Introduction

Paul Wright
Professional Consigner

The XK8 ticks a lot of boxes as a grand tourer and a usable convertible – luxurious, sleek and powerful.

These elegant, Fergus Pollock-styled cars were first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show in 1996. Available in both convertible and coupé form, they were warmly received by the public; over ~90,000 were sold, mainly to the UK and US markets. A worthy successor to the XJS, the XK8 pioneered Jaguar's first homegrown V8. Previous V8 Jaguar offerings had very successfully utilised a Daimler unit. However, this new engine was highly innovative and featured 32 valves, variable valve timing and a power output of ~290BHP.

True to its Jaguar pedigree, the XK8 looks every inch the feline predator, with more than a hint of E-type heritage. Sharing a platform with the Aston Martin DB7, it’s a beautiful, luxurious and powerful sports car, capable of delivering an engaging, communicative and exhilarating driving experience.

This 1997 "Ice Blue Metallic" Jaguar XK8 comes from a ~10.5 year ownership where it has been cherished, pampered and used very little! It also comes with a current MOT valid until 22.02.2026.

This listing was written from information supplied by Paul after meeting Chris the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

I purchased it as a present, the Jaguar has only been used for special occasions.

~10.5 years ago, Chris purchased the Jaguar XK8, a car he had admired for many years. Owning the Jaguar, the car has only really been used for special occasions and the odd day out, which can be verified by just ~1,000 miles covered during his ownership.

Now that Chris is downsizing, the choice of houses available without a garage is much greater than those with one; therefore, he has made the decision to part with the XK8 to give greater flexibility in the housing market. Chris will be happy to answer any questions in the comments section below about the car.

Exterior

There’s no denying the XK8 is a great-looking convertible and a fantastic choice for the summer.

Wheels and Tyres

Fitted with the original wheels, these are generally in good condition with just the odd age-related curb mark on a couple of the wheels as pictured.

The front and rear tyres are two different brands, but both have a good amount of tread remaining.

image

Bodywork

Looking around the XK8, the bodywork is in very good condition. No dings or dents were spotted, and the panel gaps are equal and matching. There is a small amount of corrosion visible at the bottom of the front wheel arch lips.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

image

Paint

Finished in "Ice Blue Metallic", the paintwork presents very well, with no noticeable scratches or chips other than what you would normally expect from a well-cared-for car of this age.

Images are taken from multiple angles to give you a realistic impression of the car, just as if you were standing beside it. Please take the time to examine these high-resolution images and videos to assess the condition for yourself.

image

Glass and Trim

All of the windows are in good condition and free from any noticeable scratches. There is a small amount of corrosion on the driver's door window trim, which is quite common to see on this model.

The fabric roof is in good condition with no damage to mention, and this operates correctly, going up and down. The front and rear lights are in good order with no splits or cracks to the lenses.

image

Interior

A full luxury leather interior gives you all the comfort you need in this grand tourer convertible.

Seats and Carpets

Finished with a full cream leather interior, the seats are in excellent condition. There is a tiny amount of wear to the driver’s bolster, but this is minimal. The rear seats are in excellent condition, as are both door cards.

The beige carpets are in good condition, with just minor signs of wear to the driver’s side mat, as you would expect. Inside the boot is clean and tidy, and the original space-saver spare wheel is in place.

image

Dashboard

The dashboard in the Jaguar is free from damage. Instruments are working correctly with no warning lights displayed when the car is running, and the odometer has a reading of ~107,887 miles.

image

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The standard wood and leather steering wheel is in good condition with no sign of excessive wear to the rim or buttons. The same can be said for the automatic gear knob.

Please refer to the interior gallery for more images.

image

Mechanics

Fitted with the 4.0-litre V8 – this is the perfect engine to cruise along in, accompanied by a nice burble.

Engine and Gearbox

The 4.0-litre fires up without hesitation and runs with no issues reported by Chris. The car was warm for our initial start-up, as the owner had had the car out running before.

On the road, the car is super smooth and pulls effortlessly through the automatic gearbox, which has a smooth change. Take a look at the video to see and hear the car.

image

Suspension and Brakes

It’s a Jaguar – luxury motoring has to be smooth, and the XK8 doesn’t disappoint. Soaking up the road with ease, there are no knocks or bangs from the suspension, and the car comes to a stop in a straight line and with no juddering through the pedal.

image

The Drive

Driving the Jaguar XK8 is a refined and relaxing experience, blending classic British grand tourer charm with modern technology (for its time). Its smooth 4.0-litre V8 engine delivers effortless power, accompanied by a rich, muted growl under acceleration.

The automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly, making cruising a pleasure, while the suspension offers a supple ride that soaks up imperfections without sacrificing composure.

image

Electrics and Other

All of the switchgear appears to be working correctly, apart from the air conditioning, which doesn’t blow as cold as it should. This may just need a re-gas, but this hasn’t been investigated.

image

History and Paperwork

This car comes to market from ~10.5 year ownership, just 3 former keepers and condition that belies the mileage, it has its owner’s handbooks, stamped service booklet and both key sets of keys.

The Jaguar has an excellent service history with a number of stamps, all corresponding with the mileage. Due to limited of use, the last service was carried out in 2020, and since then just a few hundred miles have been covered.

All of the owner’s handbooks are in place, along with two key sets. There are some previous invoices for work carried out and some parts, but these are mainly from before Chris took ownership. It comes with a current MOT valid until 22.02.2026.

A well-presented 1997 Jaguar XK8 which has been well pampered for the past ten years, spending more time in the garage rather than being driven. It’s now time for the Jaguar to be released into the wild and let the new custodian enjoy it to its full potential.

We’ve carried out our usual seller checks, including verifying photo ID, the V5C, and an HPI check. This confirms the car has not been stolen, written off, or has any outstanding finance. Please note: This check does not include mileage verification.

We’ve summarised the car based on the seller’s information above. As always, we go to great lengths to photograph and film the car in high-resolution detail so you can make your own informed assessment from the comfort of your sofa. So grab a cuppa, relax, and enjoy reviewing everything in this listing.

Viewings are welcome for all our listings. Please get in touch to arrange a time – we just need to speak with you first and receive valid photo ID before confirming.

If there’s anything you’re unsure about, no matter how small, please ask the owner in the comments section below before placing your bids, as bids cannot be retracted and form a binding contract if you win – just like in a traditional auction house.

    Key Bidding Facts

    What is your reserve policy?

A reserve is the minimum price a seller is willing to accept for their vehicle. We work closely with sellers to set realistic reserves that reflect current market values — we don’t take on vehicles with inflated or unrealistic expectations.

If the reserve isn’t met when the auction ends, we’ll work with the highest bidder to try and agree a deal with the seller.

Whether the reserve has been met may / may not be disclosed during the auction — just like a traditional auction house. Bidders usually find out if they’ve won only when the auction ends.

    As a guide:
    – If you’re able to place a second bid, the reserve hasn’t been met.
    – If you attempt to outbid yourself and the system blocks it, then the reserve has been met.

Why shouldn’t I leave bidding to the last minute?

Auto-Extending Bidding – we’ve developed auto-extending auctions that mimic traditional auction house bidding; it’s a key feature to make sure classic vehicles achieve their true worth. Bids placed in the last one minute automatically extend the auction by two further minutes. So there is no need to leave bidding to the last second.

Security – we operate higher levels of security, so you may need to enter further authorisations against your stored card after you select ‘Place Bid’. All this takes time and may mean you miss the end of the auction by the time the authorisation passes. To guarantee your bid, we recommend at least five minutes are active on the auction when you place your bid.
