Introduction

Dom Ginn
Vehicle Consigner and Photographer

Stylish, elegant, the XJS Celebration is a sought after run-out special from Jaguar.

As successor to the iconic E-type the XJ-S was always going to have a tough act to follow. This didn’t mean Jaguar approached the project conservatively though. The company used aerodynamicist Malcolm Sayer for the initial design. Sayer had established himself as a pioneer in the application of aerodynamic principles to mainstream production cars. Following the tragic death of Sayer in the 1970’s the design mantle was picked up by Jaguar’s in house team.

The car first became available in 1975 and enjoyed a production run of 21 years making it Jaguars longest running model. Available initially with a V12 the XJ-S was later offered in straight six form with 3.6 and 4.0 litre displacement. Following extensive improvements and a facelift in 1991 after Fords acquisition of Jaguar the car became known simply as the XJS. This last model is the best regarded of the range and production continued for a further five years.

This car has been with its current owner for ~7 years and comes in stunning “Ice Blue Metallic” over an ivory leather interior. The car is in good condition and is showing only ~75,000 miles which is supported by the MOT certificates. This Jaguar has been well looked after with an extensive maintenance history showing thoughtful and diligent ownership. A stunning convertible with great looks, plenty of power and classic Jaguar comfort and style.

This listing was written from information supplied by Dom after meeting Bob the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

It’s a lovely car – responsive, plenty of power when you need it, smooth gear changes and it looks fantastic.

Bob is no stranger to classic sports cars and always fancied an XJS. He tells us “I Always loved the XJS and particularly the late model which I think are by far the best looking”. He goes on to say “It’s a great car to drive – it’s really comfortable, really smooth and can put in a nice turn of speed when you want it to”.

“I just don’t get to use the car as much as I would like so it’s time for a new owner to enjoy it”. Bob will be happy to answer any questions you have about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

This XJS projects an elegant, purposeful and capable demeanour - it’s everything a Jaguar should be

Wheels and Tyres

The diamond turned 16-inch alloy wheels, exclusive for this special addition, appear in good condition with only minor signs of wear which would be expected on a car of this age. There is no significant curbing, and the centre badging still looks good.

The wheels are shod with 225/60/R16 tyres, Pirelli P4000 on the front and ContiPremium on the rear. Wear on the front tyres was noted as an advisory on the recent MOT. Take a look through the pictures to see more detail.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, panels do not appear to have any obvious distortion and shut lines appear good. The doors, boot, and bonnet open and close properly while the hood looks in good shape, functioning properly as can be seen in the Exterior Review video. There is a receipt in the paperwork for hood replacement in 2018. Overall, the car presents very well.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

The "Ice Blue Metallic" paint looks great and is such a great colour choice for these cars. The finish is consistent and even and still retains a deep shine. Apart from the occasional age-related mark the paintwork presents very well for a car of this era.

As would be expected on a 28-year-old car there are occasional stone chips here and there. The front valance has a slight crack and there is a minor scratch on the offside rear valance. Bob tells us the XJS has a P1 coating to the paintwork to protect its condition, this cost ~£2,000. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen, windows, and mirrors all appear in very good condition with no cracks or significant scratching. As mentioned previously, the hood was replaced in 2018.

Lenses are generally good with only a minor crack on showing on the offside rear light lens. Chromework looks particularly good, and we could find few signs of age-related wear.

Interior

Ivory leather, embossed headrests and signature walnut dash give an air of opulence and luxury – this could only be a Jaguar.

Seats and Carpets

The ivory leather seats appear in generally good condition with no major rips or tears that we could see. The seats are showing wear typical of a car of this age with the driver’s seat squab and bolster being the most notable. Bob told us the bolsters on the rear seats have small cracks in them, a common problem with the XJS, when the roof goes up and down it catches the rear seats, he has had them fixed a couple of times but the roof still touches.

The carpets look good and there is a receipt in the paperwork showing carpet replacement in 2019. Take a look through the images for the detail.

Dashboard

Instruments look great set in the signature Walnut dash and are clear and unmarked. The wood and trim are in good condition and give a luxurious and opulent feel.

Please take the time to look at the hi resolution images and video of the interior so that you can assess the condition for yourself and appreciate this great cabin.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The walnut and leather steering wheel with Jaguar badged centre section looks in generally good condition although a small area of Walnut veneer has broken away on the steering wheel as can be seen in the images. The automatic drive selector lever and surround appear in good condition.

Mechanics

With ~228BHP from the AJ16 straight-six, delivered to the rear wheels, through a silky smooth 4-speed automatic gearbox.

Engine and Gearbox

The straight-six fitted to these cars offered a top speed of around 140MPH from factory and 0-60 in under ~8 seconds. On our cold start, the engine fired up willingly and quickly settled down to a steady idle. Emissions appeared clear and there were no warning lights illuminated on the dash.

Check out the “On the Road” video to share in our experience of the cold start and our test drive with Bob, and see the car go through the gears too.

Suspension and Brakes

Jaguar engineered suspension and brakes are more than a match for the ~228BHP generated by the 4.0L engine. Bob assures us both suspension and brakes work exactly as they should.

The Drive

On the short test drive, we took with Bob the car drove exactly as a Jaguar should. It was smooth and quiet with the gear changes barely perceptible.

When required the brakes pulled up sharply and cleanly with no pulling or judder. We could hear no untoward noises from the suspension – this is Jaguar engineering after all.

Electrics and Other

Electrics on these cars are relatively uncomplicated. All switches, dials and gauges look in great condition and Bob advises that everything works as it should.

An aftermarket Kenwood audio head unit with Bluetooth was fitted in 2022. Bob still has the original radio but has not been able to find someone to fix it. He also told us the central locking works with the keys but the fobs can be a little unreliable, possibly needing reset.

History and Paperwork

Coming to market from ~7 years ownership, a modest ~75,800 miles on the clock, and just 5 former keepers, this stunning Ice Blue Celebration is a great example of these increasingly collectable Jaguars.

A fantastic luxury sports car - stylish, powerful, and elegant. With only ~75,800 miles on the clock this is a car that has been well looked after. The car comes with extensive documentation including original service book and owner’s manual, MOT certificates and invoices for numerous works demonstrating conscientious and careful ownership. The car comes with two keys.

We’ve done all our usual seller checks including photo ID, V5 and also actioned a HPi check on the vehicle.

We've summarised our own view on the car based on information gained from the seller in the listing above, however, and as you can see, we go to great lengths to photograph and video the car in hi-resolution detail - this has been done for you to make your own assessment from the comfort of your sofa. Viewings are also welcomed with all our listings, so please get in touch with us to arrange a suitable time - we just need to speak to you first and receive a valid photo ID before confirming.

If there's anything you're unsure about, no matter how small, then please first ask the owner in the comments area below before placing your bid/s, as bids can't be retracted and form a binding contract if you win the car - just like a traditional auction house.
