One of Jaguars most iconic and desirable grand tourers to date, their stock is rising fast.

The XJS is a luxury grand tourer produced by Jaguar from 1975 to 1996, it was based on the XJ saloon platform and was noted for the unique prominent rear flying buttresses with early styling drawn by Jaguars best aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer. While this modern classic remains remarkable value for money they are quickly appreciating, and no wonder, just look at it.

We're really impressed with this 4.0L AJ6 XJS example, Chris was advised to buy this example from the folks at the XJS owners club as a good purchase option, we certainly agree. With just ~63,000 miles on the clock, it's a relatively low mileage example.

Meet the owner

I bought this XJS as a gift for my wife, but really it's another toy for our classic collection.

Chris purchased the car for his wife in March, something classic for her to drive which would compliment some of the other classic GTs that Chris owns. However, it hasn't really been used much and as they are looking to cut down on their collection, the last in will actually be the first to go.

Over Chris and Nicole's ownership, they have had 4x new Landsail tyres fitted as well as callipers, discs and pads replaced where required. In addition to this, he has detailed the car in his ownership, and by looking at the paperwork you can see the previous owners have very much given the car star treatment over its life too.

Exterior

The design principles were a bold move for Jaguar back in the day, it's aerodynamically advanced for its time, a design that now has matured.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with 16" 5-spoke Jaguar star alloys, we really like the sportier look these give this coupe. When getting really close to each alloy, we noticed some very faint areas of curbing on the front offside, and rear nearside wheel.

Chris has very recently had 4x new Landsail IS288's fitted, these tires have done under 1000 miles, ensuring plenty of tread is left for the new owner.

Bodywork

The bodywork on this car is of very high standard indeed, it's not the 'usual' standard that you'll often come across, owing to careful ownership over the previous 27 years.

The shut lines and panel gaps all look excellent and flush with no signs of accident repairs in the past, with the underside of the car looking to be clean and solid without any damage. The hood on the car looks in excellent condition too, no damage to note.

Paint

Finished in a deep and luxurious Flamenco Red, the colour really does the body shape justice. The paint looks even in colour and coverage across each panel, please take a look at the photos for a detailed view of the paintwork.

When capturing the paint we didn't find any signs of lacquer peel or misting, just the very slightest of paint chips along the front bumper and rear wheel arches. You'll have to get really close to notice these areas.

Glass and Trim

The chrome trim around the car appears in excellent condition with no signs of pitting. The glass looks great with no signs of cracks, chips or discoloration.

Interior

One of the finest cabin spaces in town, these GTs by Jaguar were all about a luxurious cruise.

Seats and Carpets

Just as you would expect for a well cared for example, the interior appears in excellent condition. The seats are no exception and have recently had new foam fitted while being recoloured by AutoRetrim.co.uk who have over 35 years specialising in interior retrimming.

These specialists have also retrimmed the headlining and repaired the carpet. Please take a look at the photos and videos to see for yourself how good this interior really is.

Dashboard

The dash top is very good, this car has clearly been looked after and garaged over the years with very little signs of sun damage.

The dashboard is surrounded with a familiar dark walnut trim, which appears in excellent condition and Chris reports all the dials and clocks are working just as you would expect.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The black leather steering wheel matches the rest of the trim in the interior and is presented in excellent condition.

Mechanics

A bulletproof 4.0L AJ6 straight-six is found under the hood, paired to an automatic gearbox, delivering all the power to the rear wheels.

Engine and Gearbox

Fitted with the silky and refined 4.0L AJ6 straight-six, this engine offers the perfect blend of economy and performance. The car offers up 222bhp, for you to tap into and will hit 60mph in 8.9s, not bad indeed for a luxury grand tourer.

We carried out our usual cold start video which can be seen in the mechanical video. Watch Chris turn over the car and let simmer down to idle with no issues.

Suspension and Brakes

Chris has had the rear brake pads, discs and a calliper changed just under 2 months ago, ensuring the XJS upholds its prompt stopping power.

Underneath, the car it appears it's free from any major corrosion, Chris confirms the suspension and brakes are in full working order with no unusual sounds or vibrations when driving.

The Drive

Sit back and enjoy the experience of driving one of Jaguar's finest classic grand tourers. The car offers effortless performance and retains its reputation for its road-holding manners.

Electrics and Other

All of the electrics on the car are said to be working, including the lighting and locking systems. The electric windows and adjustable wing mirrors also work very well with no lag. The original Jaguar cassette radio is fitted, which keeps the cabin space very original.

History and Paperwork

XJS in this condition very rarely come to sale, with a relatively low mileage of ~63,000, this looks like a cracking example.

Coming to market after a few month's ownership from Chris, the car has a great history file documenting its life and mileage over time. If you're after an XJS that finished in the right colour and has been given the proper attention a car of this calibre deserves, then this is the one for you. Nearly 2/3 of the mileage on this car was in its first 3 years, and the remaining 20,000 miles in the following 24 years. looking at the history and online there is no MOT history from 2007 – 2015 although above it states “with MOT history charting its life”. not quite sure this is true as there is 8 years missing ? do you know what happened to the car in that time as it did 118 miles ?

nice car, where is the original service book ? as you have all the other original jaguar books, any stamped service history pre 2017 to back up the low mileage

When the previous owner died the Xjs was stored by the owners daughter until she could face selling the car. There is part service history but when the owners daughter cleared out her father’s house some of the previous service history was lost. I can assure you that the mileage is correct otherwise I wouldn’t have bought the car and this can be evidenced by the cars outstanding condition.
I’ll come back to you with further information when I’ve contacted the previous owners daughter.

Lovely looking example, Chris…is the exhaust system Stainless steel,and any any oil leaks and is it watertight…..?

Hi Reg,
I’m not sure whether you got a message I sent earlier as I had a problem logging in. I think the exhaust is stainless steel as it’s still looks shiny under neath. The Xjs has no oil leaks at all as I know this can be common on classic cars but certainly not on this car. The car is in immaculate condition and drives live a modern day car.
I’m sure whoever buys the car won’t be disappointed.

Hi Reg,
I forgot to reply about whether the Xjs is watertight. I’ve never driven it in the rain but when I wash it there’s no water ingress at all and this is even when hosing the car down.
