, the car also saw new shocks, a battery and refurbished alloys. It comes with its full owner's wallet, two keys and has a MOT to August 2026.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a history check on the vehicle - this is a professional check operated by HPI that will highlight if the car has been previously stolen, recorded as being in an accident, or have any outstanding finance - note, this does not include a mileage history check.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment of the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bids, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi I’m trying to bid for your car, I’ve tried numerous times in the last hour to register my bank card on trade classic site, it has been verified 4 times by my bank but trade classic is still not responding to my efforts to bid. I am willing to pay considerably more than the current bid of £6400. Any suggestions

Oil pressure gauge is very high. Is there an issue with the sender?
