Introduction

Glyn Parry
Professional Consigner and Photographer

With presentation that has to be seen to be believed, this is possibly one of the best looking examples of a Jaguar XJ40 we've seen.

Officially unveiled in October 1986, the Jaguar XJ40 was the all-new, second generation of the XJ built to replace the Series III. The XJ40 was at the time, the most extensively tested vehicle the company had ever developed with designs for the XJ40 pioneering significant improvements to how Jaguar cars were designed, built, and assembled. To date, the XJ40 and its later derivatives, is the second longest running Jaguar XJ platform with a total production run of ~17 years.

Presenting exceptionally well, this is a real shining example of an exceptional Jaguar - great looking Diamond Blue Metallic paint finish shows in stunning condition and all areas of the bodywork looked fantastic.

The XJ40 has benefitted from regular Jaguar servicing over its lifetime from new until 2012, following this the Jaguar was equally well maintained with the last service actioned in 2019. Interestingly the car has had previous ownership from 'titled' keepers which is reflected in the great level of care, upkeep and maintenance given to the Jaguar. Having only had 4 owners since new, the XJ40 comes to market from ~3 years present ownership.

This auction listing was written from information supplied by Glyn after meeting Paul the custodian, on behalf of the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

Immaculate and original low mileage car - validated by a comprehensive service history - you'll struggle to find a better one.

The beautifully presented Jaguar 4.0L XJ40 Sovereign is finished in a lovely Diamond Blue metallic and doeskin leather trim interior. With just four registered keepers since new, this is a car that has really been looked after and well kept over its life - it even has the original 1993 sales invoice from Lancaster Jaguar, which shows an initial purchase cost of £36,000 from new.

Coming fresh to market as part of a private collection, 'Heritage Classics’ a renowned Jaguar specialist company, have been trusted to look after the sale of the car on behalf of the owner who is reducing his collection.

The XJ40 has been owned since 2019 by the collector since 2019 and the low mileage on this car is further substantiated by MOT records that can been seen in the paperwork. If you have any questions about the car, Heritage Classics will be on hand to answer in the comments below.

Exterior

Beautiful British classic design at its most refined - smooth and elegant, this is a real piece of fine heritage motoring.

Wheels and Tyres

All the way around the car the tyres and wheels showed really well. Likely to be the original Pirelli P4000 tyres, they are showing their age now with a few cracks beginning to appear.

A Pirelli P4000 spare tyre is included in the boot which comes with its original cover and presents almost as new. It would be a consideration for the future owner to change the tyres at a later date to keep safety in mind bearing in mind that these are over ~30 years old.

Bodywork

The bodywork is exceptional on this Jaguar; chrome sections, lights, panels, shut lines and gaps all looked brilliant, aligning well and showing without issue.

Looking around the car it was certainly difficult to spot an issue or find anything that caused any concern with the XJ40.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our high resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in Diamond Blue metallic the exterior of the XJ40 is really stunning. Presented really well it was difficult to find an issue with the paint. If we were being very picky, the only factor we could think about that would benefit the car further would be to give it a good mop / polish over which would only improve the appearance further.

We've taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The glass is all presented in great condition, with no major scratches or chips which we could see at the time of our visit. The trim and seals are the same, matching the rest of the vehicle.

There was a very small sign of lamination lift on the corner of the window edge, but really nothing that caused a concern.

Take a look through the exterior gallery and review video, we take you across all the areas of the car as if you were standing there for yourself. This way, you can see in greater detail what a great looking vehicle the XJ40 really is.

Interior

Like something out of a time capsule, the interior has been preserved in its original glory exceptionally well.

Seats and Carpets

Finished in Doeskin leather the seats matched the exterior in terms of standards. Great looking throughout and a really comfortable place to be. A really minor observation was a little area of wear on the drivers seat bolster section.

Reflecting the rest of the interior finish, carpet sections in the main cabin, trunk section and roof lining all looked great.

Please see the interior gallery for more detailed images covering off the cabin area of the Jaguar.

Dashboard

The dash area holds space for the functional cruise control, tape player and radio stereo function as well as air con. Showing no cracks, splits or issue the cabin section looks great throughout.

