The Jaguar XJ (X300) is a full-size luxury saloon and the first produced entirely under Ford ownership. Despite initial observations about the regressive styling and slightly old-fashioned demeanour of the car, Jaguar had gone to huge efforts into improving the build quality and reliability of their products. Meet the owner

Ray is a serial XJ6 owner - this one in particular is number five.

Ray is a Jaguar man through and through, and although he’s owned this for 27 years, this is in fact his fifth Jaguar XJ. The things Ray likes about the luxury saloon are the comfortable ride, power when needed, great styling and a reliable vehicle, which is why he repeatedly goes back to them.

Usually found stored in the garage, the Jaguar doesn’t come out if it’s raining and even then only used at the weekend or special occasions. Such little use is the reason for the sale; Ray would like to see someone who will use it and have the pleasure of the XJ6.

Exterior

Jaguar styled the XJ6 just right, retaining the classic fluted bonnet similar to the series one XJ.

Wheels and Tyres

The original wheels are finished with diamond cut faces, these are in the original condition, which is good to see - there are some areas where water ingress has caused some light corrosion. However, any reputable wheel refurbisher could easily give them a redress.

The tyres are matching Pirelli P6000, which have been on for some time but have a good amount of tread remaining.

Bodywork

Looking around the XJ6, all the panels and shut lines appear to align just as they did when the Jaguar rolled off the production line in 1996.

It’s worth looking at the underside images, the sills in particular, are excellent and show no signs of corrosion.

Paint

Finished in Carnival Red, the car presents really well.

This is an original car so there are some odd stone chips to the front end, a couple of light scuff marks on the bumper and some scratches on the door, which look to have been picked up in a car park.

Generally, the paintwork appears to be very honest and would certainly benefit from a full machine polish to help remove some of the minor scratches. This would improve the paintwork significantly.

The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these hi-resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

The windows look to be in good condition, with no apparent scratches on the front, rear, or side windows. The chrome trims and seals also look to be in good order.

The headlights are in good condition too with no chips. There is a small crack in the driver's side indicator, but it would be easy to replace if desired. The rear light lenses are also free from any damage.

Interior

Comfort and luxury embrace you when you take a seat in the luxury saloon.

Seats and Carpets

The seats in the Jaguar are finished in Oatmeal leather. These would be described as in good condition with a small amount of colour wear to the driver’s bolster.

They would also benefit from a deep clean and leather conditioner. The door cards have some minor scuffs caused by getting in and out, which may clean off. The rear seat has small signs of use, and again there are minor scuff marks on the back of the seats.

The carpets are in excellent condition, having been kept this way with another two sets of mats fitted, which are both in good order. Unfortunately, the headlining has started to sag, which is quite common amongst XJ Jaguars of this age, however there are local specialist that can put it back like new.

Inside the boot, the carpet is clean and tidy; the spare wheel and the jack and wheel brace are present - the floor itself is very clean, with no areas of concern.

Dashboard

There are no splits or cracks to the top of the dashboard, and the wood fascia is free from any delaminating or crazed lacquer. The lower oatmeal sections of the dash have a few scuff marks, but as before, these may clean off.

The instruments are all in working order, with no warning lights displayed when the engine is running, and the odometer shows a reading of 45,425 miles.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The original quality leather steering wheel shows minimal signs of wear, as does the automatic gearknob. The gear surround is in good order with no splits to the plastic.

Mechanics

The silky smooth straight-six is a wonderful piece of engineering - refined and robust.

Engine and Gearbox

As you will see in our cold start video, the 4.0 litre engine fires up without hesitation and runs as smooth as silk. This is mainly due to it being an excellent engine to start with, followed by a superb service history and low mileage.

The automatic transmission glides through the gears with no jerking between changes. No untoward noises are coming from the transmission, and everything appears to be in good order during our visit.

Suspension and Brakes

The suspension causes no areas of concern - no knocks or bangs are coming from either corner of the car, and the ride is smooth.

Ray says the car stops in a straight line, and everything appears as it should in the braking department.

The Drive

It may be from 1996, but one thing is for sure, the Jaguar is comfortable. Even on uneven roads, the suspension soaks up the bumps to provide a soft and smooth ride, as you would expect from a luxury car manufacturer.

The XJ6 also has enough power when called upon from the 4.0 litre straight-six.

Electrics and Other

Everything in the car is reported to be working just as it should. The switchgear looks in good order, with the lettering to the buttons showing minimal signs of any wear, and nice to see, the factory radio is present. Ray told us he had the vehicle immobiliser module replaced in 2018.

History and Paperwork

With one owner for 27 years - it’s nice to see a complete history file from the beginning.

This is one car where you will be amazed at just how much history has been saved. Not only that, the servicing and MOTs have been meticulously carried out more or less at the same times each year for the 27 years Ray has owned the car.

The original handbooks and both keys are present along with the original bill of sale, Ray even has the original Owners Guide cassette tape. Incidentally, although the V5 says one previous keeper, this was, in fact, the main dealer Ray bought the car from. They had the car registered to them as a demonstration vehicle, but when they couldn’t supply Ray one in an adequate time, they said they would sell him this.

Probably one of the most well-documented history files we have seen on a vehicle of this age with such low mileage and ownership. It's one of those cars which ticks all the boxes, making it a fantastic opportunity to buy.