Being really picky, the wood inlay on the centre console was slightly wrinkled but this is a fairly common sight on these cars, regardless of mileage.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The steering wheel presents really well, with the very limited mileage on the car overall, its almost as if the car has barely been used. Simple and functional with a lovely Jaguar emblem pride of place in the wheel centre, we found no issues here.

We've detailed some more images of the cabin area including the steering wheel in our Interior Gallery section, head over to see more shots of what's on offer with the Jaguar.

Mechanics

With regular Jaguar servicing through its history and showing just ~23,449 miles on the clock at time of visit, this XJ40 looks as good under the bonnet as it does on the outside.

Engine and Gearbox

Running comfortably from initial startup and idling nicely, the engine showed no signs of concern from cold or when we took the car out on the road.

Take a look at our "Mechanical Review" video where we see the car starting up and running. Following the cold start, we take the Jaguar out for a drive where you can hear the engine work its way comfortably through its paces.

Suspension and Brakes

The car handles incredibly well, largely down to its original build quality and with subsequent low mileage, we found no issues whilst out in the Jaguar. Suspension showed to have no untoward noises with braking working as to be expected.

Take a look at our 'On the Road' video to see in real time how the car responds to the road and driving. We take the car through its functions when out driving giving our overview of the car.

The Drive

The car cruised out on its journey without any concern. With great levels of feedback on the road, the steering was an ease to use and gave a relaxing journey due to its ride quality.

Slick shift changes through the automatic gears and a smooth engine gave a real sense of peace in the Jaguar. The drive was a breeze when out on the roads which was reinforced with its refined suspension and lovely handling.

Electrics and Other

With a functional cruise control system, air con and tape player the car does everything it could do from new.

The current owner has reported that all other areas of the electrical system are in line with the rest of the condition of the car, i.e. in full working order to his knowledge.

History and Paperwork

With ownership that has included two 'titled' owners, this is a car that has been a key part of a classic collection having been loved and treated with the upmost respect over the course of its history.

The XJ40 has benefitted from regular Jaguar servicing over its lifetime from new until 2012, following this the Jaguar was equally well maintained with the last service actioned in 2019. Having only had 4 owners since new, the XJ40 comes to market from ~3 years present ownership.

Noted in the gallery sections is the paperwork included with the Jaguar, showing the great levels of detail, servicing and attention lavished on the XJ40 reflects why the car still looks this good today. A lovely point of detail included with the car is the original VHS and cassette tape owners guide showing further that the history behind the car is something that is determined to be preserved.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

This is an auction on behalf of a trade seller and normal auction rules apply, i.e. there is no warranty, no return policy and bids are binding. As you can see, we go to great lengths to represent the car as fully and as accurately as we can, so please take time to review the entire listing, images, and videos and also ask any questions you may have in the 'Ask Owner' section before placing your bid.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So please sit back, have a cuppa and take your time to review everything on this listing in order to make your own assessment on the vehicle's condition. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.

Hi there, Can you confirm if the car needs any recommissioning before being used or if it is currently ready to drive away? Are both sets of keys and remotes present and do both remotes work? Is the electric aerial fully working? Does the car run on normal E10 or super unleaded such as Shell V-Power? Finally, I’m a trade buyer so if my bid is successful will it acceptable to provide me with the full V5, excluding the completed trade slip? I have motor trade insurance. Many thanks for your help and the best of luck with the auction.… Read more »

Thanks for getting back to me with the information and having seen one or two similar models online, the asking price are just in 5 figures which may be a little too expensive for me at the moment. I’m sure the car will achieve a worth while price, as the car looks wonderful.
Thanks again and a happy new year to you.

Good evening, I am a complete novice to car auctions, as I have never bought a car like this in my life but noticed your beautiful jaguar and wouldn’t like to waste your time but May I ask what approximate price are you hoping to achieve for the car please? I would, as am sure others would be very keen to own this lovely car. I had one many years ago and always promised myself another someday. Thank you so much for your time, it’s much appreciated.
Regards. Joe

Hi, I’ve noticed a few references to AC/Heating systems in the service paperwork. Do the heating and air conditioning work well at present?

I’d also look at the underside of the oil filler cap if I were able to view the car in person.

Is there any evidence of sludge or condensation in the cooling system?

I can’t see any evidence of coolant changes in the visible service records. Is it maybe on pages which haven’t been shown?

Thank you for your help.
